Thanks Scott.

I am going to try the 3D printing instead of milling because of the intricate detail and slight curve of the badge. I'm afraid it won't turn out as well as if it were 3D printed.

I think I am going to use a material called Alumide, which is a plastic that has aluminum powder mixed in it for added strength and durability. It will be produced by a process called selective laser sintering.

Here's a video of how the process works:

I finished more detailed specs of the badges, and sent it to my friend Wes to be converted into a 3D file for printing. Here is the revised art.

Depending on how these turn out, I actually might do some more custom badge designs. That site allows you to upload your design, and whoever wants it, can order them directly from the site. You can even choose your own materials.

Wonder what it would take to 3-D print a suitable buck to make a mold and cast these puppies in true metal.  Now that would be trick.  The curve really sets it off.  I am patiently tapping my toes waiting to see the finished product.

What kind of material would the buck need to be made out of? I don't know much about metal casting, but I think the Stainless Steel infused with bronze would work. It's heat resistant up to 1527.8°F

The Almuide material I want to use is only heat resistant up to 341.6°F, but it only costs $1.59 per cubic centimeter instead of $10 like the stainless steel. It will also hold more detail than the steel. To 3D print one badge in stainless steel might cost anywhere from $250 to $300. Maybe less if it is modeled correctly using the least amount of material possible. One badge in the plastic might be $30-$40.
I hope! I will find out once I upload the 3D file and get a quote.

What program do you use? Could a normal computer savvy person figure it out or does it take a class or 2?

It all depends on teh file format the 3-D printer needs.  If it can be done in Sketch-up or a like "simple" program, those take NO skill to operate.  Autocad and Rhino are fairly easy to manipulate in 3-d if you have any 2-d drafting experience.  It is only the high end stuff that if you are not in an "industry" that utilizes it daily, you might need some training.

Most 3D printers require STL files, which most 3D software programs use. They accept other file formats also. I don't know much about 3D rendering, but I know that if the object isn't made properly you can get into manifold errors and they won't print. If something isn't shelled right, or has one manifold error, then they can't print it.

I made this art specifications file in Illustrator, and my friend I went to art school with is rendering it in 3D for me. He probably uses Maya. I probably could have figured out how to do it myself, but he has a degree in 3D design. Why not let the pro do it? A lot of people can fumble their way through Photoshop too. But I get paid to use photoshop and illustrator because I have a degree in graphic design and I use the programs every day.

If you want to take a stab at it, google sketch up is free (I played with it for about 30 minutes one time) and you can download it on the net. If you run into problems shapeways.com has a forum and people offer a lot of help there. Kind of like this place.  ;D

I understand the idea.  most times the guys who change a bike to a cafe do it reasonably well. The ones that usally drive me nuts are the guys who want the "bobber" look so they toss the stock seat bolt on some retarded springer seat and drop the rear end with struts. Then chop the rear fender and bolt on the closest trailer light you have lying around.

Like this. sorry if this is your bike not my taste.

Oh and obviously you must paint it flat black.

and trust me us bobber guys feel the same way about every person on here building stupid cafe racers, and they all look the same too. just let people enjoy what they enjoy and ride man. no need to be rude about it.

I dont think I was being rude. It was just part of a discusion. If thats what you like then ride it i dont care. Like it says in the last line. "not my taste" Its an opinion and by most standards not a very offensive on.

Hmmmm, how hard would it be to make a side cover badge in K2 style that said  " 1000 Four "   instead of 750 four....using the same font type..?

Got a photo for reference? Probably not too hard. The only thing is that the badge would come in solid color, and would need to be painted.

Yeah it's possible. I'd have to draw it to scale, and see if my friend is willing to help me convert more art to 3d. Do you happen to know the dimensions of the original badge?

Here is the 3D rendering of my custom tank badges. I thought it came out bad ass. It's going to be revised slightly so that the text isn't as tall as the wing logo. I can't wait to get this printed. Also, the posts on the back have been removed, and it is recessed 2mm. This way we can use this design for other tanks in the future with 3M emblem tape.

Have you priced your piece yet? Is the pricing reasonable?

They will be painted, but I'm not sure of what color I want to do yet. I think I'm going to comp up a few different options and see how they look. The tank, side covers and rear fender will match ducati's "titanium", the frame is going to be red metal flake, and everything else is black and chrome.
