Topic: license plates?

I've noticed this quite often on this forum. When taking pictures of there bikes alot of people make sure to black out or cover up there license plate #. WHY? Whats the harm in seeing your tag#. I mean we ride on public hwys. every day where thousand's of people see our tags anyway. I guess if someone wanted to go to the trouble they could fined out who you are and where you live by your #, but still what is the harm. I'm I missing something here? I just don't see the logic behind this.

I've seen it other forums too. I think it's a security thing. A thief could find out your address from the plate # and come steal your ride.

I understand the security thing, and it pays to use caution in today's world. But you and your bike could be minding your on business sitting at a stop light when some low life stops behind you and likes your classic bike and thinks it would look better in his garage than yours so he writes down the tag# and gets info on you that way. You can't ride around with your plate covered so weather a thief gets a tag# that way or from a picture off a forum, really whats the difference. If  a crook wants your bike bad enough there going to get it no matter what you do. See my point.

My bike never minds her own business - she is a mouthy girl that gets me in trouble with all kinds of hooligans  
 As for the blurred tags, I guess it is just better to be safe than sorry?

I guess people rightly feel that there is only a certain amount of information they will put on the internet. I have no control who see my plate number out on the road. The www is a much bigger place.

         That "Ounce of Prevention" by blocking out the plate while online, just might be what keeps someone from doing just that.

some didn't sign the waivers, some are brands that the network or show does not support (or more likely doesnt support them)
like when they show a video of a gang and only 2 or 3 are burred out....those were the ones not found guilty and didnt sign the i dont give a damn waiver

Ditto.... if you think you have the stones to get past the neighbor's dog... my building manager... all 4 of my security chains... disc lock... and my camera...

You deserve to have it for a little while until the lo-jack kicks on.

Reporting them for what?

Perhaps repos or something.  It was on either the news or the internet somewhere about 2 weeks ago.  But supposedly you just collect license plate numbers and get money for it...

I agree with dhall57.  No difference in my mind to seeing me drive down the road and reading my number or seeing it on the internet.  True, they could track me down and come get the bike but I'll bet more people who are close enough to think about it are seeing it person rather than the internet.

I have friends who have car dealerships in Queens NY. They would get past all of that if they really wanted the bike. This is what they do. For punk kids that is great security.

That's another reason I don't worry about it.  If they see the number or not, if they want it, they'll get it.  That's why I have insurance.

Well no security system is fullproof... but that's why I have the lo-jack.

I used to work for one of the original installers in the area and I got him the contracts with all of our local dealerships. So I get it on all my stuff for free.

But yes... I will try to make it as hard as possible.

I had a 6 month old TransAm stolen out of a secured Parking Garage. They crashed the roll down steel door with a Cadillac gate and drove out 10 new exotic cars. After that whatever comes in the car is what I use. Oh yeah, the Garage belonged to Brinks and they stored the Armored Trucks there. If they want it they take it.

Lots of theifs keep their nose clean, in their own towns..

 Stolen bikes go out of town, get parted out. not much parts values in stockers, more in hipo goodies.. carbs wheels, headers, blowers, turbos, big swingarm kits..  easy stuff to sell.. buyers always waiting that dont care where its from..

 Easy to find people showing off bikes that have that stuff, online...

 Harder to find bikes with that stuff.. just driving around...
