Oh Lordy..I found a CBX. Shoot me!
« on: November 13, 2011, 07:58:18 AM »
Well, I found a 1979 Honda CBX in my area. Bike is not running. In fact, the head is off.

A ton, and I mean a ton, of spare parts. Engine, 3 exhaust systems, 2 extra gas tanks, wheels, oh it goes on and one. Guy is retired, bought at an estate sale, no motivation to put it together.

My problem is:

1) no room in my garage for all this stuff.

2) might be more than I can chew.

3) not sure whether to make an offer or pass on it. It's not listed rather hiding if you will.

4) a little high on price for a non running, torn apart bike.

Chime in here guys.

Flea bay is just a pain in the a** to me anymore. To many fees, people complaining about shipping costs and wanting something for nothing.

I don't know what you are needing to pay for all of this, but if priced right, I would have it in my garage and I would have a CBX to ride next riding season!

Well, there is a heck of a lot of work there not to mention funding the project. The engine is apart and although there is a spare who knows what it needs. A complete rebuild?

Yes, would like to have it. On my want list but priced a little high.

I remember a line of 10 or so cbx's at the last Steamboat AHRMA week.  Now you just don't see as many of them around.

I think $3000 is a little much since everything is apart.  Granted you could sell parts "after" the build but a lot of overhead IMO.

When you see this you have to think different.

Sounds tempting but I'd pass if I were you. Torn apart, no garage, high price - three strikes.

I believe it is inside a small garage.

This picture was probably when he brought it home but since then ?????

I'm thinking $1500 myself. It would take $2500 to $3000 to make it presentable IMO.

I guess if I was in your situation I would pass (and kick myself for it for many years). Maybe get the word out to someone who will do a proper restoration on it instead of someone who "thinks" they can do it and then botches it all up.

That is a tough decision. Too bad the bike is apart, if it was together and turned over it would be a no brainer. be neat if the seller reduces the price and you could buy the CBX and get it running and restored. Would be a cool ride.

I think I see two heads, several tanks.  Lots of stuff, who knows if it is any good.  Several headers etc.  If you buy for resale, I'd like to get some shots of the 6:2 pipes.  Can't tell if they are original or maybe Kerker 6:2.  Either way, I have interest.

I noticed a couple on e-bay  today, starting bid at 4500,  another past that I believe.

I sent the guy a link to eBay since he told me to go there and see what they are selling for. Yes, they get up there in price but the bike is already done!  ;)

He never got back to me.

$3000 pass.  No friggin way is it worth $3k.  Parts are not selling on ebay like they used to you cant count on offloading the parts so if you spend $1500 to get the bike going you would be better off buying a together bike now for $4500.   I would offer the dude $1000 man its a parts bike and if he is so inclined buy the parts for $200 to $500.  $3000 the dude is trippin plus you would like to know WHY the top end is off a cbx motor rebuild will not be cheap I suspect, I have a 1980 cbx (black) and paid $400 with motor issues, a complete bike, stuck motor from sitting and neglect

Hondawggie, do actually know anything about the CBX's.? Its worth every cent of what he wants for it. Do you expect to be in recession forever.? That is a bloody good buy, the spare parts that wouldn't be used are worth the price alone. Get you head out of America and see what these bikes are fetching in that other place you probably have never heard of like , THE REST OF THE WORLD. I know 2 guys that restore these bikes, they sell almost as soon as they are finished and they will always be worth good money and appreciate. CBX owners are fanatics and these bikes will only ever go up in value.....

no it aint a good buy retro not here anyway

you see it is overpriced, do you hail from Australia?  Retro we do not have China buying our raw materials, our economy is not buoyed by China buying all the mined output of our country,  people want to come to Australia solely because (at least until your own housing market started to soften) the jobs were good because you have China buying all your raw materials it is well known that (perhaps until recently) the Australian economy was dang good man

Did you know that Arizona where he lives is the top of the worst states crashed by the recession, the housing bust, it is a bloodbath here -- no question Australia is cool dude and I 100% believe you, here its different

$3000 for a parts bike is a bad bad deal man.  In the US yes in Australia no I reckon

Thats my point, we used to buy 750 Honda's before the "retro" craze took off here, my boss was Japanese and we were getting 10 grand for clean bikes sent to Japan in the 1980's. What is wrong with buying it, putting it together and offering it for sale over seas..?
I buy most of my parts overseas because our "ride all year round" weather keeps our market strong. I could only find one for sale here in that model and it is advertised for 10 grand. The rest of the spares would also get good money in the right market place...

I agree with Retro Rocket. I am not going to say it is a "BUY". But, it is worth what he is asking. There are two things I wish for. It was closer and I had $3000 in my pocket! Anyone want to give me $3000 for my '81 Goldwing that I have owned since '81? If so, I will buy that CBX! It does have a title, doesn't it.
