If the head is otherwise good,  i believe Timesert makes a fix for it.

I have the Timesert kit for doing this, they use the same spark plug thread as our bikes, just shorter, so the kit is the same.  Only a 9mm reach, which is one of the reasons (I think) this seems to happen on this model a lot.  I had to order more short inserts, because I already used up all of my short ones that came in the kit on my other 175...

I need to remember to back the valve adjusters all the way out before I do this one though.  I'm pretty sure I nicked the exhaust valve with the tap on my other bike, which is why it doesn't have compression on that cylinder.  That would be the Dumb Current Owner... I was at TDC, but on the wrong revolution... Worst part is I can't even blame that one on alcohol...

Hey Spotty, would you like my Exploder? The transmission is sus, either needs a service or a replacement, but it's otherwise a good car, and you can have it for free, if you want it? Still registered and would probably pass a roadworthy, and has more grunt than you need. Let me know, if not, I'll have it towed away. ;D

Yeah Bill, I’ve had it since 2015, my son “borrowed” it for the last 4 years, and apart from annual oil changes, it hasn’t had much love, so the tranny is slipping, and I don’t want to keep paying the registration and insurance on something none of us are using, plus I’d like a small “ute” (sedan sized pickup) for collecting bikes and parts. The old Exploder has been a great car, but is taking up valuable real estate. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

My son is resurrecting his ‘02 Explorer thats been parked in my back yard for the past 8 years, I was always hoping he wouldn’t so I could steal the low mileage engine and tranny out for my red truck, but at least it’ll be out of my yard, so that’s a good thing. If mine was a manual I’d keep it, but the auto’s are a tad too complicated for me to rebuild. ;D

I have had both, I liked the Expidition better.

The Expy had a tyranny issue at around 230,000. Had a rebuild done for around 2400 bucks, wife totaled the car before we had a thousand miles on the new trans. Yes that did piss me off.

I'm pissed off because I don't know if an "Expy" is an Expedition or an Explorer? I don't know if I've ever seen an Expedition, I better google it. I quite like the Explorer, except it's fuel economy, which is awful. My new(ish) Aussie Built Ford Territory with it's little V6 turbo diesel gets approx twice the fuel mileage, even though they're pretty much the same size. ;D

We don't have many diesel powered cars here. Especially after the VW scandal, lots of diesel pickup's though. I still have my 93' Ford F-250 7.3l diesel 4x4 pickup. It's a 7000lb behemoth that should last the rest of my life.

Thanks guys, yep, not keen on spending all my money on fuel, I leased the Ford Territory, which is about the same size and weight as my Explorer when I was working in Canberra, 400 miles from home, and driving home every weekend. I could drive over 600 miles on less than 20 US gallons of diesel, and if was game, could happily sit on 100 miles an hour all day, such is modern turbo diesel technology. I only occasionally tow a light bike trailer, but will probably buy a “Ute” (sedan based pickup) for picking up bikes and parts, once I get rid of my Exploder. ;D

Expy = Expidition. Hope that calms you down Terry.😁 Mine was a 2000 with a 4.6 v8 gas motor and at best maaaaaaybe 20 mpg on the open road, but more like 18. My Suburban had a 350 gas v8 and couldn't pass a gas station. 40 gallon tank that the wife would run as close to "E" for excellent all the time. Back then it took a 100 dollar bill to get it even close to "F" for fine. I sure don't miss that pig!

Yeah mate, I was shocked when I found that my Exploder only got 19 MP (imperial 4.5 litre) gallon, on the highway. I did some googling to discover that the original testers here in Oz only got 19 MPG (country miles) when they were new, which is fcuking terrible! My son borrowed it for the last 4 years until the tranny started slipping/smoking, and he said that it cost him 2 tankfulls of fuel to drive from Melbourne to Sydney, so was cheaper to fly, and rent a hire car!

