I'll try cleaning the points tonight.

So went to the shop tonight to work on the bike.

Picked up a point file and ran it across the points a couple times. Checked spark. It was Good!!!

So I gave it a try starting it up... and... (click on the photo, its a video)

Awesome. Now it time to start taking it all apart.

Sounds good , may I ask what the ladder is for? Did you plan to jump off when the bike wouldn't start

Actually I honestly suprised that just cleaning the points would allow it to start. I was prepared to be working most of the evening and in to the night. I even had a picked up a pizza and was eating dinner while working on it. not sure how much help jumping of the ladder would have been though...

The ladder is acting as a stand for my remote gas tank.

Tore down the bike today. The plan is start by cleaning up the frame and repainting it. Then move on to cleaning and repainting the engine. Put the engine back in the frame, and start rebuilding piece by piece.

This is how it sits right now.
Its amazing how fast it comes apart.

I love the tearing down bit, its so easy and satisfying, but putting back together takes about 100 times longer
Do you plan on rebuilding the engine?

No, I dont plan on it since I got good compression and the engine started so easily, warmed up didnt knock, and shifted through all the gears smoothly.
Also since parts a little harder to find for this engine, its staying the way it is for now.

So with the bare frame now, Tomorrow's plan is to install new tapered bearing. Then its time to sand, sand blast and rough up the frame for primer and paint.

With that said the next step is to paint the engine. Does anyone have any advice on how to do this properly? Im planning on VHT paint, but what prep should I do?

Just a couple of quick updates.

Started cleaning the frame and getting the engine clean.
As you can see the frame has some primer on it.
I built a little craddle for the engine to help with the clean up and painting.

Took care of the stem bearings today. New Tapered bearings installed. Hopefully by Tuesday of this week it will be warm enough to paint the frame and triple trees here in Wisconsin.

So its about time for an update here.

Recent progress includes a painted frame, swing arm, kick stand, center stand, and engine. As well as lots of polishing done on various parts.
Letting the engine paint cure for as longs as possible before putting it back in to the frame.

Lots of progress since my last post.

Continued cleaning and painting parts and such. And then started assembly. Its starting to look like a motorcycle again!

One question do have is if a 76f seat will fit a 78. I have been having a hell of a time trying to find a 77 78 seat and now that the corbin seats have many unresolved issues im trying to find a stock seat. I've found a 76 seat but looked up the part numbers and the appaear to be different. Does anyone know if it will fit?

Still needs a bit of tuning but not running bad. Now I'm just waiting to find a seat and waiting on the tank, sidecovers, and rear cowl to be painted.

Congrats! You've done a real nice job getting the scoot all cleaned up. The black motor on black frame looks tough! Can't wait to see the tins painted on it.

Well I got lucky yesterday... I found a seat at a salvage yard just out side of Madison. Its for a 75 or 76, but I have a 78 cowl that is being painted currently. I also have a 78 seat cover. I almost walked away with nothing but on my last resort walk through my eye caught one. Was able to pick it up for $30. The pan is in really good shape. The cowl has a minor scratch on it and the chrome strips are intact and good. I plan to sell the cowl and strips. The seat seems to fit on the bike with no problems so once its all done up you shouldnt be able to tell.
