Stator, rotor and coil field - matched as a set ?
« on: October 13, 2011, 05:07:37 AM »
1974 CB750K

In the process of cleaning up a 74 CB750.   I had a couple stators and field coils that came with the bike.   The rotor was still installed on the bike.

Never noticed this before, but, there are some small stampings on the rotor and the field coil - as if they are a matched set (same number on the stamp)

Are the stator, rotor and field coils produced as a matching set ?   Would I be ok mixing and matching the coil and rotors ?

The only reason I ask is, one of the coils looks brand new, the other has frayed wires and a smashed connector and looks beat-up a bit.   The beat-up

coil has a stamp that is the same as the stamp that is on the rotor.    Other than that, they are identical to my eye.

Am I over thinking this ?

Interesting question.  I'm guessing that any one of them could be replaced by themselves but I'm subscribing to see what the experts say.

While rare, stators do fail. They are replaced by themselves. I've had to do it myself. So no matching required. They may have been produced as a set, don't know. But not necessary to maintain as a "set". Use the best of the parts you have.

That's kinda what I was hoping.   I am notorious for over-thinking easy things.

Nope all come as seperate parts due to high quality control

Hi guys, I'm trying to change my stator today myself. The outer winding is probably the problem as I get continuity from the yellow leads to ground. The inner doesn't. But my question is: does anybody have a better trick than the one I am going to use tomorrow? Specifically, getting the winding out of the engine cover. I've got some four inch screws to hold the cover down to a block of wood while I try and get the three screws off the winding with an impact hammer. They won't budge otherwise. I had to stop working on it today because I needed to go out work get some four inch screws. Before I start hammering away, anybody got a better technique?

I've done a little comparison of 750A vs 750-all-the-others. The 750A has a 290W output vs 225W for all the others. The only difference I could tell was the field coil. On the 750A the stamped number is different as is the wire - larger diameter for less resistance = higher output. The 750A also uses a solid state reg/rec unit with different plugs/connectors that have additional duplicate wires apparently to handle the higher current flow. This can be made to work. Other than that mix and match at will.
