cb750 over the top first "build"
« on: June 17, 2011, 01:00:29 AM »
Hello!

I'm a new list member ... or at least this is my first post. Long story short, I'm building a 74 cb750. I will attach some pictures soon but I keep getting rejections on picture size.....

I am seriously under equipped to do most of the mechanical work my self ... and I have more money than time or sense. So, this is a disclaimer stating that most of the heavy lifting on this project will be done by others. But let's get down to some present details.

swing arm is with hondaman for a rebuild
2008 gsxr forks hard anodized black
custom aluminum triple trees with cb750 stem pressed in
cr750 aluminum gas tank
cr750 aluminum oil tank
tarozzi rearsets
carpy yoshi knock-off exhaust
Ikon 7614 shocks
CR29 carbs

Motor stuff: (built by M3 racing)
Bored and honed with 836cc JE pistons
Megacycle hardweld cam
Slipper tensioner
Racing cam chain
1.5mm oversize intake valves
Std ex valves (Black Diamond KPMI)
Heavy duty spring kit with Ti retainers
Serdi valve job
Ports throats opened up 80-85% of valve head size
New valve guide seals
New gaskets, oil seals
New primary chains and tensioner
HD clutch/springs.
Joker Machine point, clutch, starter motor cover and tappet covers.
Dyna S ignition
Top cam control cover

More to come.

Cheers!

did this ever develop?  Given the size and ambition of your laundry list, I know the first problem I would've run into was cash flow.  I hope you didn't have that problem, as this could be awesome :)

Seems a bit ambitious.  I love the "I have more money than time" bit.  ::)
Looking at the fact that, it took him a year to post 1 post, and it's been months with no follow up, I'd say this grandiose plan never came to fruition.

That laundry list is actually paid for.

I'm waiting for my frame to get back from Mark at M3 racing and then assembly will start. Pictures will follow.

I figured taking progress photos would be more interesting than just a pile of parts.

Here are a few static pictures of parts for you so I can silence the doubt. Again, more to come.

Hey orygun, you are still here!
Welcome to the forum.  It's nice to see that you actually have all that stuff.  I was hoping my dig would at least yield a comeback post, but pics to boot...I'm eating a little crow.  ;D

Keep the pics coming, I love to see all the fancy parts and stuff that I can't afford.  I'm glad someone can.  ;)

oh ho ho!  that's what I like to see :)  I'm jealous (what else is new) and am looking forward to the progress.  Pictures of the projects, no matter what stage, are always welcome and encouraged ;)

I wish you would tell us something about the parts.
Like what kind of shocks and the cost and length.

Gas tanks cost?

Talk to us.

I mentioned the shocks in my original post. They are the Ikon 7614 model. The were built specifically to my weight. I've heard they are a bit of a pain to setup properly, but I plan being the only rider so ease of adjustability wasn't a concern.

The price on the gas and oil tank was as horrendous as you might expect. I sourced them through meadspeed at about $700 each *COUGH*

The frame is with M3 racing getting all the tabs for the CR tanks and oil cooler put on and a tapered headset. Once I get it back it will be time to get moving again.

The new developments are that I got my swing arm back from hondaman, the exhaust from carpy is here, the built engine from M3 racing arrived, and I also received a seat from the wrenchmonkee folks in Europe. It's a replica of the seat from the gorilla bike they made. I plan on modifying it to work with the CR oil tank spout.

Next up is removing the old bearings from the harley front wheel and pressing in new ones that fit the gsxr front axle.

so what did you end up doing for the GSXR stem/CB750 frame steering bearing issue?

I had a set of triple trees made for me that solve a couple of issues.

1. Modified angle to compensate for steering geometry differences after the swap
2. Fit the gsxr fork tube size
3. Uses the stock cb750 steer tube so I didn't have to mess with mix and match bearings. I just had the tube pressed out of the stock trees and pressed back in to the new trees.

Where did you get the tree's made mate.? Isn't it great that Suzuki and Honda used the same sized steering stem base.... ;)
What offset did you have the clamps made up too.? I am using earlier GSXR forks from a 1990 model, 43mm right side up, trying to keep the bike looking like a modern version of the old girl.... ;D

Cafe Fabrications machined the triples and anodized them for me. I can't recall what offset was used...

That site definitely has some nice stuff. I too like the wheels. I'm looking forward to seeing this build come together. If my geometry is way off I might give them a ring to make me some trees also.

Finally got the frame back. Here are some more pics. Lots of little things modified by m3 racing. Waiting on the rear sets to come back to mock up the plates for mounting. Dropping the front end off next week to have spacers and adapters made for mounting the spoked front wheel to the gsxr forks/disks.

Sloooooow progress, but progress just the same.

Sign me up! Sounds like this is going to turn out pretty special.

What did you have done to the engine? Port? 836? Cam?

Thanks and good luck!

andy750,

Motor mods were posted towards the beginning of the thread.

branEn,

I'm located in Hood River Oregon.

Anyone have suggestions for where to source Excel rims in black? I want to order from Buchanan's but they don't seem to have anything other than silver ...

Cheers
