As a side note; does anyone else get the impression this guy was just messing with you.  When you appeared at the door all he had to do was pull the clutch, click into first and go.  That would have taken under a second.  Then he just walked away.  Why didn't he run?  It almost sounds like someone who gets off on confrontation.

This dude is one seriously twisted mofo if this is the case, or suicidal tendencies. Or a seriously stupid dumbass.
Maybe it is just the way I think but death is something on my mind that would keep me from stealing someone else's bike.
You have no idea what might be waiting on the other end of that door if it opens up while you are starting that bike.

The guy could have an aluminum bat (PING!), knife, gun, bolo's, numbchucks, shotgun, taser, or fists of fury that beat the spark of life out of you.
Point is as the thief you have no goddamn clue what is on the other side of that door waiting for you should you decide to get rabbit with someone else's property.

Some people just don't give a ____. What makes a person murder someone? Beat them? Steal from them? Join a gang so they can do all the above in as a group activity? There are plenty of twisted individuals to go around.

Wise words greasyj, you could have destroyed your good karma, your clean record and your finances in a second if you had reacted violently... that's just how it is, no matter who is right or wrong.... the journey to Court is a long and expensive one and cost would be much more than your bike is worth, I'm sure.

"Good schools everywhere, not just in good neighborhoods."

The problem with that theory is, a school is only as "good" as it's students. No matter how much money you spend on a school in the ghetto, the #$%*ers are going to tear it up. Inner-city schools get MUCH more money per student than small-town high schools and yet the small schools have a MUCH better success rate.

Want to hear something really messed up. We have some really cheapo busted up chairs sitting outside by our garage door. We have people who walk their dogs or walk to the welding school close by and sometimes they sit and read books out on our chairs. This is great and I've met a lot of great people that I found just sitting on our chairs. We have no problem with it and actually encourage it.

So a few weeks ago we get a broken up piece of ply wood and screw some legs on it and now have a table out there. My live in girlfriend went to the farmers market and bought a couple of boxes of flowers and planted them in cheap-o $0.10 pots and we put them out there....

I go to bed a few days later and when I wake up the flowers and the homemade table are gone! ???
Seriously, why would a hobo steal flowers and a homemade table. We have an old lazyboy out there!
Its hard to be wrong when you know nothing!

The problem with that theory is, a school is only as "good" as it's students. No matter how much money you spend on a school in the ghetto, the #$%*ers are going to tear it up. Inner-city schools get MUCH more money per student than small-town high schools and yet the small schools have a MUCH better success rate.

you can make statistics say anything you want if you put the right spin on the results. I'm sure there is more to the story.

I think it's pretty obvious that it's not that simple. there are many factors, like having parents that encourage you, not beat you. it's a problem with many causes and no one solution. but I think it's also obvious that all things are FAR from equal and if you haven't walked in another's shoes it's hard to understand what you would do in his situation. anyone can become a monster or an angel for the most part. but if they are raised in a ghetto it's much more likely they will become a monster.

I grew up in a #$%*ty area, cinder block homes, camaros on lawns, the white ghetto. no supervision, no dad, no encouragement whatsoever to do anything other than whatever I felt. I still did good in school, got the highest SAT in my class, but at the same time was also runnin scams and stealin #$%* so I could have school clothes and blow off steam. I ended up getting in lots of trouble. goin to jail. I have a felony, strike, etc. so I can't have a gun unless I want to risk a mandatory minimum stretch. got my rights restored, though. I vote and all that.

now I have my own biz and am mostly a decent citizen, but I am a special case. I have friends who didn't do so well. some died. both my cousins went to prison for longer stretches and came out animals. they are both hopelessly pig headed now.

my point is most people do not overcome their situation, it is not the norm but the exception when people do. they are usually whatever their suroundings make of them. wether you like it or not, that's the way the world is and we can make it worse or better. I feel like the prison system, ghettos, bad schools, etc. make it worse.

Actually that is not true. The inner city schools spend much less per student than the suburbs. Be that as they may, our Plant is in the worst part of the entire County. A few blocks away is a Charter School, all minorities, the area is surrounded by drug dealers and gangs. They have just won an award for having among the top reading scores in the State. The building is clean, the kids are clean. The difference is the Teachers care, which makes the kids care. These kids will break the welfare cycle.

My fathers a lawyer and hes told me about a case he studied in law school. A guy wired shotgun to a spring mechanism attached to his door because his house kept getting broken into while he was away. One day a would be thief broke in and the booby trap killed him. The home owner was found guilty of something (not for sure what). Cant remember if it was as harsh as murder.

Four years after the case was decided, Briney was asked if he would change anything about the situation. Briney replied: "There's one thing I'd do different, though, I'd have aimed that gun a few feet higher."

You remind me of a very close friend of mine. He was lucky that through political connections he plead down and was ordered to leave the State.
While he totally rebuilt his life and became well known and very respected in the Community, his record haunts him. He was begged to run for Town office, but he was afraid that somehow they would dig it up. I would say other than Child molesters who seem to never change, anyone who has kept their nose clean for 10 years, should get a complete pardon, clean slate and all records wiped. Are you sure its the teachers and not the fact that Charter schools pick their students?  How many kids at that charter school have an IEP?  You don't have to answer, I already know it's none.  Charter schools are great at providing serivces to kids in the inner city that meet specific educational requirements.  Unfortunately the public schools cannot pick our students.  Trust me when I tell you that inner city teachers care about their students just as much as teachers in charter or magnet schools.

thanks for the vote of confidence guys. usually I don't tell people about my past because of judgements and whatnot, especially if it's a customer. but it's good to know guys like you are out there who understand that some people do change. wouldn't mind having that last right restored. just in case.

I'm so square these days that I smile and wave at local cops. I don't drink beer anymore even.

my mom is always tryin to get me to be a big brother, or talk at schools about my experiences. she had to visit me in jail and the hospital, etc. she was really young when she had me, and we've both changed a lot.

I think when I finish my bike project I might try to make time to help out somehow. there are a lot of wayward youth here in the bay area.

and I agree about chimos and rapos. that's pretty much unforgivable in my book.

I am aware of Charter Schools as I served three terms as a Trustee two of them as VP of a suburban school district. I have no illusions about public education and the people in charge of it. These Charters are not private, they are public and they take all students up to their enrollment capacity. These Charters don't get mired in the "traditional" model, they are usually run by people who realize how incompetent our public schools have become.
