The Anti-Pod
See page 36 #898 for info
No longer making, but you can still get the pieces, pg 36, #898

Up until now, if you wanted to remove the stock air box, you had two choices.  Run Pods, knowing there will be tuning problems; or run stacks for easier tuning, and figure out some home made filter arrangement.  Most of which negate some, or all of the stacks effectiveness.

This filter kit is offered for the 550 & 750's running stock carbs.  The kit is designed to replace the stock air box, but retain stacks to enhance tuneability.  ITG make these same type of filters for F3000 & Ford DFV's, as well as filters for Renault F1.

The filter kit -  mounted on my 550 / back plate with stacks mounted / kits readied for shipping.

The filter kit will include - the filter / back plate drilled for the application / x4 custom velocity stacks prefitted.  As for pricing, it should be similar to 4 750 K&N's + a set of custom stacks.  Shipping of the 1st ones should be early in the new year.

The stacks are molded units based on the stock Honda, so they include the all important step at the throat.  However, there has been a significant change made.  As the filter is designed to mount at the end of the stack, this area has been changed.  The interior sealing ring will now be a 1/2 round bell mouth, with a smaller ring on the outside.  The 750 version will be available 1st.

Ordering / Payment:

Basic Filter Kit (550 or 750) - Multi layer foam filter, alloy back plate pre-drilled, x4 molded black velocity stacks, x4 SS clamps

> $255 Cdn. SOHC members (as of 05/12) / Retail (eBay etc.) $289 Cdn. (+shipping)

Deposit - $120   Balance due when ready to ship.

Prefer Paypal > email - brian.robinson7@sympatico.ca , and enter a note that it is a 'deposit for filter kit'.
Please include your SOHC4 Forum name, along with your location.  If Paypal doesn't work for you, email me to work out an alternative.

Though you might like this ffj. :)

Still working on a final price, which I won't have that until the custom 750 stacks are done.  That should be in about 2/3 weeks.  As for a breather attach, that could certainly be added easily enough.  However, it would might result in the need, for more frequent cleaning of the filter element.

Intriguing.

Good to know that this option will be out there.  My interest level will depend on:

1) Whether or not this setup will clear my top shock mount once I'm converted to monoshock.

2) How it looks.

3) Whether I can justify going for CRs or if it makes more sense to stick with the stockers.

Thanks for taking the initiative on this - can't wait to see how it works out for you.

FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

Hey Syscrush, thanks for the interest.

Once I have done the initial fittings, I can give you an idea of space requirement, as measured back from the carbs.  As for looks, well that has always been in the eye of the beholder. ;) :)  Personally, I think they are going to look very trick. ;D

Given how much less air restriction there will be over a stock air box; I think there should be plenty of 'head room' with the stock carbs.  Time & testing will answer the question of just how much though.  I do not have a definitive answer yet, but ITG have indicated that the filter would be rated at about 180hp. ;)

Nice stuff TT......subscribed. I am going to do my own version of a modded air box by increasing the size of it for more volume, just a different approach for more volume..... ;)

That seems pretty cool, the 550s need some air filter options. I once used airconditioner filter and aluminum screen zip tied over the carbs as a temporary fix and it turned out surprisingly well (similar concept)

I have a question. What holds these on so they dont just fall off the carbs? It looks like it will be heavier then pods or stacks and it attaches to the stock boots. So what keeps it from hanging down and falling off?

Good question - the filter will come as a kit with x4 custom molded stacks pre-fitted (& x4 SS clamps optional).  The basic stack body is the same as stock, and attaches to the carb the same way.  The big difference is at the inlet end, were the filter mounts.  Instead of the original bell mouth, the new stacks have a 'rolled' entry.  This '1/2 donut' is solid and the flat back acts as the inner sealing ring.  There is a 2nd sealing ring behind this that is the exterior seal.  Together they hold the filter in postion.  The 2nd advantage to this design is that it is multidirectional regarding air flow.  The original stack is a unidirectional design in that the bell mouth can only pull air from directly in front.  With the 'donut' against the back plate the new stacks will draw air from a 180 degree arc around the mouth.

Thanks DYSKORD.  Would seem from the posts that there is interest, and pricing will be coming shortly.  I have to place orders with the manufacturer in lots of x10, so will be looking for firm commitments at that time.

I'm firm on wanting them, but I'd really appreciate some insight on how they actually run if at all possible.  Otherwise, I'll still get em and if I don't like em, someone on here will buy them!

One other question ttop, is the foam the only choice for filter elements available?  It seems like it would degrade over time like Uni filters can...
