O-rings for carbs...
« on: July 02, 2009, 07:11:27 AM »
So, since I'm a cheap PITA, I've decided I don't want to buy carb rebuld kits.  All of my components are good, I just need new o-rings.  Where the heck do you guys buy o-rings for these things?  The Carb FAQ has the sizes listed, but, by god, NOBODY makes them.  If anyone could give me a source, that would be greatly appreciated.  My carbs are stuck off of the bike until I get replacements.

Okay, I saw a gasket set at my local rip-off Honda dealer going for $12.  Would that be enough for all four carbs, or just one?

One carb per kit, the Honda kits are good quality and $12 is a good price.  I think they list at $30 or so.

You'll find what you need here, for short money, and they have no minimum order.
Please post your findings and their part numbers so others can order easily without all the head scratching.

Well, they do have an o-ring listed that matches the valve-spring assembly, but, sadly, it is out of stock.

They do not have a small enough o-ring for the main jet or the airscrew....the search continues.

A shot in the dark Doug but I have a good country hardware store in my neck of the woods here and he stocks o-rings of all sizes for plumbing and small engine repair etc. Has them in slide-out cardboard organizers and plastic compart-mented trays etc. Always find little bits and pieces there I need. Any chance you have one of those "older" real hardware stores around Portland. What size are these?

I did, we have one called "Tom's Hardware".  I thought that I had some matching (they were standard, but roughly the same size).  I got the o-ring on the main jet, seemed to be a nice fit.  Needless to say, there was nothing I could do to press that jet in there, just too big.  Even with lube.  And, sadly, this was their smallest o-ring.  Period.  I'm still going to try for the valve-spring assemblies.  I haven't tried the o-rings I sized for those, yet.  Kind of a pain.

Kind of a pain.

That's why I just use the Honda kits.  All the right o rings. They just fit and work.  As you've already proven, it's quite a time saver.  What's your time worth?  How much have you already paid on wrong parts?  How much more will you spend?
How much of this time is better spent on other things?

Ah, the wise words of TT.  How true.  So far, I've only wasted $0.59.  But, a little time, yes.  I just don't feel like laying down $50 for new gasket sets, I'm past frugal, I'm just cheap.  But, I understand your point.  I just can't get approval from the wife to spend $50 more on the bike, especially after I just got a $65 gasket kit for it.

I went to the local garage. The owner pointed at a drawer with about 500+ different sized O-rings.  Took me a while but I found what I needed for free ;D

That's about how it is with my build too, I just don't want to break the budget to finish the project, because after the next purchase there's some other part I'll need, and another and another, I'd just rather spread that out over a longer period of time and get the bills paid.

A while back, one of our members from Denmark posted something about getting o-rings through a lab supply firm.  I might be remembering a post from the Greenspun forums...

Apparently, no one has had to buy new o-rings?  Ever?

Where the heck do you guys buy o-rings for these things?

Portland, MI, eh?

Here in Vancouver, BC I did some calling around and stirred up a shop over in the industrial area called Wiarson Seals. They had O rings. O did they ever have O-rings. That's all they do: traffic in O-rings.

A quick google search found a similar type of shop in Portland, MI called Zatkoff. If your experience goes like mine, you'll be able to swing in there with the old, broken ones and come out with 2 sets of replacements and a nice smile from the old lady behind the desk for a buck!

It was a long time ago and I don't have the link anymore, but you might try Harbor Freight.

 Try the hydraulic shops also.

Theres one in the area where I get all my O rings and they have just about any O rings you could dream up. Some are so small you can barely see them, others are so big you can walk through them.

FYI - Depending on where it goes, you can cut and splice O-rings with a razor blade and super glue.  I wouldn't do this for O-rings inside the carbs but anywhere an O-ring is held in a groove on one side and clamped to a flat surface on the other, would be fine.
