My question is: How can you afford a set of original (or near original) pipes and mufflers? I looked for my 350f and the price was out of this solar system. A set of four into four almost like the originals would have doubled the cost (not value) of the bike. I settled for a four into one Laser. Looks and sounds good and affordable.

That is the dilemma in a nutshell when you prefer the stock 4-4 look. A year ago I had finished restoring my '74 550 and it was looking and running great with an aftermarket Mac 4-1 exhaust. At that point I had spent about $1100 on parts, tires etc. for the restoration. When I found OEM pipes for about $900, it made me pause to consider whether it was worth it to spend almost as much on OEM pipes as I had on the entire restoration up to that point. In the end I took that plunge, and now I am very happy I did. Now that guys ares saying they're being quoted up to $2500 for a replacement set, I can tell you for sure I would not have paid that much for them myself. I seriously doubt anybody would, but you never know.

Not sure whether an aftermarket custom 4 into 4 from Australia might interest you. Stll has the four pipes all the way through and sound fantastic - a bit like the originals with baffles removed. Here's a shot of them on my K2. They cost me about $900AUS six months ago and a club member here has them in stock. Mine are just sitting in place and need to be fixed at the rear when I sort out rear footpegs. Slug

Hi Slug750.. Can you tell me where you got those 4 into 4..?  They look good for my project bike....
I purchased a set of HM323 "originals" from CSMNL 4 years ago for A $800 landed in Oz..  And indeed !!!  they are just like the originals....!!   ie starting to rust out from blisters under the chrome..All over.  Within a year..... Ho..!!

A year ago I brought another set of same HM323 pipes/mufflers  from David Silver for A$900  landed at my door..  ( No additional tax in Oz if items are under $1000)   They are still in original packaging, unused/unopened... and this post has sent me running to check if they are OK rust wise...  They are....Phew..!!

I'm not familiar with the HM374 items  Are these like the later CB550 straight mega style??

G'day Pangloss! I got my 4 into 4 customs from Pud - he's in Yarram Victoria and does a lot of the engine work for members of the Victorian Four Owners Club. You'll get him on 0351825704. He had them in matt black or chrome and has just about anything you'd want for your K2. Good luck! Slug

374 pipes are identical to 323 pipes ECEPT for a whole load of "Blurb" rolled into the back of the silencers about how modifying the exhaust breaks Federal Laws (USA) and will bring down the God of nasties upon you

In the Parts List of my 500K2 [ED, F, G] (1976) silencers have the -374- number. BTW, there are many more parts that have the -374- number and are identical with the 550K2 '76 model. In a double test (CB500K2 '76 and CB750K6) in the biggest German motorcycle magazine MOTORRAD we read that one of the modifications were... thicker silencers.

On page 15 below in the middle (bold print) we read that the 'Blech' of the 'Schalldämpfer' went from 0,8 to 1 mm thickness. That modification could well explain the numbers went from -323- to -374- as they now were identical with the later 550 models.
In those days MOTORRAD was the most serious motorcycle mag in Europe and I can well imagine they had the info from Honda Germany or Honda Japan directly.

The HM 323 muffler sets I have do not appear to have a copper base for the chrome plating.. Just chrome onto steel.. Not good practise..

copper base was stopped in the 60s by most suppliers

"modern" plating is onto nickel- with top spec stuff (like we use) using two layers to stop water etc getting through what is a porous layer

the word "chrome" covers most things from "severe external use" to decorative quality for inside store displays

generally OEM was designed to last 2-3 years as they wanted you to trade it and buy that years new bike

Too bad I'm hearing the OEM stuff doesn't last.  That makes even $900 for a set unreasonable if it starts pitting after a year or two.  I found this on Amazon:

That's their site, but they list on Amazon directly.  Not encouraging that they have zero contact info.  Even if they did, I'm no longer convinced the quality warrants the price.

I'd pay 1K+ for a OEM "like" set that I knew was going to last.

Hi motad_UK.....are you saying that the chrome layer is porous.?? Would an electroplater be able to add additional thickness of chrome/nickel to a new  set of OEM pipes..?

Exactly! These bikes weren't intentionally designed to last for 40 years, it just worked out that way.

Thread resurrection!

I've been exploring various vendors in vain for some kind of 4 into 4 solution for the CB500.  My standard has basically be that they need to be chrome, but beyond that, not identical to stock.

Wondering if anyone has a source for reproduction 4 into 4!

I've been looking for a stock set since I got my CB550 last year.  The headers that came with the bike are in good shape but the muffler part had holes all over.  I'm thinking of cutting the mufflers off and slipping on new mufflers from Mikexs or similar.  They seem to have very similar looking mufflers to the originals.  I've never done this before so I don't know what the best way to attach them to the headers is.

Anyway, this is my plan since I haven't been seeing stock 4-4s for sale at all.

I still have the 71' CB500K0 with the Mac 4 into 1 exhaust.  Still looking for a decent 4 into 4 option after all these years.  My periodic searches still indicate the OEM system is pretty much NLA.  Haven't see any good reproduction options yet either.

Anyone else come up with something?

I've seen the CMSNL reproduction kit as well.  Though, 3 of the 4 pipes now say out of stock.

Not OEM, but CycleX has a new offering of CR replica headers that look kinda nice.  You have to buy 4 mufflers separate, but at $350 for the header kit, you could easily have a custom 4into4 setup for under $1k.

There are also some nice-looking "trumpet" style and reverse-cone mufflers out there that will fit (4into1, among others, has them), even for the 350F. My tack lately (on mostly 750 bikes) has been to re-chrome the header pipes, then install something like these. It might entail what I just did for the last one: I had the chromer add 3" of length to the sawed-off header pipes first, so I had plenty of room to work. It only cost $80 extra? Considering the chroming cost, that was noise... :(

I'll get rid of mine for $100 and shipping. stock '78 550k 4into4. one pipe does have a pretty nasty hole in it :/ I'm very inexperienced with these bikes and don't know if a hole is completely irreparable, but that's what I've got and I don't need them.

My 78 CB550K4 exhausts were pretty sanitary - but they went with the bike.  I really prefer the K exhausts of the 500/550 up to 1976.