I do love big American vehicles, but I'll be retiring in the next few years, so I've bought the territory from the lease company, and I'm pretty sure it'll serve me well until I snuff it........ ;D

I just heard that Big Chief Yellow Belly has just tested positive for Covid 19. Oh well, as he says, "It is what it is"..... But what pisses me off today is rust holes in my Effing F2 gas tank, the weather is magnificent, the bike appears to be running well, but I can't ride it, or it'll dribble gas all over the hot engine and myself, and I might self immolate if I try to ride it until my gas tank liner kit arrives. Leaking gas tanks piss me off.......... ;D

Yeah mate, it's shocking news! I don't have a spare tank, so I can't do sh1t until the KBR kit arrives from QLD. My K0 rolling chassis is being collected on Monday or Tuesday from Brissie, it'll be interesting to see which arrives first........... ;D

Cut the rusty part of the rail, 2 spots, solder it up. Hang an emblem on it and ride it... it's not that bad..

Ha ha, it’s actually a bit worse than that boys, I can see potential for more pinholes when I look closer, so rather than just blob some solder in and hope it sticks to rusty steel that I can’t get to I’ll do it my way, as it’ll be me sitting on the side of the road with fuel weeping through my new paint if there are more holes than what you can see in a pic thousands of miles away....... ;D

What have you got to lose here, first all rust out, use a patch if you need to .. if it doesn't work ...you got what you have now.

I had one like that Terry, the PO had bondo'd over the emblem indent then went fishing for the hole with a 1/16" drill. He missed the emblem hole and found gas. Then bondo'd it again and painted it. The paint had a blister and the filler under it was black. I wire wheeled the filler out and tig brazed the hole. Much different than a rust hole though.

Thanks Frank, here's some pics I just took of my old F2 tank from the resto I did back in 2002. The tank that came with the bike was rotten with rust (F tanks are especially prone to rusting, especially if parked for a long time on the side stand with rotten fuel left in the tank) so I bought this tank from a guy in New York.

It had been repainted and looked good in the pics he sent me, but arrived with a hole in the box and a dent on the right hand side about the size of a US Postal Service steel capped boot. I contacted him, he said he'd put in a claim as I'd paid extra for insurance, which he probably did, because I never heard from him again......

Anyhoo, I started to scrape the paint out and discovered Bondo, so dug it out, and found two holes where the PO had used a sheet metal screw to pull a dent out, then just bondo'd over it. In hindsight, if it wasn't for the dent I'd probably have just sanded the old paint back and painted over it, and fuel would have immediately seeped through the bondo and ruined the paint.

I brazed up the holes, then had it blasted back to bare metal and painted it a nice candy red, bought some new decals, then used a 2 pack clear over the top, it looked like a million bucks. I didn't use a liner though, as it looked Ok. I wish I had. A few months later I walked out to the garage one day and could smell fuel, and saw that the beautiful paint had bubbled up, and fuel had dripped over the new black VHT engine enamel, ruining it too, and pooled on the concrete under the bike.

Old F2 rusty tank by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Old F2 rusty tank 1 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I could have possibly stripped the tank again and used a liner, then repainted it, but back then F tanks were in plentiful supply, and Tim Kasper (KGhost here) sold me a nice black tank from Texas that was totally rust free, so I bought more candy paint, more decals, and POR-15 tank liner kit, just for good measure, and that tank is probably still as good as new now, 18 years later.

Good F tanks are stupidly expensive now, a member has one for sale here for $350 USD, and I could only find 2 others on EBay USA for over $300 each, which looked far worse than mine. I'll use a tank liner kit to clean any interior rust and repair any other pinholes that I can't see, then use some JB Weld to fill the area right around the badge hole mounting plate, and sand it smooth, paint it, and move on. No rush, I've got plenty of other projects to keep me from being bored.......... ;D

Thanks Don, very true, a little rust pinhole on the outside can be like the surface of the moon on the inside. I'll definitely be using a tank liner kit. ;D

I realized the fuel pump on my 2001 Honda Civic had developed a leak when I noticed the trail of wet spots on the road behind the car when I parked it in front of the shop one day. Thankfully, Honda provided an inspection cover under the rear seat which allowed full access to the pump, unlike Toyota's I have owned. >:(
The top of the plastic pump housing had spiderweb cracks, and when the ignition was switched on, fuel oozed out from the cracks. A new pump/sender assembly was $400+, and the plastic housing wasn't available as a separate part. I fixed it using JB Water Weld putty which is supposed to be more resistant to fuel, and it's not so thin that it will flow through the holes in Terry's tank like regular JB Weld would. I did the repair on the pump 3+ years ago, and it's still holding, at least as far as I know, since I passed the car on to my nephew. ;D

Don't fix it if it ain't broke!
