CB in a VAN
« on: November 20, 2009, 07:13:00 PM »
I need to move my bike, can i get it in a Ford E150?

There are no hooks in the floor, can I get it on the center stand and drive slooowwwww, otherwise was thinking strap the front to the front seats....if i can get it in.

Also, any tips on rigging a ramp?

Thanks!

That is INSANELY dangerous.  Don't do it!  Find a way to strap it down well, or you'll likely regret it one way or another.

Yes a CB750 will fit into a Cargo van - I moved my CB750 from Boston to Newark in a cargo van - used an old door as a ramp and pushed it in. Used the side of the van for tie-down straps. It worked. It got the bike to Newark.

good luck

Years ago I helped a buddy move a CB350 in my '69 Ford Econoline.
We had no tie downs but we were only going a couple of miles... ::)

I told the guy to hang on the bike and hold the front brake.

He didn't..

...at the first stop light the bike come rolling forward and the front wheel wedges between my seat and the engine cover with the bike exhaust leaving a big dent in the engine cover.

We drove home that way and unloaded the bike.   :-\

Never did get that POS running.

But the bike did fit.  :)

You may want to look into renting a box van also.. They come with ramps and U-Haul has low deck hight and they are not that pricey for one day.

ps. I love mid Econolines. awesome looking cargo vans. flirted with an early 60's econo but its a wee bit tiny for hauling gear. the mid Econoline was champion but a rare beast in these parts

A 550 will fit in a chevy astro, so i'm sure it will fit in an econoline. There arn't any hooks in the floor anywhere? Run ratchet straps around the seat bases, and then some out the back doors around the bumper or something.

I moved my 75 550F from Boston to Tampa in a 75 Econoline. I took out the seats in the back and bolted the straps to the floor with the seat bolts, Worked real good. If I remember correctly I had to take the mirrors off and loosen and tilt the handle bars down.

i can fit a cb550 in my toyota previa mini-van, so a ford van shouldn't be a problem. just find something to strap it to.  use a 2x8 sheet of thick ply and some 2x4's for a ramp. get creative!

I put a CB750 K4 in a 2001 Honda Odyssey.  Mirrors were off... loosened the handle bars - rotated them rearward to get vertical clearance (watch out for brake fluid!) - re-tightened and rolled it on through the back hatch.

I used the aluminum folding ramp you can get at HF: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=90018

I was kinda giddy that it fit in there.  I used the seat mounting points for tie-down straps.  I remember being most worried about forward travel.  (blocked the wheels and used rear mounting points in the van to hold the front of the bike)

I once stuffed 4 bikes (3 350Fs and one Yamaha TX 500) in the back of a gutted high top Dodge Ram van once.  No tie downs or nothing but I did have old couch cushions and other padding stuffed between them.  I drove them all the way from Pennsylvania to Florida (in December no less).  I actually took a nap under the TX 500 and after a nighmare (or daymare in that case), woke up almost hitting my head on the oil pan.  Necessity breeds invention!

Thats a really good idea, there are usually little clips on the floor, right? Also thinking about slapping together some 2x4 chocks or something that you can wedge into the van, and then tie the bike to.

As far as ramps, if you need to just get a friend and pick it up. I've loaded a 77 550 into the back of a pickup by just picking it up and pushing it in there, and I'm no Hercules.

Once I picked up a 75 KZ440 and took off all the mirrors and plastics and rammed it into the back of a Nissan Pathfinder. It laid on its side, hung out the back, and spilled fluid all over the car all the way from Baltimore to DC. When we got there we just yanked it out and it fell on the ground. Filled it up with gas and it cranked right over, runs fine to this day.

I'm obviously much nicer to bikes now then when I was younger, but this is just an example. Remember, if the bike fits, haul it!

In case you need to move a cb550, just get a vw van...and if you need to move the van...just get a bigger van!
