What's going on with my timing??
« on: August 01, 2011, 08:18:49 AM »
Did a tune up over the weekend.
Did timing with the static method then pulled out the strobe to double check.
At idle:
1-4 are fine: right on the "F" mark.
2-3 are jumping. The "F" bounces back & forth a few degress either way with no real pattern. The engine doesn't sound very smooth. It cleans up a bit if reved but it doesn't go a way completely.

so.... WTH?

(mosly stock 750K3 BTW. stock air box, OEM pipes.)

Bad condensors will do that.

Points "should" be good. They're TEC, not very old, just dressed, gapped & cleaned...
Condensors are the same.

But I will try swapping with others...

That shaft the points are may be bent.  There is something in the FAQ about it I think.  Use a dial indicator and bend it back straight....

+1 Sounds like a bent shaft to me. If anybody put a socket and breaker bar on that nut to turn the engine...especially with the spark plugs still installed, there's a good chance that shaft bent. Sadly, it doesn't take much...been there, done that (on an old trail bike years ago).

I thought about it being a bent shaft but it only happens on 2-3.
If it was bent it would also do it on 1-4, no?

The strobe should be a placid smooth appearance. There is a component of magic to it, so don't dismiss anything. Logic says if it happens to 2-3 it should happen to 1-4, esp about the shaft and the advancer.

A saying I picked up recently (from Click and Clack the Tappet Brothers, I think) "reality often astonishes theory".

My experience has been that the jumping is caused by weak springs on the advancer weights. New advancers are unavailable (Unless David Silvers Spares has them, they seem to come up with odd out of production pieces). Look at the coils of the advancer springs. They should all be laying against each other tight, with no spaces.

Can't say for sure that's what you're experiencing, but...it's worth looking in to.

Thanks for the link. As with every "magic" illusion, look deep enough and one can find the secret, per HM.

Here's why you never want to turn your motor with a socket on the points anvancer 'nut'......... that little shart can bend easily and mess-up the points cam 'trueness' for sure  :(

If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

well, how 'bout that.

I swear I'm just gonna send my bike to HM and have him iron out all the kinks - even the ones I don't yet know I have.
