Hey Fellas,

Since I was child I've always always been fond of automobiles. From my first car to my current one, they have always been modified in some way or another. I just can't seem to leave anything alone.

A month ago I decided to purchase a 1978 Honda CB550K. I wanted to take on a project and build a vintage bike to my personal taste with updated modern touches and technology. Some may label it a "Cafe Racer" but I prefer to call it my own.

After spending most of my free time on this board, I have learned more than I ever will... thanks to current/past contributing members of this forum. I wanted to document and share my build with you guys. Hopefully it'll come out as I'd hoped...


Day 1 -



























Sent some parts out for powdercoating and some polishing a couple weeks ago and finally back at home.











Will update soon...

I had quite a few parts done. Frame, wheels, misc parts, and some welding/frame modifications for $375.

Americoat in Orange, CA. They are pretty damm good. They do some of Carpy's stuff.

Engine Painted, some polished bits, new All Balls Tapered Bearings etc...








Breaking down ft. brakes, drilling, refinish...









New Oregon Cycle Regulator and Rectifier, clean and refinish electrical tabs...







Some goodies came in ;)

Nice bike mate, if you must use pods then use K&N those cheap ones are almost impossible to get running right, You will find out soon enough....

Damm, really? It's been rejetted with 105's, 14mm float height, 2nd needle from the top. I'll look into K&N.

Yep, these bikes have a velocity stack between the carbs and airbox and run extremely well in the stock format or a touch better with a K&N in the stock airbox. Most pods don't have a stack but the K&N do, its not the same dimensions as stock but its better than the cheap Emgo style pods. Even with the K&N's you will have to spend some time trying to get a good set up but pods allow rain and side wind to effect performance and will never tune as well as a stock airbox. Most common is low end "flutter" with pods. If you don't mind spending a little on a great filter, forum member Tintop has made what he calls an "antipod", it utilises the stock length stacks with a very efficient filter, here's a link.... ;)

I didn't like my previous gauge setup so changed a few things...

New speedo w/idiot lights
New fabricated bracket
Replaced the headlight ears with something sturdier
Top tree chopped and re-powdercoated
Left/Right Controls powdercoated, engravings refilled flat red

how is the fit and finish on the tank and seat? also did you go with metalr fiberglass? the reason I ask is there have been documented issues with some of Benjies tanks and seat and Im still deciding which way to go

The finish on the fiberglass tank and seat overall is good.  The tank lines and shaping need no extra prepping. The seat fitment however, needed a little massaging to sit properly.
