Im seriously considering infidelity
« on: July 12, 2010, 12:13:06 AM »
Not that kind of cheating ya wankers, I mean to my K1 CB750. I have been secretly lusting after a 75-77 GL1000 Nekked Wing. Any of you hooligans out there have a side by side riders comparison? My main reason is that im a big 'ol 6'3 230 dude and I want more beef. Dont get me wrong, I see the greatness in my K1, Im just thinking 2 up and long rides might be more fun on the GL. My instinct are telling me to keep my low mile K1 as its a goldmine for appreciation in comparison. Any thoughts?

Oh man!  A '75 or '76 GL1000 is next on my list.  I've been putting it off way too long.  I can't give you a comparison to my K1 because I've only ridden a GL once, and that was several years ago.

If you're considering selling the K1 to get the GL, DON'T DO IT!  Keep the K1 AND get the GL. :)

A lot of people out there have Goldwings but most of them don't know what a naked 'Wing even looks like.  I personally liked my '76 GL1000 (before the transmission kicked the bucket).  I would ride it over my '81 XS850 triple any day of the week.  It was more comfortable, smoother and surprisingly enough more nimble.  And it has some REAL get up and go in it!  0-60 in about 4 seconds with the carbs tuned right, and it pulled right up to about 115-120 before I got scared and backed it off.  It still obviously had more pull left in it, but the tires I was running on it were about 10 years old, so 'nuff said  ;)

I could also pull low-speed clutch wheelies no problem (maybe why my transmission went out? ;D)

Maintenance can be a pain though...  Like I said, transmission went out on mine and to do any kind of overhaul maintenance you HAVE to split the case.  Not much fun.  And mine had an unresolved bog off of idle that was a bit of an annoyance.

You'll certainly get more looks and conversations with the CB.  But if you're looking for comfort and fit, the GL will suit your needs nicely.

One of the things I think most folks miss is how the bike looks with "you" as the rider.... a bigger guy would look good on a Winger.... my pal who's a Jockey.... well.. not so much  , besides he rides Big BMW's .... and looks totally wrong on them

Do it. If one wench can't fulfill your needs.....

Oh, we're talkin' bikes!  Sorry. ;D ;D

So why is it whenever we talk Wings, people confuse them with rolling couches?  The first model (GL1000-'75 to '79) never came with a fairing or bags.  These were Hondaline accessory items, dealer installed at best.  All of years of the 1100, a nekkid version was available.  They finally stopped in '84, and too soon for my liking.  I'm with Gordon.  "75 or '76.  I can't speak for him, but I want one of those because I like having a kick starter, such that it is.  And a pancake engine design makes it easy to convert to a single carb.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

i want an old GL1000 or 1100 really bad!  i have a lead on an 1100, but it's a mid 80's, but still awesome for cruising!

here are three of the really "famous" naked GL's out there, one of which is Randakk's supercharged, dual weber carb'd machines!!!

Yep, the 77 Im looking at has a single Holley, although I hear that never runs quite right. Im thinking the "look" is important, thats the reason I sold my CB500, I looked like a dude on his 50HP pitbike when I was rollin. I will say, I think the idea of adding to the stable is better than selling. That damn K1 is just too sweet to sell, runs great, pulls hard, and at 8800 miles, im still good for many years of trouble free riding.

At Barber last year a guy was giving one away..... Seriously...these things are DIRT cheap.... ( early versions )
bout like my 550's....  never paid over 500 for one and I've acquired them in the last 4 yrs...

I'm betting with a grand you could come up with several of them.... and make up a decent little winger to play on...

Yeah KeithTurk, thats true. and if you look at Randakk's website, he thinks they are the next big collector. Maybe a fun little side note to the K1.

I go along with Gordon. DON'T SELL YOUR K1!!!! The GL is better suited for 2 up riding and would be more comfortable on longer trips because that's how Honda designed it, but try other means for getting one instead of selling the K1.

At Road america there was a guy damn near giving one away too. He kept telling me to buy it and just strap the 350F to the back for the ride home. Had i been there in my truck, it would have went home with me.

It was flat black, with what looked like an acerbis dirtbike headlight on it. So good looking.

My brother and I bought these two as a set. They both ride like new, the 750F is great for around town riding, and short trips. I like the wing a little better for two up riding and longer rides. We used to vacation on a 750 but we are bigger and older now and appreciate the extra room and cushy seat on the wing.

Not to thread hijack, but did you do the dual front disc? I have been thinking about doing that to mine, and was wondering if i needed a bigger master.

Also, one of the guys form Half Fast Chicago, JRK5892 he posts there and here, has picked one up and is doing a cafe style. He does some AWESOME powder coat work, and the bike is starting to look very cool.

Here is the build thread http://www.halffastchicago.com/forum/index.php?topic=1577.0

If i ever need powder coat work done, I would, without a doubt go to him.

Yes, I already had a wrecked F so I drilled the rotors and added the extra caliper. I cut up two of the little rotor fenders and made one that fit the right. I do not have the plumbing hooked up yes so I can't comment on how it works. The F calipers do have a larger piston than a K, I'm not sure about pressures etc. Many say it isn't worth the extra weight but it looks too cool to not do it. I did keep all the stock parts in a box for restoration use.

What are all you guys talking about GL's being dirt cheap?  I haven't been able to find a PARTS bike for less than $300 in the last 4 months of looking for a new swappable engine!  The majority of the GL's that I see on Craigslist are going for $1200-$2500.

I wish I had that much money  ;D

I agree, it looks cool, and I think I might like the extra stopping power, seeing as the rear disc is sufficiently underpowered. I need to find a front piston for my caliper before I do anything though, and finding a font F caliper is turning out to be more difficult then I thought.

Is the early F caliper not the same as 77/78K ?

I hate the Wings with fairings, and only like kicker bikes, so the early Wing is a cool bike. A bit big though... but not as huge as the LandBarges that they soon became..

The front piston is the same, but I believe that the caliper itself is different. I could be wrong, but I dont know.
