This will be an interesting month for sure.  Very nice bikes in both styles!

Sorry so late in getting this one started folks.  Life got in the way again.   ;D

I will reset the ending time later so it is in the evening instead of the morning of the 28th.

I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

It is going to be a difficult decision this month, as always though.  There are some mighty fine builds on this site.

One thing I am having trouble with is viewing photos in this thread and others. In this post  the photos come up as partial images, just little slivers. The photos that are loaded through the site are fine, those uploaded from somewhere else are the ones that show up as little slivers. I have a new Emachines E725 with Intel dual core and windows 7. Anyone have any idea...Larry

Never mind, just went back to review and all the images are there, just took a long time to upload.

This will be tough for me.  Tintop has a very nice ride, sohc836 has some interesting things going on there (see his build thread), and both of those stockers are nice nice nice!  I would not have the ball's to do those year stockers.  If I can find something worthwhile to start with around here, I would have the balls to build something like Tintop and sohc836.  Perty much run out of things to do on momma's bike. Basically just new paint, reshape and recover the seat.

The cafes, especially these two, are going to be tough competition.  I've always wanted to do one and actually almost did my K0.  But once I got into it and found out how close it was to a sandcast I decided to go resto.  Of course that's what got me into getting a sandcast and another and another....  ::) There are challenges to doing either a cafe or restoration.  Both require a lot of attention to detail and I can appreciate what goes into a nice build but for now I'll probably be a stocker fan.  That's why I like egar's too.  I love the gold color and I'm planning on doing my K0 that way when I get my other projects done.  Again, it's an honor to be competing against you guys.  Good luck to all of you.

I'll echo markb's sentiment in what an honour it is to be nominated, and be a part of BOTM.

I also see that markb has also wasted no time adding more photos, and a video.  Good thing I just got one, so you can hear the 4 Swarbrick's. ;) :)   

Part 1 of the bike's story -
When I 1st decided to get another bike, after many years away, it was to be a 'commuter'.  The CB 550 fit the requirements perfectly, and there were lots around.  Figured I would make a couple of small changes  ::), to make it 'better'.  After all it only needed new spokes, complete suspension rebuild, and I'm not sure what was last in the tank.  The tear down consisted of 3 piles.  Stuff to keep, rebuild, reuse / eBay / junk.  Didn't keep much, next to nothing for eBay, lots for the scrap metal guy.  Then I stopped, to decide what I wanted to rebuild.  Stock, as an 'F' with some mild changes, cafe?  The frame then sat on a WorkMate in my over size kitchen.  As I wanted / needed a new tank, I quickly settled on the 76/77 750 F tank.  It then joined the frame, while I looked for a seat tail.  The Airtech SBK 750 won, along with their Thruxton fairing.  At that point I started making the paper templetes for the gussets, seat & tank mounts.  I had my picture, time to start bringing it to life.  One of the things I don't do is weld.  So after much discussion, the templetes, the frame & other bits went to Denis Curtis & Byron @ CMR for the frame changes.  The biggest change I had planned was to add a SuperBike brace to the swingarm.

Just like the kitchen, but in steel.  The tank has been move forward about 3/8", and the steering stops were later welded.

Super Bike brace added to the stock 550 arm.  Arm was rebuilt by hondaman using an earlier, double grease nipple shaft.  The threaded bungs for the rear sets have also been welded in place.

Part two - making it handle, & stop:

The top priority for me in any build, has always been to make sure that it handles and stops.  It is were I always put the most effort.  The SBK swingarm brace, and additional gussets were the beginning.  To further reduce vertical frame twist through the swingarm pivot, and make sure the shocks were acting against a firm base two additions.  The first was the addition of the electrics tray.  Rather than use a flat sheet, sheet was welded to the support rails, and rear seat mount.  The 'folded' shape add a great deal of rigidity, much like a race car monocoque chassis.


The 2ND addition was the battery tray.  The tray it's self was milled from my CAD design, then polished, and anodized.  Given that improving handling was the goal, lowering the centre of gravity by placing the battery as low as possible was important.  The tray is secured by 6mm bolts through bungs welded to the frame.  The solenoid was also moved, and now bolts to the bottom of the tray, much closer to the starter.


At the front the plan was fairly basic.  The forks were rebuilt with new tubes from Frank's, and RaceTech Gold Valves installed.  Mission Cycle, a RaceTech certified shop is only 1/2 hour away, so the forks went to Todd to be assembled.  Todd not only installed the GV's, but also tested the springs and then 'matched' them.  A custom solid fork brace was designed, and then machined by Tkat.  The next change to the front end was the brakes.  Going with dual disks was always part of the plan, and reversing the calipers considered a performance improvment.  Getting caliper alignment turn out to be easy, following bwaller's suggestion to mill the pivot pin.  A set of custom brake lines from pampadori, and drilled disks from formulasuper completed the changes.  The final addition was a steering damper.

So, how legal is that tail light?

Completely, it's an LED replacement (http://www.customdynamics.com/index.htm) for the Yamaha Warrior's LED. ;)  I think it's 'strobing' in the video because of the camera.  It's actually solid red, which intencifies when you apply the brakes.  1/2 flashes yellow for turn.  Best part was how nicely it fit the cowl opening.  Searched lot of web sites before I found it!

The last installment in the bike's story.

The video got up thanks to some help from TipperT, so I guess you all know about the Swarbrick pipes. ;) :)

These are some of the other special parts and features.  The fork brace has been already mentioned, and is detailed in the build.  As is the conversion to a rear cable brake system.  From my CAD came the battery tray, and hold down clamp; the dash, chain guard, front fender brackets, and exhaust clamps.  The two main pieces that are unique - the air filter & stacks, and the oil filter system.  The air filter is covered in much detail in its own thread.  I would however, like to thank Frankenstuff for the terrific work on the custom back plate.  Also kudos for the points cover.

The last item is the remote oil filter system.  Without Terry in Australia's machining magic, and ability to understand my cryptic emails, it never would have happened.  Many thanks Terry.

I am sure I missed it in your build thread but are we missing a part of the engine mount?  I know the 750 up close but not yours.
