Canadian Travel by Norton
« on: September 23, 2010, 02:11:07 PM »
Saw a flick called "One Week".
Guy is told he's dying so he takes off cross country on a Norton.
Tells everybody to "stick it"--girl friend, parents etc.
Great scenery!--all the way from Toronto to the West Coast.

Not a bad film, unless you live in BC. If you do, then it gets confusing as we all knw how strangely edited it was ::)

I did notice that the totem poles from the park in Vancouver (I was there last year) followed very closely
on the shots of Banff (sp?).

Makes me want to do the exact same trip on my CB...

Was it just me, or did it seem like he was in the prairies about three hours outside of Toronto?  Good movie though, beautiful bike as well.

Incidentally, the Arctic Watershed sign is about an hour and a half from my house.  And the Beaver Post (the tourist trap with the teepee out front)  is an actual tourist trap about two and a half hours in the same direction.

I plan on doing the reverse trip in 3 years..

Ship the bike to B.C. and ride back. If the plan works, my wife will meet me in Ontario to finish the last few legs to Halifax with me.

Shore to shore

Already started work on the mounts for my CBX fairing and Krauser hardbags.

Now if I could just find that map.........

The difference being I am doing this trip because I am living, not because I am dying........

Hey Operator "Good", for you, if you have time it would be good to meander about and check on the interesting small towns, sigh, but that could take a life time.

I would love to take about a month and be able to get lost a few times along the way, but I don't think work will allow more than a couple of weeks. My pace will depend on how much leave I can get.

Thanks for the encouragement

Go remind the Warrant of his younger days and see how much you can squeeze out with weekends and whatever.

That was a great movie...just the fact that I recognized so many places and the taking off on a bike cross country is a dream of mine!!  They even hit up the Big Nickel here in Sudbury!! Woohoo...

Good for you Operator!! That's awesome that you're doing it!

Hhey Operator that sounds like an awesome trip. When you come out west start in Tofino on Vancouver Island, that's the real pacific coast and quite the beautiful place. The island is dream riding all by itself. I think seaweb will agree.

We just drove from Seattle to Manitoba and back this past summer. The prairies take what seems more like three days to cross not three hours! We met a guy riding a big road Honda with trimming and trailer from Winnepeg back to Duncan from a family fling. We kept running into him at rest stops, restaurants, campgrounds. Really nice guy. (You meet the nicest people on a Honda and on the prairies) He said he remembers why he doesn't ride his bike back home too often. It's too easy to fall asleep riding across the "gap"! Talk about numb-nuts. BTW my wife is Canadian and she is from the prairies.

I actually considered doing the ride in the name of a charity I am linked to just to get the extra community service days off ;).........

But then I realized even though I would likely get the days off, I wouldn't be doing it for myself anymore.

As for the CoC, I am sure I would get a few short days tossed in my direction. They know me well enough to know I usually use up my days in the summer during rally season.........plus a few of them are riders themselves

It is still a ways off, but I honestly am starting to get a little excited about the prospect of this adventure.

Sounds like a great idea!

I know it's a ways away, but if you plan on riding through Winnipeg, let me know. Perhaps some Canadian members can show you some hospitality along the way!

I'm in southwest Quebec, 45 minutes south of the T-Can, but I have lots of room for an overnighter in this big old farm house if it's a help.

Just wish I could go with you.  :)

I am getting offers for places to crash 3 years from now......

This is why I have come to love this community, and it also shows our true "canadian colours"

I am just starting the early stages of mapping a route so if anyone has any suggestions that are not too far off the Trans Canada, please pass them on to me. I have never travelled west of the ON/MB border so I know there are tons of things that I would likely pass by not knowing they were even there.

BTW this was not intended to be a thread hijack, I will move this to the travel board when I get some time.

Make sure you post the link in here when you move to the travel thread...I don't want to miss any of it...the planning...the prep...trippin'.... Very cool.  AND if you're looking for a rest near the big nickle...I'm only 10-15mins off the Trans' Can thru Sudbury.  I'd gladly put ya up for a night and have some beers with ya!
