I hear what Paulages is saying, but if attack incidences are increasing and it certainly seems that way, usually it means the animal population is very healthy too.

Boy, I keep getting this freightening image of older women flashing their breasts...kinda like the "Girls Gone Wild" videos, but with old sagging breasts being bared. Now they call it "Cougars Gone Wild"

There have been many cases in the last few years where mountain lions have decided to try a little "long pig" for dinner.  One of the things I noticed when moving to Idaho after living in Alaska for so many years was the woods in the lower 48 were a little boring.  In Alaska, you have to stay alert out in the boonies.  And you don't have to be that far out.  A guy was killed and partially eaten by a bear off of the Funny River horse trail a few years back, about 5 miles as the crow flies from my house.  And people get stomped by moose with regularity in AK.  Pretty dull down here by comparison.  So here's to you, all you hungry lions not impressed all that much by us, the lords of creation.  You are making the woods down here in America a little more interesting.

It would be nice if they laid off of little kids in their own yards, though.

 Some more info, the second one I mentioned, I got some info wrong. It was New Years day, in a small village west of Prince George.. Woman and her 3 kids went to the church to clean up after New Yrs eve. The smallest was inside the 5 and 7 yr olds outside. She heard a scream like the kids had never used before, and ran out only carrying a cleaning rag. She saw the cougar with its mouth on the 7 yr old sons head.. , and went after it, got face to face, smacked it, it stared at her and let go! What really freaked her oit is the 5 yr old girl was not to be seen, had ran around the church. she grabbed up her kids and had to drive 20 miles for help. They tracked the cougars, there was 2 females, they shot both, they weighed 30 and 35 kilos.

 Paul, Boston Bar has been there 100 + years, and it looked like it occured in a subdivision.. these attacks, are pretty rare, not often seen behaviour for these cats..

Is something happening to their normal food supply out in the woods that would cause them to take the extra risk of preying on humans?  I mean these cats are smart and they know that people are a dangerous source of food.

a buddy of mine lives in very rural and wild southern oregon (ok, it's no alaska...), and his backyard is literally the rogue national wilderness. anyway, he's lived out there over 5 years now, and constantly sees cat tracks, hears them shriek occasionally (sounds like a lady screaming in a B movie), there are NO deer in his gulch, but he's not seen one once. they really don't like to mess with humans normally. their M.O. however, involves quietly stalking prey, like you've seen your housecat to to a moth or something. it took a while to get used to taking a hike or a piss at dusk, knowing that you were probably being watched and followed.

We have 2 smaller cats here, Lynx and bobcat, both bigger than housecats.... maybe you have those in Europa?

Frank, at the start of my US tour last year, I stayed the first night with Peter in Tampa Bay.
He had a few domesticated cats called Maine cooncats, check out Google images for them.

Yes, its bitterly freekin' cold!  Animals turn to other sources of prey during these cold snaps.  And, since humans are the only ones stupid enough to hang out in this kind of cold...

 We are not having a really hard winter, not sure about the amount of snow there..

 There has been a few attacks here in the summer as well , one on children, one on a grown man..

 The thing with the big cats, you hardly ever see them, even if you are close to them..
