Topic: cb 400 4 engine video

   I managed to get my 400 4 running after cleaning out the carbs and replacing the battery. It took ages to start as it has not been running for years. Now it starts very easily. I whonder if any knowledgeable 400/4 masters would like to have a listen for any tell tale signs of nackeredness. It sounds a bit tinny there like maybe some adjustments need to be made.

It has the common loose cam chain sound.  Be careful adjusting it.  The book I used 30 years ago (Clymer) did not properly describe how to adjust it and I broke off a bolt in the crankcase.  Tried to remove the bolt with an easy out and it broke.  So I disassembled the motor and took it to a machine shop to get it removed.  All that because of a noisy cam chain.


I'm sure there's a thread somewhere on this site with instructions for adjusting the 400F cam chain.

Yea I'll look a tthe instructions on that. I was glad to finally get it to run. It took a long time of trying to start and then starting a
bit and spluttering.
Now its fine.

Just an observation...did you replace the #3 pipe?   It's not near as 'broken in' as the others.   Do all the pipes heat equally?   I only ask because I had a cylinder that would only fire at higher RPMs, therefore the other pipes got hot quicker, and oxidized more.

good point, no I haven't replaced it. This is how the bike was purchased. It is quite rusty round the back. I dare not remove them
for fear of snapping off the rusty old studs.
I am trying to get the thing roadworthy asap see, then to gradually take care of things as I go.
Ill have a look at that when I get back there to it

Sync the carbs, adjust the valves set the timing adjust the timing chain. It will smooth out and start to sound like a little gas powered sewing machine! You might want to go through the jets again it still sounds a little "clogged".

hey nice rysty 400..mine are alså old and rusty..i have veldet the exhost,,så it can be used some time..

Thanks I may do all that when I get the chance, The carbs had a big massive clean and blow out. I had to make up the o rings for the jets by dremmeling down some generic o rings but they worked for this startup.

Do you mean the spluttery bit on the engine close up? or the riding section?

Lol,... I did the same dam thing. I hate the design of those tensioners. I found a work around it by shimming the slipper. I cut pieces of an old feeler guage and placed them inside the damper holder. It works pretty darn good except I have to remove the valve cover anytime I need to readjust. Also did I see an exhaust leak or was that the crankcase vent hose blowing out some smoke?

I'd make sure to get the valves and timing spot on before sync'ing the carbs or playing with the cam chain. The sync is usually the icing on the cake. Might I suggest a carbtune if you don't have one. Best money I ever spent on a bike.

Yea there is a gaping hole in the exhaust junction box.
When I had the carbs off i noticed that they were well syncronised (in that the slides were going up and down at the same level)
Also I saw some un damaged paint blobs along the nuts on the slide raising lever bar bit.
I did notice that the chokes were uneven on there off position.

Am I giong to open a can of nightmare worms if I start messing with the carb sync? Or is it quite straightforward when one follows the haynes manual?

i vill do synkro at the last thing,,vhen exhost ,,airfilter,ignision,valve adjusting,,,choker ,,all other are ok..its last thing to do..
mine 400 are in 1000 pises nov,,be care not to do everything at same time..you kome not to drive this summer then..
start vith brakes elektric exhost,,and vait vith the rest,,
