Interest in a custom made 4-4 exhaust for the CB750K?
« on: November 24, 2009, 12:40:44 PM »
List of People GENUINELY interested, price point is under 600 WITH baffles:
Deceptibong
Wannabridin

A friend of mine makes custom exhaust systems for damn near anything...bikes, cars...you name it. Mandrel bent of course. I brought up the subject the other day of him making me a CR750 replica system 4-4 for my cb750 and he was very interested. The price would drop if he was making a few to make it worth making. So he'd either need a system to use to duplicate which would be the cheapest way, or my bike to make something to fit it. He would want a bike in the end to test fit regardless...but to start with an actual exhaust as a template would be best.

I was thinking something along the lines of what Lordmoonpie had for sale on ebay a short while ago...anyone have any ideas of how I could get him something to go off of, all I have laying around is a Kerker 4-1 and a MAC 4-1.

If there is interest we'd probably be looking at around 700 per exhaust with baffles(barely), mandrel bent...mild steel or stainless depends on the price of the tubing if he can fit it under that amount.

I guess i'm just looking for input on how I should go about this. Worst case i'm gonna get him a bike to use as a template and just make me one, but I figured i'd see if there would be any group type interest (more than 4 would get us a decent price). I'm not making any money on this and he'd just be barely breaking even on tubing and some money for the labor/bending dies(sp?).

i might be interested.  i recently purchased a carpy 4-1, so i guess it depends on what you think it'll look like.  if it's anything like benjie's, then i'd be a lot more interested.  i love the 4-4 look!  but if you're going to do it, and you can make it affordable, stainless all the way

Yeah i'd like to do stainless but if that just won't work pricewise I would get it black ceramic coated inside and out anyways...

It'd be like Benji's 4-4 system he has advertised for the DOHC honda on his site.

Or if Lordmoonpie doesn't mind me stealing this auction link...this is the system he sold on ebay a short while ago...

Something like that...except I'm not sure what baffles I should use if any, and obviously i'm not sure what the rules are for me linking to a pic that isn't mine...

i don't think he'd mind, but that's for him to judge...  and ya, a look like that on a street bike would be sweet!  and as for baffles, i'd say you'd need something.  there's some old timers on here who probably won't want a super loud drone all the time!  also, some states are ANAL about having a baffle for inspection.  screw the cops in certain areas, unless they carry a decibel meter, there's no way they can give you a legit ticket...

would you have any cross over tubes built in?  or would these be necessary?

Lol, well I don't have any of those bikes...but if someone local wants one made I'm sure he can. I'll see if I can get a more exact price from him. At the least I need to know what daimeter tubing will be needed for the headers? I have no idea...(for the cb750 that is)

1.25" - 1.5"

Is that the factory header size or what the CR750 style exhaust should have?

As far as crossovers and whatnot I have no idea...I wasn't going to have them but I need input from those with and without them?

If he can make a decnt copy of the stock pipes, there is money in that. I may have some old pipes from a 78K laying around. Albany is like 2-2 1/2  hrs from me.

The problem is I want these to be performance pipes...not just copies of the original 4-4 system. Although I guess starting with that and going with a slightly larger diameter with a removal baffle system might work...

If it's only 1.5" or smaller then I need to double check with him on price. It might be cheaper than him and I both thought in that case...

Colin - who said you could use my pictures?! I'm going to ring up my attorney right now!! Well I might if I had one  :D

What I might have though is some drawings of the kit pipes that may be good for your friend to work from. I will have two more sets of the CR750 works replica pipes for sale in the new year, probably more like £775 GBP but if you can make them cheaper locally then fair enough.

My papers are all in storage at the moment as we're decorating but give me a week and I'll see if I have the technical drawings of the kit pipes....and in the meantime, if anyone has the number of a good attorney LOL! ;D

Lol, well I have a number for a good attorney...but I won't give it to you!  ;D

That'd be great if I could get any info from your plans, i'm getting a complete stock 4-4 exhaust to kind of use to help with the process. Or at least to get a closer estimate on price from the exhaust builder to see if this is even viable. If not i'll be saving and buying one of your systems in the spring Lordmoonpie  ;)

You can still have a stock looking system that has a bit of grunt to it. I am told the early CB were fairly loud. You really do want loud at high spped as it really gets tiring after a while.

Mikeb4 did a good chop on a standard system to get a lightly baffled CR750 setup - might be worth goign back to what he did to see the details? Did he post in the CR750 Daytona thread, I can't remember but his bike was in the BOTY thread....

I would like to see some tail pipes to fit those head pipes, that are styled like the "conti style" pipes on a MV Agusta.

Ricky Racer...that is freaken dead sexy! I might bug you about info for those...

So for updates. Once I get this stock system to my door, i'm handing it over to my exhaust building friend and he's going to duplicate the headers in a slightly larger diameter...and I might get in touch with you Ricky Racer about maybe using those types of mufflers on the headers he makes...we'll see. Or he'll just make a high flow copy of the stock system with removable/tuneable baffles of some sort...I'll keep everyone updated on progress and costs as they change.
