Forum Usernames - why?
« on: February 17, 2006, 12:13:45 AM »
I'm interested in some of the unusual usernames on here - care to explain yours?

Mine is quite simple - I used to hang out on www.hoc.org.uk (and still do) but their board is text only so needed a name that identified my bike (hence CB500F).  SteveD = Steve Dennis - too much to write each time...

Beside Motorcycling, I'm heavily into Flight Simulation and control the Floatplane/Amphibian section of a very large Virtual Airline (I know - Sad, or what?!) - the section is known as "the Seabirds", so my callsign is "Seabird#1"

I don't need the "#1" part here on SOHC4, so Seabird is how it came about.

In 1970 I took a 440 6 pack engine from a wrecked 1969 Dodge Super Bee and put it in a 1968 Road Runner. Dodge called their engines 6 packs, while Plymouth called theirs 6 barrel. Never mind a 440 6 barrel wasn't available in a road runner until mid 1969. I used to say my car had a 440 6 pack in it. When the upper crust would try to correct my terminology in that it should be a 6 barrel, I would explain its heritage and how it was indeed a 6 pack engine. Just all for the PO factor.

My name is William J. Van Pelt, too much time to say, so Bill came from that. I'm a MOPAR fanatic
from way back, so 440 came out of that (even though I've had Chargers, Road Runners and a 74'
Royal Monaco Arkansas State Police car) And I've always been into cars and motorcycles for as far back
as I can remember. I'll be 59 next month, so that covers a pretty good amount of time. And so I just
settled on bill440cars and even though I've thought of changing it, don't guess I will.

The Groovie Ghoulies are one of my favorite bands.  Combine that with the fact that I really am pretty Groovie and I dig the film "The Ghoulies", and there you go.

I was named by a good friend who works at the local Honda dealership after going through their out-of-date and obsolete parts room. I came up with a bunch of treasures for my parts collection! The dictionary defines a magpie as a person who collect trivial objects. Thats a bit insulting but it was a friend so I've redefined it as a person who collects trivial SHINY objects and feel much better. My nest/workshop looks great to me! ;D

I needed a "handle" when I logged into a site for Suzuki Volusias. One of my bikes is a 2005 boulevard c50, and it's too hard to come up with a different name for each board.

surly

adj : inclined to anger or bad feelings with overtones of menace; "a surly waiter"; "an ugly frame of mind"

It's either quite accurate or self depricating humor, depending on when you catch me.  ;D

I'm rather surprised you have to ask...

TwoTired

Well there are these two big round rubber thingies on most motorcycles, called tires, in the states.
(I understand Brits spell them tyres, but they have mistaken the letter y as a proper vowel to confuse their "lessers".   In fact, most of us just think they're weird and mildly amusing.  ;)  ;D )

But, anyway, the moniker is a double entendre, you see, as I'm also hyperactive!   ::) ;D ;D

I used to run on cb too. Never drove truck but I was part of about 200 or so cb'ers. We all worked on our own vehicles. We did not rely on our cell phones and such. We could squeeze miles out a standard power but sideband was much more fun! I could get almost 20 miles on 4 watts WITHOUT shooting skip. Hell on a good skip could get us to oklahoma!

To the first question, even when Raul is written very similar to Paul, the pronunciation is different. Say "Ra" as in "Random" and "ul" as in "cool", that is, "Raool" (Hey, that sounds good, "Raul is cool")

Regarding your name, "Jefe" in spanish means "boss", but it also means "chief". It's true that if I pronounce "Heffay" in english it sounds just like "Jefe" in spanish, but I don't think there is a direct translation of Geoff into spanish, or at least not one I can recall.

By the way, there is some "Jorge" here (George in english) but I can remember the nick.
