Nice Don ;D But that's all I can do is to have fun watching. Don't have 15K in the bank account right now ;D and I'm sure it will climb up quite a bit more before it's done, don't you.

I'm sure. Mine came from an auction and trust me, I didn't have 15K either. They are still around, just rare. I was so excited I could barely sign the papers.

Really, the only reason they're worth anything is because people like us think they are.

Does it need restoration work?

To be perfect, yes!  It's not completely original, so I wouldn't call it a 'survivor.'  It appears the frame needs fresh paint to stave off any further rusting/deterioration...that means total disassembly.  Things like fork seals, brakes, cables, rubber bits may need replacing...It all depends on what a buyer wants to do with it.

Yeah, it seems to me if it were COMPLETELY original you'd not touch it and leave the patina.

But since its had so much done to it, you'd have to finish it up, as the seller says. Time for someone else to take over the restoration.

The difference between original and restored.

But I'm just guessing.

My understanding of "original" is the exact same part that came on that bike from the factory. This one has different pipes, front fender, paint, side covers, seat cover, maybe more. Excellent reproductions perhaps, but not original. So its fate is to be further restored with the best of parts.

There is an original Sandcast in Dreyers Honda service shop in Indianapolis IN. Every part is the exact same part that came with that bike in the crate. No repros or swaps.

Yeah I can only wonder. Assembled and bought (or held back) by owner "Pops" Dreyer, RIP. I assume his son "Junior" who's got to be 75 years old is the owner now. I'm not sure if its ever seen the light of day.

How do you identify repro side covers?

The seller disclosed in the ad that he bought replacement sidecovers from Yamiya. They are top quality, but repros none the less.

Do those repro covers look "smoother" than the genuine covers? Any visuable differences?

Here is mine

I haven't seen one firsthand, so I don't know.

I saw your intro thread. Welcome and thanks for the story. I didn't notice in that thread, but I see it here. The emblem is on the sidecover backwards. The leading edge of the wing should point forwards.

Really, the only reason they're worth anything is because people like us think they are.

That's how it is for anything collectible.

Why would someone bid  a price like $14,499? did they not want to beat a $14,500 bid? I'd go $14,501 if I wanted to win the bid.

Who called this fishy? Oh, me.  I wish it was being bid up like crazy, I have one now.

That's not how bidding on ebay works.  The current showing bid will never be more than one increment above the next highest bid.  The current high bid could be anywhere from $14,999 up to the maximum bid allowed by ebay's servers.

Hmm, the last few bids shown are $13K, $13.5, $14,000  and now $14,499. I just wondered.
The next increment shown is $100 higher.
