Terry,the Yamaha is a 'pre-RD' street bike? or the high-pipe scrambler ?

It’s a pre-RD Bill. Interestingly in the parts book I have it looks like there was a high pipe version but I’ve only ever seen the street version. My mate Hughie (RIP) had an R5 350 back in the early 70’s, which was the real fore runner of the RD series.

Those Yamaha's all had nice,solid frames.

Yeah it’s a nice little bike, interesting that the kickstarter is on the left side like my Suzuki’s and the chain is on the right. Luckily most of the original parts came with it, because I didn’t see much on Ebay for one.

Spotty and I got some more work done on the little Yam last night. It’s now got the engine mounted, rear fender and wheel in place (no chain adjusters yet, they were missing) and I’ve ordered a new chain (525, I have new 530’s and 520’s here but no 525’s) and the 26mm carbs that I ordered on Sunday were delivered yesterday, which is amazing.

Tonight we hope to have the front end installed so we can wheel it around while we wait for more parts like the chain and battery. I’ve had to machine up some parts for it and might have to fabricate the chain adjusters, and find something to use as an oil tank cap as the original one was missing as well as the speedo and some trim pieces.

I have to keep remembering that it’s only something that I want to sell so it shouldn’t matter that some parts are missing, but it would be nice to actually have a running, rideable bike rather than just a pile of parts hurriedly thrown together.

How much do they want for a used speedo and tach for it ?

It’s got a tach, but no speedo. Who’s “They” Bill? I haven’t seen any on Ebay and certainly don’t want to pay shipping from the US or elsewhere so I scrounged a speedo (probably Suzuki or Kawasaki) that might fit. I need to buy a battery but once again, none listed here and $100(+) for shipping from overseas. So far I have around $1800 into it which wouldn’t bother me if I was going to keep it, but I’d be very lucky to get that much back, considering that it needs a full cosmetic restoration, and all I know about the engine is that it turns over and has compression. If the speedo I found in my garage doesn’t fit I might have to look around for an old RT/DT/RD speedo as theylook similar to the tach, but only if it’s cheap, and local.

  I got a scotchbrite type ball for a drill motor so I tested it on a dyno cover that is extremely distressed. It apparently slid on a rough surface. I think it has character.  see reply #20 in the carding brush thread.

Fresh oil and filter and a tweak of carb no.1, to reduce over-rich symptoms / plug fouling. Then did 100 miles with 3 mates. The Honda acquitted itself very well. An encouraging improvement. Much less stumble taking off from a stop and much better when I whack on the throttle (just for testing purposes, of courrse!). It's still a bit rich I think, so I will try another 1/8th in on the idle circuit screw. I'm childishly excited I may have cracked it  .

Thanks go to Hondaman. Beginners mistake. I had no idea that by opening (anticlockwise) what I thought was a simple air screw, I was in fact enrichening the idle! I am hopeful I'll crack this problem now, without another carb off overhaul.
