Hi guys, long time lurker, first time poster.

I have a question regarding the exhaust systems. Forgive all noobism.

Whats the difference between exhausts, for instance 4-2-1, 4-1, 4-2, etc?

Is there any performance gain, volume, deeper pitch... or is it purely different exhausts do diff things?

Cheers n ta

Quick one.

Working on a friend's bike.  #14 on the fiche is shot, literally snapped in half.  Can I replace it with the same diameter fuel line from Napa, or do I NEED to order from Honda due to the 90 degree bends in it? (i.e. would you expect it to kink off if I tried just regular fuel line?)

Back in the a days these bikes were current, 4-1 were performance plays. There were shoot-outs in the magazines where they fitted CB750s with all the different pipes, did some minor jetting and ran them down the dragstrip. To the winner went the spoils (sales). RC Engineering was often the top pipe, and sales, with Jardine giving them a run. jardines suffered in the looks category and didn'tsell too well IIRC.  After Jardine sold out and RC closed, Kerker bubbled up as the strongest pipe mostly on their reputation with the larger 1000cc SuperBike racing series, as the 750 class was losing popularity.

Yoshimura's pipe was perhaps the strongest, but they didn't offer a street legal version so it was often excluded from these tests.

Nowadays, it seems to be mostly a looks and convenience contest. Mac wins for economy, but I wonder about the performance. Seldom if ever tested. 2-1s are good for bikes that want throwover soft bags or hard bags. Ground clearance suffers, but judging from comments on this forum, that's the furthest from most peoples minds.

The new(er) CycleX 4-2-1 is interesting. Why go to the trouble if not to produce better power and clearance? Their's may be a good offering. I'd like to hear and see a test.

Kit, you could also try finding some metal brake or fuel line (or transmission cooler line) of the correct size and bending it yourself.   It will be cheap and easy to cut but may take a few trys bending it that tight without kinking it too badly...
If it works good, it looks good...

Dpending on where the bad places are on the original line, looks like you might be able to patch it with some appropriately sized fuel line..how is the original damaged?

Anyone know of a good clear fuel-proof coating that protects new tank decals from gasoline?

Good thread idea. Here's a simple little question:

I got a UNI foam filter for my '76 550 but I forgot to order the oil that goes with it. So what can I use to oil it up? And do I just spray it all over the thing?

I'd go with filter oil - it's sold in either aerosol cans or in liquid form at pretty much all dealers and some auto parts stores.  Brand specific isn't all that important (ie, K&N on a UNI filter) though some may disagree.

Do not use 'cloth filter' oil (K&N) on foam.  There are both filter oils & cleaners made specifically for foam, a can of each will last years.

Checking oil - screw dipstick in ?
Plug gap with Dyna , pods, Mac exaust and 5 ohm coils , CB400F ?
Best chain to use ?
Stock motor, which octane fuel with the above setup ?
Will teflon tape wrapped around a weeping bleeder valve break down and fail ?
Just to ask a few........ :D

No

Stock spark gap

Best chain to use ?
Not simple to define substitutes other than stock recommendation.  It is rare that personal opinions are based in foundational fact.
When in doubt, the bike manufacturer knows best.

Stock motor, which octane fuel with the above setup ?
Regular

Will teflon tape wrapped around a weeping bleeder valve break down and fail ?
Unlikely.
Teflon tape would be misused as a thread anti seize, as the threads only seal fluids (poorly) during bleed operations.

If it is leaking, the leak is at the taper end-to-seat interface.  And you DO NOT want to put teflon tape there unless you are hiding defects from a prospective buyer.

Also, don't ignore the importance of the rubber dust and water ingress blocking cap.  It's absence is probably the leading cause of the bleeder seizing in the caliper and corrosion down at the tip to seat interface.

It snapped in half.

If the long piece broke in the middle, just trim the ends and find a piece of fuel line that will fit over it. Couple small hose clamps, just like downtown.

Here's a quick one guys.  K8 750, trying to change my front sprocket.  Is it possible to get the sprocket cover off without removing the shifter cover? Is there a trick I'm missing, or will I be in the market for a new shifter cover gasket soon?

TIA

A very serious pain actually, I don't think it's possible.  I've tried every angle I can come up with and nothing's working.  Guess I'll be needing a new gasket....
