Daytona 1970 DVD & others - free! Sort of...
« on: January 23, 2010, 08:06:35 AM »
With a bit of time on my hands recuperating I thought I'd do a good deed! So, I've managed to source a DVD copy of some old video tapes that cover:

1. Honda America film of the 1970 Daytona 200 with the Dick Mann win
2. Honda Factory tour from 1966 with lots of pictures of the build process and twangy strange music!
3. A speeded up short of a "commuter" riding to work in San Francisco mid 1980s
4. Film of the California "Sunday Morning Ride" 1985/86

The first two items have suffered with age, they are lacking in blue tones on the film giving an overall orangey/red tint to the film and it's a little wobbly in places, BUT, ifyou haven't seen Dick Mann's victory like I hadn't, it's a good piece of nostalgia. I can't actually believe the way he streaks off from the line leaving the whole field for dead. It's also got some useful shots for CR750 builders to use as references and includes footage of Ralph Bryans and Tommy Robb too. The final Sunday Morning Ride film is a fantastic bit of period footage. It's quite long and has interviews with the likes of Wade Boyd's father - something you'll watch again and again.

So, the plan is this. The DVD is free and with free postage to wherever in the world. All I ask in return is that you send me a £7.50 GBP donation for the Rob Vine Fund in the Isle of Man. The Rob Vine Fund was set up when Rob lost his life racing over there and is a cause I support whenever I can. I had my hair cut off for the same charity and raised them £2000 in the process so you can see it means a lot to me  ;D

If you want to check out the charity itself, you can have a look at what they do for our sport at : http://www.mms.org.im/robvinefund

If you'd like a DVD sending (I think they will end up being region 1 only so check your DVD player is multi-region if you don't live in the USA), simply send a donation of £7.50 to my paypal account using email address simon.tappin@moonpie.co.uk

Get your mates to do the same, keep your copy to yourself, it's for a charity that supports the last great road races left on earth so be generous, buy one for your Mum as a present! It's cheap for the amount of footage you get, go on, get sending that order in, now  ;)

Thanks for your donation Brent - another classic wobbly dvd on its way to you. I spent a pleasant morning watching this, it was really entertaining to see some Stateside action after weeks of watching my old home TT videos!

Thanks Sam - all current orders are in the post. Be interested in what you guys think of the films when you get the DVD. The Honda factory tour is great if you turn the sound down, they seem to have used some strange japanese 70's Mishima inspired weirdo composer imho  ;D

Simon,
I am in the "throws" of getting a Super 8 tape converted to DVD with a business in Melbourne who specialise in this stuff.
http://avidtech.com.au/
This real of footage is about a guy who rode a 750 Honda around Australia for a 20 Grand bet back in the 70's.
(By the way, I've just had it sent from London.  ;))
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=64624.0
It's only a short (approx) 10 minute doco and I think that it will be worth each second.

Is it worth considering getting the the VHS tapes done this way or maybe the DVD's reworked if that is a possibility?
I'm not up to speed on all of this stuff about what can and can't be done and how.
These people have told me that it will be about $180:00AUD to get this reel of Super 8 onto disc or converted into a digital file format on a USB stick.
If it is a consideration to get it done this way, I would be more than happy to contribute to the cost of this.
My thinking is that this old footage is irreplaceable and is certainly worth having something like this done.

I have lots of footage from when my mate and myself were racing in the 60s. He had it all on cine film.
Some years ago he transfered it onto VHS video and its all on DVD now, did it all himself for nowt.

Mine arrived too Simon, thanks for your effort.

It's now a little later and I just finished watching. It's been a loooong time since I've seen that Daytona footage, great stuff.

Plus it's far better than anything else on the tube.  ;)

Hi Sam
I've got one of little magic boxes too for plugging the VHS into and then converting to DVD and some of it has come out good although if the tape is a bit dodgy, it's a what you see is what you get situation.
This crowd have got the gear for bringing some of that old blurry/lost colour footage back to life that deteriorates over time.
I'll give it a go mate.

Mick, not sure about super 8 transfers but that film of yours sure sounds like fun. The Daytona videos were professionally transferred in the USA so they've done the best they can with the source they had. It's not terrible but obviously suffrered a bit with age. It didn't detract from the watching experience for me as I've never ever seen the race before and the other films are good quality. Are you going to offer up your film to us guys when transferred?

Sure will Simon.
The plan is to somehow get it onto this site so that all of the members here can gain access to it.
What I would like to happen would be if the members could make a small donation towards supporting this site and then gain access that way.
Glen is the man who would have the skills to do this I think.
It's just an idea which I believe would be beneficial for everyone in a small way.
