Fellow CB'ers ,

I was thinking the other day about what kind / style / brand seat I wanna go with.
As most of you know, I have the butt-ugliest   seat currently on my CB, that is much in need of replacement.

I was planning on going with a "cafe" style seatpan, but my bike is turning more and more into a Bobber, and that
seat doesn't go with the feel of the bike. With the HD front end, and the other "bobber" touches, a cafe seat just isnt
gonna flow with the bike....

I was thinking of running a solo-type seat on the bike, such as one off a HD Sportster or the like. Anyone running
something similar on their stock framed CB ? I know I would have to fab-up a cover for the battery , but that doesnt
seem too hard. Figure I could jsut make something work with the stock hindges, and bolt the seat to the plate  ;D

As usuall , all help/pictures/advice/etc is appreciated...........

thanks for the new topic - good idea.

i have been having the same ideas myself - cafe, blah blah blah...but the seat thing is bothering me, just like you.

one of our members is in fact a 750 chopper/bobber/whatever (what is the distinction actually?) - and he happens to live here, in StL...

it's STLrocker...

I know allot of people with CB Choppers are running solo type seats , but 98% of them are
not running the stock Honda frames. I am looking for someone, or even a pic of a solo
seat on a STOCK frame.

I was planning to run a solo seat , while keeping the rear fender off the bike completely.
It is hard for me to visualize at the momment , as my CB is about 20min away in storage.

If I could get a solo seat to work , and look good , I was planning on hacking off the "extra"
rails that usually sit under the stock seat. Would make the bike alot "tighter" looking...

I was wondering some years ago how would my Suzuki GZ250 look without the passenger seat. I searches for a picture on the internet, and as I didn't find it, I just got a picture and roughly "photoshoped" it. It was enough to decide I liked the looks.

ProTeal,
I was thinking of running a solo seat my self on 550 hardtail.
I was wondering about how it would look or attach in the front. Front half of frame is stock.
As to attching to a stock frame check out:

I know it is a cx500 but it may give you some ideas.

I have had thoughts of a older style Sportster seat or British style solo seat w/that little "pillion" seat on the rear fender. But I've never followed through with it. Just a thought though. I have never had one in hand to see what it would take to mount it. My idea would be something like on the Matchless in my avtar (is it big enough for you to see?) Gotta go for now,  Bill

BILL440CARS---> Can't see what you are speaking of....

HONDACHOPPROJECT----->Most of the solo "aftermarket" seats have mounting kits with them. Or, you could
mout it similar to the old Harleys , that flip in the front, with some sort of removial of a pin or something..

CBJ------------------------------------>That pic of your bike is BADASS....My thoughts are the same as yours. I love the look of my bike with the seat off. Looks so much cleaner, retro, and so on. I would love to get this idea to work. I believe if a metal "base" was fabbed up, to work with the stock hindges and seat mech, this would give a solid platform to mount the new solo seat too. As far as the rear fender goes, I would ditch the stock unit ( as i allready have) and see how it looked from their. Maybe create a new inner fender, to keep the sludge off your back ? Those "extra" bits and pieces of frame you speak of are just a sawzall cut away from being gone. It would solve the issue of the extra pieces hanging past the new solo seat...Thats the nice thing about metal, it can always be welded back on if needed....

Cycle X sells a general purpose solo seat. Would just need mounting kit/hardware...
http://www.cyclexchange.net/Seat%20Page.htm

Doesn't user CD811 run a solo seat on his bike ???

Pic below is a solo seat said to be from the rice paddy. Not the best
looking bike (in my opinion) , but the seat is right on. Ditch the rear fender, cut off the
extra , and BLAM !

STLrocker has a chopper - i'm trying to get in touch with him - he's a lurker here, but he has put a lot of work into his bike and it looks really sweet...

we rode around together with the local bike thugs last summer and as i recall he's turned his into a hardtail...regardless, if i see him this weekend i'll see if he'll post some pix.

as to cutting off parts of the frame...well, i am a little nervous about cutting off the bits that the shock mounts are welded to...there is a structural piece at the top mount that is basically an integral brace where two of the frame tubes come together - not to sure about wizzing that off with the ole sawzall... ;)

i would feel better about it if some "been there done that" would weigh in...anyone?

You could easily replace/add some bracing with some steel stock & a welder.
Not trying to re-invent the wheel here , just get a #$%*in backend that isnt
as common as the cafe style seatpans...

yeah, i completely agree - i have a molded fiberglass seat in mind that really hugs the frame - i'm hoping to use my stock taillight - it's one of the unique things about this year bike - it's has the small reflector and lense with the little titty on it instead of the larger flat lense...

i think a rear fender is pretty much necessary unless you live in a completely arid region - i know it rains enough here that i will want to have at least a little stubby back there to keep the "skunking" factor at bay...   ;D

Not sure if this is the style your looking for, but check out the pictures of my son's cb650 at http://www.geocities.com/dangabor/   The frame is stock, except we cut off rear seat support.  The seat is off of a 1500 Yamaha. Not sure what year.   Paul        PS - picture also in my avatar, but kind of small

when you cut off that lateral brace, the one that bridges across the tailpiece, did you re-work the lateral bracing? i think that thing does more than just hold up the seat...?

As you can see from the pictures,we put a pretty wide fender on the back. When we cut off the brace we had to narrow the fender and it still wouldn't fit,so i got a porta power to spread the rear of the frame. It took a lot of force. My point is this- the frame doesn't seem any weaker without the brace.   Paul

I bought one for my 500 project(avatar), I mocked it up a bunch of ways, and due to the high "boxy-ness"  of the frame, it just looked "un-natural?" ,forced or " perched".    I have seen it look good, but only on a modified or rigid aftermarket frame.

I haven't gone so far as to buy a seat (except a nice stock model as back-up) but i've tried a little fiberglass based seat off of a Suzi dirt bike, just to mock up the look, and it gave me the idea of a minimal fiberglass base that just smooths out the frame's angles...i'm obviously not explaining this too well, but i have it all up here in the noggin...

seeing as it snowed yesterday, i hope i have enough time to teach myself how to do fiberglass molding before riding weather sets in!  ;D
