small update. had been having issues with my carbs letting liquid fuel through the intakes into the engine causing terrible gas mileage, around 28mpg. rode a little ways away and have been borrowing my buddy Ben's cb750 carbs. they fired right up and got me back to my 38-45mpg range. swell. I honestly didn't feel like messing with my carbs anymore so I bought another set (75F to match the engine!) from a guy here. they came with some funk but nothing missing or broken, and the floats floated, and the slides slid. Rebuilt them :D

The finished carbs. Before and after. Soda blasted inside and out. Taken apart and sonic cleaned. Then gone through each hole/passageway with guitar strings and carb cleaner. All clear and clean. Cleaned and buffed slides. Polished tops and bowls, bodies masked and painted (no paint gets inside). Cured at 200 degrees for one hour. Then cleared with 2k clear. New fuel T o-rings, new honda 5.5mm lines and 3.5mm lines. Bench synced, just need to vacuum sync with my Morgan pro tune. These guys fired right up!

It had 38 slow jets and 90 mains, I changed those out for 40 slows and 110 mains to match my hm341 pipes. so far I am not getting any stuttering or popping anywhere, it seems to run well. will be checking plugs soon. I did have an issue last night where I was getting a hanging idle. it would either idle at 3500 after revving or back to 1000 when I pushed the throttle forward. with the engine OFF the carbs snapped shut very well.....a little odd. I had a spare new throttle pull cable and tried that first. nailed it! took care of the issue right away.

even though my OEM pull cable was only 1 year old it has worn out (the jarring from the wreck probably didnt help. it is a motion pro on there now, but I will be ordering another OEM cable because I like how it feels, and I am a sucker for OEM. Just thought I would share that little bit of info in case someone has the same problem

so now I just need to run a tank of as through and see if these carbs are leaking fuel like my originals were. hopefully not and I can return Ben's carbs and focus on bigger things! the engine build is on hold, as is the 78F, my dad's bike is taking full time and money at this point! thanks for reading

I just discovered the same issue wit my OEM cable when I was changing bars - top was frayed down to one wire! Just reordered OEM through JT Marks on Ebay for $32/cable. Cheaper than Bike Bandit

Funny you say that I'm having the same exact issue. Throttle snaps shut when bike is off, but when bike is on, I get a hanging idle only because the throttle is a bit stuck so I have to push it forward. Glad to know this is most likely my issue since I have the original push/pull cables I believe still on my bike. I'll order some new ones now that I know that may be the culprit.

Yes, very nice!  Your attention to detail is impressive.  Once my cafe project is on the road, the next step will to clean up the carbs and engine as you have done.
Also, +1 on OEM, I have a set of non-OEM cables on my project bike and they have seen no use on the road and have already shown signs of coming apart, I will always go OEM if it is available.... and +1 on JT Marks on Ebay, he is super responsive and his prices are reasonable and shipping is quick.

I have somehow missed this build thread until today.  Two hours and zero work later I am up to date.  Aside from the obvious of being impressed, here are few other thoughts:
  • Jumping into a build like this with virtually no experience takes balls.  Most people are too intimidated and never make the leap; hopefully you have inspired others to do it.
  • I must also applaud you for your perseverance in the face of numerous setbacks and obstacles.
  • This build thread shows clearly how strong this "community" is.  That so many offer help, guidance, parts, moral support, etc... is not only cool, it's also very powerful.
  • It is amazing how far you've come in just over a year in terms of knowledge and experience.  There is a distinct difference between your early posts in this thread and the recent ones.  Jumping right into the deep end really speeds up the learning.
Thank you for taking the extra time to do this detailed build thread.  I am confident you have inspired many to complete or start their project.  Enjoy the bike; you have earned it!

Cheers!

Thanks for the kind words guys. It really means a lot. I literally could not have done it without the knowledge and support from this forum. Today is actually Yolanda's birthday. This was the day of her maiden voyage and since then I've clocked 8000 miles on her. Would be more but she was broken for 2.5 months when I had my accident. Just wanted to say thank you to everyone and here's to many more years!

The Chef and Yolanda (sounds like the name for a Romantic Comedy) spotted on the SOHC4 Facebook page.  Is that a peace sign or a reversed Anglo "eff you"?  In serious touring mode.   8)

Chef, they look awesome.  Your work is meticulous.  I would love to send you mine.  I am disassembling a buddy's 550 as I speak for a rebuild (leaking o rings on fuel lines and rejetting) and know what a painstaking job that is.  The polishing adds such a nice finishing touch.
