SPIDERS!!!
« on: September 15, 2010, 12:13:27 PM »
anyone notice more spiders indoors than usual?  I am.
more in the past week than i see in most years.
wifey is freakin' thinking they're all brown recluse.  might be, but i've never seen one.
even more so since finding some near the baby girls.
i gotta do something.  when she's freakin...i get an earful  ::)
no trash, woodpiles, etc next to out house for them to creep in from.

suggestions?

is it a sign a colder than normal winter is looming?

Seems the same here too. Indoor spraying inconvenient due to allergies and dogs.

I've sprayed with a 2 gallon pump sprayer, the foundation, windows, eaves, and doorways, up and out 3 ft. Commercial brand spray from Lowes. Sooner or later the spider will cross the spray. Do it every two weeks until they are dead.  If you've got plants close to the house, trim them back or better, remove them and spray, spray, spray.

Spray like I mentioned, late evening when everyone is indoors. It takes 2 to 4 hours for the spray to dry to where the dogs and kids won't track it in. Trace amounts but still.

And the 2nd and third repeats are the real killers. That should do it.

Get all the ingress/egress points. Faucets, dryer duct, AC pipes, etc.

Brown recluse live in the southern mid-west. The ones to look out for in the northwest are the Hobo spiders, their bites are less severe than the brown recluse. You could try setting out some glue boards.

Some parts of my house are virtual spider killing grounds. Seriously, they look like little spider eco labs. Various insects & insect parts scattered about and dangling from webs, along with what looks like dried spider venom forming little white crustaceans on the floor under the webs... :o :o

Two weeks ago I was sitting here in my library and a bat flew into the room!! I ran to the front door to let him out, but he didn't want to leave...so, I waited for him to land, which he finally did by hanging upside down from the crown molding in my living room, so then I grabbed my wet/dry vac.

Thinking I'd suction him on to the end of the hose and then run outside, turn off the power, thereby setting him free...didn't work. :-\  He got sucked all the way through the hose and expired inside the vac as it sat outside on my front porch overnight.  Boohoo, I'm not sad...little rats with wings!! >:( >:(

This pretty much sums up how I feel about bats!! :D :D

Oh! the hazards of living in a 100 year old house!

got a few of those in my garage.  they're gone this weekend.!

thanksfully the bats we do have, and typically only durring the hot summer, seem to take care of most of the bugs on our property.

maybe they make good housepets....to take care of the spiders.  :P

Oh man!! Speaking of dragonflies, I looked out into my backyard yesterday and must of had 50! of them flying in circles.  I live nowhere close to water and have never seen such a large concentration of them before. I thought maybe the Apocalypse was upon us! :o :o

I would worry if I had NO spiders in my house, something is wrong when you don't see any.

I've noticed more spiders, but more insects in general.

I suspect the increase is due to both pesticide bans (in Ontario where I live) and more accurate pesticides in farming use. Broad spectrum insecticides aren't used much anymore and I suspect this is helping the little buggers survive.

The answer for you here is ...... get some MORE Cats  ;D

Plenty of spiders outside.... but when you've got 6 bug eating furballs running around the house very few spiders survive (even in the basement).  This also goes for moths, flies, and pretty much anything smaller than they are  ;)

The only bind I found with that CBJoe, was I had a Tomcat that was supreme at bug killing until he grabbed a huge Bumble Bee and chomped on it, waited a secound and spat it out and ran around drooling for a while, after that no more bugs.

Yeah - we have a TON of spiders here, too.
I think the latest brood hatched not too long ago and now those little one are maturing & looking for Lebensraum.
The common garden types are nothing more than a nuisance. But then there's all the freakin black widows... The over population will die off as the food supply dwindles in the winter.

We won't spray, either.
I've heard diatomaceous earth will work on spider but cannot confirm.

We buy a dozen praying mantis egg sacs every spring and set them outside the house. Those suckers will eat ANYTHING! Spiders included. Plus they're so damn cool - like a hoard of freaky green aliens running around the yard.  8)

I leave a porch light on all night so we get lots of moths and stuff that shows up.  The whole porch is now covered in spider webs.  Do you have a light outside that attracts other insects because if you do the spiders will also show up and probably make it into the house.

Did you know that if spiders were the size of house cats they would be the dominate species on plant earth.

Between the weird hypothetical situation and the typos... Have you been drinking?  :D  What if they were a bit smaller than house cats but all had laser pointers?
