Wow, very ambitious plan.  If you plan to sell down the road, why not paint the frame yourself and save the cost of PC. Your a Pro now, you can do it!

Beer is implied.  I will need an IV after hefting out that 180lbs monster tomorrow.

Thanks Steve!  You are too kind.  I am seriously thinking of going with a sliver bling metallic frame or candy orange with lots of sparkle.

For the tank and side covers I am still trying to decide.  Might leave some silver on the tank for a stripe.  I got a rough idea in my head.  Sleek, modern and retro all at the same time.

Found out the Unicorn triple is broken bummer.  Also a pic of the tank and side covers.  Wish I had tried painting sooner.  Lots of fun.

Not sure 3/4 cracked.  Got a name of a local welder not sure if he is good, but was recommended by a welding supply company.  Makes me wish I had a mig with argon.

Call Jim, I'd rather pay a little more (for shipping) and have it done right.

You got more guts than I do.  Not sure I would want to do switchbacks unless everything is tip top.  Thanks for the info I will be sure to send it off to get repaired.  Think I will try the laser welding.

More mud dabbers have they no respect for a man's motorcycle?  All in all I would say it's not a bad second day with everything broken down and bagged and tagged.  I also got out he steering stem races to boot!

Thanks to RobdaRob for his tip on leaving the one bolt in so I can lift the frame off the engine.  Also the CB650 cover I had leftover works great to protect the advance and props the engine up and inch or so making the tilt n' dump even easier.

No respect for anything man, I had them filling every hole on a used engine block, I pressure washed the crap out of that thing to get those nasty buggers out.

Yeah right.  No my next challenge is sorting through the tote tomorrow and see whats good and what has to be replaced.

After draining the oil I smelt a fair deal of gas in the oil.  I think this may be responsible for the white smoke I got with the gas in the oil making it pass the rings.  Maybe this engine does not need a rebuild after all?  Not head oil leak.  Only wet spot is near the sprocket and that could be the chain oilier?

The 1 long crack in the frame is another story.  There is a 2 inch long section where the frame is swollen up like a balloon.  A replacement piece going to have to be welded in.

After getting everything stripped down yesterday I had a little freakout when I saw a good sized crack about an inch long.  I gave it a harder look and saw something that resembled rheumatoid arthritis with the frame on the left side swollen up.  All I had was a business card that I picked up a welding supply company of a guy I had never met before.  As I was driving to the dinner to meet him it was pouring rain in sheets and all I can think of is how crazy is this?

I get to the dinner and he started showing me a bunch of pictures of other welding projects.  It looked good, but see no motorcycle stuff.  So I am thinking he is just another "trailer welder".  My dad had his trailer welded while function it was not pretty.

I asked him to humor me and he sliced a section of the doner frame and welded it up.  I then had him cut it out and he showed me that there was full penetration.  He said he would have it by Friday and I got a call after work and it was ready at 5PM!  I was super siked.

His name is Nate Bowman and he saved the day for me.  Thanks Nate!

I got my swing arm bushing out so I am staying on track so far.  I nicked inside how I am ok?

Here is a the video of the welding job and some pics of the swing arm.

Re: 1972 CB750 Restorathon Day 4 Can you say Kerker
« Reply #21 on: August 16, 2012, 08:49:30 PM »
Today was pretty busy, but I did manage to get some cleaning of parts done, engine, rims, and a Kerker exhaust.  Super excited when I stripped the paint and say a useable chrome muffler.  The header need some attention though.  I would like to get it ceramic coated, but this this is practically welded together.  Beating on to dissemble will only wreck it.

Engine cleaned up nicely as did the rims which only have a couple spots of surface rust.  There a a few rusted spoke which I am hoping to have replaced.

Everyone please give a warm welcome to Tmurt, the previous owner of the bike I am restoring.  And thank you for giving me the opportunity to bring your baby back to life.

From the moment I saw that 72 750 I knew there was something special about her.  I would not let some rusted chrome bits and pieces throw me for a loop.

Hondaman is something of a living legend here and responded to my thread about rebuilding the engine.  If you are interested there is some good back and conversation of the pros and cons of rebuilding vs not http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=111472.0.

Also under the Home link is the search function the one in the upper right hand corner does not work.
