I met a guy in a biker bar one afternoon who swore his HD dyno'd at 205hp...I told him I was skeptical of that but he was pretty earnest in that he had it tested.  Said he had a dual turbo set up from someone he expected me to know.

Anyone out there ever seen a Harley V Twin with that kind of power?

I like the looks of the XR1200, it does not ride bad, but the motor looks like a  jack russell terrier on a short leash.

...more perspective for ya...my box stock(except for 4 into 1 and admittedly quite tired engine)regularly gets smoked by my buddies 1000cc Ironhead sportster(has some port work and modified cam timing)...unless there is a curve in the road!  It always works out the same but we never get tired of testing :P...straight road-he walks away from me...curved road-vice versa...and really in the grand scheme of things a stock cb750 is considered a bit of a wallowing fat pig in the handling departement.  We both have a great time ribbing each other over our machinery choices.  The hardware store lady in question?...probably doesn't even ride.
If it works good, it looks good...

But then, it is pretty petty to try and compare 30+ year old bikes to much more modern bikes.

What the hell are you talking about?
Harleys are older technology than your 30+ Honda.
Even the new ones.  ;D

But what are the running weights of those HDs'? The xr1200 is  573 pounds ready to run. the 883 which sure as hell wont have 90hp, weighs 565.
What are the top speeds of these harleys? Many rattle themselves apart before 90. So then, what type of race are we talking about? 1/4 mile? Road race?
I don't doubt plenty of hd will beat us in a short distance race, they have the torque for it. But not many will walk away in a distance race, especially once you add in corners.
But then, it is pretty petty to try and compare 30+ year old bikes to much more modern bikes. Compare it to the equivalent year hd and hd does not stand a chance.

Not too mention what the HD guy has had to spend to get those numbers. Give me 5 grand and i'll go buy a 2nd hand Hyabusa and hose every HD on the planet.....

That's pure marketing genius....making the riding experience on an inferior bike something that's overshadowed by the riders' posing and the "look at me! look at ME!" opportunities.  That's really despicable, and to think that this is all about IMAGE and how Harley Davidson has chosen to market their product.  It has NOTHING to do with performance.  ::)

I was just at the Kickstand Lodge last weekend and they were hosting a Shovelhead get together.
Over all they were a pretty good group of people.
They like to ride the old iron and are quite proud of them.
What was funny is that they have nothing good to say about the Evo bikes.
They don't like the Harley dealers because most, if not all, won't work on the older bikes.

The evo guys think the old bikes are junk, the shovelhead riders think the evo guys are all weekend warriors and they all look down on Sportsters.
Kind of like the Muslims. If they can't find someone else to fight with, they fight with each other.

I think everyone wants to think that what they have is best and if you don't ride what they ride then you aren't $h!t.

Crusier riders, sport bike riders, dual sport riders, standard riders, rat riders, bobber riders, chopper riders, brat riders, motocross riders, enduro riders, trial riders, metric, european, american,(mostly metric anymore), etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.

What we all have in common is, we are riders.
If we all rode the same bikes, it would get kind of boring. Although, there wouldn't be a shortage of spare parts though!

Run what you brung, chop what you got and ride till you died!

Go ahead and get a 'Busa,, but that is not what this forum is about..

They day we put 500 cash into an 883 and got 12.7 first time at the track I started going..hmmmmm..
That was stock carb with aircleaner box, and stock pipes partially opened up... and I remember thinking... my 836 cost more to do and it aint gonna make this one look bad.. BTW the 883 owner had and 836 too, we both did..

I dont know what kind of v-twins you got where you guys live, but there is some pretty strong ones around here.. and yes at least one has around 200hp and is a streetbike..

I guess my poorly stated point was it was not a Harley motor, it was a V Twin, but did not have any parts in common with the iron made in Milwaukee.  I was skeptical of calling it a 205 HP HD motor...  ::)

went to hardware store today to get bolts and see about way to mount headlight on BABY, my 76 CB750F.  Lady asks what kind of bike an I tell her, an she says..."That's what ya get for buying Japanese #$%*".  I wanted to freakin hit her right in the mouth.  Instead, I simply smiled, paid for my bits an pieces, and said to her "Only constipated stupid #$%*s need the vibrations from a Harley so they can get on with thier lives" and walked out.  Pissed me off so dammed bad.  What is it with people.

She is a moron,  nothing new, there is plenty of them out there.  More her problem than  yours, IMHO:)

I am a lot calmer now.  been a few days since the incident.  what really irks me is the stupidity of some peopel.  I have been to Hog Rock on my GoldWing and was treated decently, my pa on his Shadow.  we have been to various other large events in Indiana and Ilinois over the last ffew years, and yeah you can tell the Good Harley riders from the Bad ones just by thier atitudes.

And how big do those v-twins need to be to make that hp? A cbr 600 is making about 100. A sportster is not making that from a significantly larger engine. Look how much larger the buell at daytona was, racing against 600s.

What a boring place it would be if we all rode the same thing.
Twins have always produced less HP than inline 4's that's why the class rules allow larger displacement twins to compete with smaller multi's. Ducati has this displacement advantage in World Superbike too.
At the end of the day, does it really matter what configuration turns your crank?

This is the BS nit picking that fosters the ignorant attitudes that this thread was all about, so stop it, children or you’ll be sent to your rooms!

That is about it jimmy. No 1 bike does everything perfectly. I, personally, do not care what someone else rides. I like my 78 but I like other bikes too. If I had the cash, I would get an Aprilia Shiver and probably and the xr1200. I would love a v65 but I would also ride a 250 ninja.

I do not think it was a Virago motor, so no...

I do dislike the Harley Davidson Motor Company, I had the pleasure of doing significant business with them, they are arrogant,  inbred, self righteous, posers, right up to the VP of manufacturing. But that is just my personal judgment based on people who do not know how to design a part holding system that will not induce a error into the part greater the allowable Statistical tolerance, and then defend it like it was a gift from their deity.

I am skeptical of 200 hp HD V-twin, which is why I asked what others experience is with this.  Skepticism does not mean I will not accept information contrary to my currently held opinion.

thanks for your response.

How is your two sided SS disk turning system working out?

I have not tried the disc turning toolholder yet should give it a try. Tried grinding a disc the other day with a mounted point on the Bridgeport.. it was flat disc about 8.5 inches supported only on inner bolt circle., and turned on the rotary table.. It was a dismal failure.(chatter)
I think I need proper cup wheel, maybe tilt head a half-thou... that may help.. and maybe set up faster motor on other end of ram of the mill.
I forgot you were the tooling guy, that must have been interesting working for the Motor Co.
I would say 200 hp on a v-twin pushrod motor is not real common, but is being done. I think my buddys hot single is making around 110 or 120 ish, and that is around a 950cc pushrod, blown motor. He did say a twin he worked on was around 200 or +. But the added torque makes quiote a difference vs an inline 4..
