"Good schools everywhere, not just in good neighborhoods."
The problem with that theory is, a school is only as "good" as it's students. No matter how much money you spend on a school in the ghetto, the #$%*ers are going to tear it up. Inner-city schools get MUCH more money per student than small-town high schools and yet the small schools have a MUCH better success rate.
you can make statistics say anything you want if you put the right spin on the results. I'm sure there is more to the story.
I think it's pretty obvious that it's not that simple. there are many factors, like having parents that encourage you, not beat you. it's a problem with many causes and no one solution. but I think it's also obvious that all things are FAR from equal and if you haven't walked in another's shoes it's hard to understand what you would do in his situation. anyone can become a monster or an angel for the most part. but if they are raised in a ghetto it's much more likely they will become a monster.
I grew up in a #$%*ty area, cinder block homes, camaros on lawns, the white ghetto. no supervision, no dad, no encouragement whatsoever to do anything other than whatever I felt. I still did good in school, got the highest SAT in my class, but at the same time was also runnin scams and stealin #$%* so I could have school clothes and blow off steam. I ended up getting in lots of trouble. goin to jail. I have a felony, strike, etc. so I can't have a gun unless I want to risk a mandatory minimum stretch. got my rights restored, though. I vote and all that.
now I have my own biz and am mostly a decent citizen, but I am a special case. I have friends who didn't do so well. some died. both my cousins went to prison for longer stretches and came out animals. they are both hopelessly pig headed now.
my point is most people do not overcome their situation, it is not the norm but the exception when people do. they are usually whatever their suroundings make of them. wether you like it or not, that's the way the world is and we can make it worse or better. I feel like the prison system, ghettos, bad schools, etc. make it worse.
