Actually quite well.  Great turn in.  Holds the line.  Feels very nimble.  The rear shocks are 365mm, but still has a 95mm trail with the Cognito 35mm offset tree.  But I haven't pushed it hard yet.  If there issues, I think I can shorten the shocks or go back to the 13.35 in. IKons.  Then trail will be 101mm. But it looks more raked than it is.

It's not too scientific, but I just put the digital protractor on my orange 550 tank cover and got 0.1 degrees.  It has a stock stance..  The blue 550 with protractor in same position, it came in at 0.4 degrees.  The longer GSXR forks account for the almost stock stance.  I have to admit though, it does look pretty raked forward in the photos.

It's the shocks, I was just eye balling the same ones for my 750 with an extended swing arm. Did you consider the other set of ohlins on cognitos site without the gas chamber?

Yes, and I may switch these shocks over to my 750F build.  And get the reservoir-less ones for this 550.  I wouldn't mind lowering the rear a tad.  The chain doesn't rub on the swing arm, but it's close.

Hi All.  I took her out this morning for the first spirited shakedown since the rebuild.  I went up 78E, the mountain road from the west end of Santa Ysabel to Julian and back. Although it is Spring Break, no one was on the road at that time in the morning.  It was a clear 68 degrees.  Without sounding self-aggrandizing, I was generally super impressed with her performance.  Absolutely love the handling.  Point and go type steering characteristics and super grippy - better than I was expecting.  On some fast straights I was touching high 90s, but I was a little tentative over some uneven, rough patches of road and anticipated some head shake with front rake being only 22.5*.  I had the steering damper on the middle setting and could not feel it at all.  Nevertheless, I am not 100% comfortable with 22.5* even with a 35mm offset tree.  I may take off the 365mm shocks and get them shortened about 1/2 to 3/4 inch.

The bike pulls very strong in the upper RPM ranges, but had some engine staggering mid-range at 3200 to about 4000.  Overall, she is much faster than my 750F. Then on decal, there was some popping coming down from about 5500 RPMs.  I am not sure why I'm getting hesitation and popping in mid-range because the engine was not touched during her time off and this had not happened previously.  I may try raising the needles a notch or two, and perhaps try slightly turning in the air screws a bit to enrich it.  Any comments on this greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Kevin

About the 365 shocks, do you have problems with the chain rubbing the upper side of the swingarm with those?

Beautiful bike by the way! 👍

Hi Jim.  Thank you.
It's very close, but it isn't the stock swingarm so I don't know if it would otherwise.  It's a box arm by Denis Curtis.  I have about 3/4" of chain slack.  It's a 520 chain.  I will post a pic of where the chain is in relation to the swingarm when on the side stand.

You can see it's close on the counter sprocket side and there has been some contact on the ends of the white protective plate.  Note - In checking the stock swingarm on my orange 550, the CMR arm has a taller profile, hence slightly less chain clearance.

Well...  spent late afternoon and this evening de-racking the CR26s.  The unpredictable idle, the stumbling on acel and popping on decel has not resolved despite adding a hefty dose of Seafoam to the fuel.  I hate tearing apart and cleaning carbs but hate the hesitation, sputtering and lack of throttle response even more.  The jets weren't as bad as I thought, but the #3 pilot was fully clogged.  After letting all of the jets soak in clear solvent, a lot of residue was in the wash cup..the solvent turned murky, so I guess they need cleaning.  Some residue was in the bowls as well...not perfectly clean fuel.  After reinstall, it leaked a lot of fuel.  Loose line and a couple bowl drain plug screw caps not tightened all the way.  Started quite readily and idled evenly at 1100 after warm up just like I remember.  Can't wait to go on a tear in the morning to see if all is good again.  Cheers.

Jeff , what ever the baseline numbers were that you emailed me way back when for the CR26s, I think I only went up one size for the pilots.  I believe the jets are 45/115 or120...but not sure..  it's a pretty robust motor.

After the carb cleaning, I had a very disappointing test ride.  Although it idles very well, which I attribute to now having clean pilot jets, the stumbling, bogging and hesitation is actually worse.  Then it "catches" unexpectedly and takes off like a rocket, but only for a few seconds before bogging down again.  It is almost like one or two cylinders suddenly jump to life, then cut out again.  Back at the shop, all headers were hot, but the #2 and #3 not as hot as #1 and #4.

I pulled the plugs, and not too bad - nothing that causes me concern.  I also checked the Dyna 2000 to make sure I was on the correct advance curve program setting, which is No. 4.  So, now I am really stumped and frustrated.  I will pull the ignition cover to check the Dyna 2000 timing marks next.

Suggestions?

Cheers.

Hmmm,  I recall hearing You say it was running good last year?  Right?
If so, then I'm guessing all the settings should not need to be changed, and that only leaves something that could have been damaged in the tip-over or other changes that have been done since then?

Mike, definitely.  It's CA.  I was buying racing fuel at 5 gallons at a time, but it became a hassle.  And it seems the Dyna 2000 is working properly.  It sure seems like a fuel delivery issue, but I cleaned the crap out of the jets yesterday.

Side note - after I laid the bike down, I drained the fuel and flushed it out before my body guy pulled out the dent and had it repainted.  The fuel in the tank is fresh, but ethanol fuel was in the float bowls while sitting.  I would think though that amount of fuel would have evaporated leaving behind an ethanol residue.

I'm going to draw some tank fuel out in a clear jar to see if any particles come out.  Maybe the carbs got re-gunked on start up.  I'm planning on de-racking the carbs again to try to figure what is going on.

Well, I didn't de-rack the CR26s.  Just removed bowls and jets for an inspection first.  As it turns out, I really buggered up the previous cleaning.  It is almost too embarrassing to post. I should be lashed on Easter Sunday.  But first, I was wrong on the pilots.  They are 55s and the mains are 115s.

So, first, the excuse and back story.  The gravel driveway I washed out on is pretty bumpy and a 1/2 mile long.  So I think it happened on the way to the main highway, 78 East.  In addition, over the years I have learned to screw in jets barely more than finger tight and it was late when putting everything back together.  This is the second time with bikes I have had a jet work loose and fall into the bowl.

I found the pilot jet sitting at the bottom of bowl #3.  Yes, embarrassing, but relieved to find the problem.  But wait, then I removed bowl #2, and found that the jet had broken off where the threads start.  I remember it being slightly bent and I bent in back into shape ... I knew that is a big non-no, but with no spare and wanting to go for a rip the next morning, I screwed it back up.  I was expecting it to be a total b**** to get the threaded part out, but with a small awl up the center it screwed out very easily.

I already ordered 4 new 55 pilots so I have spares; and 4 new 120 mains.  I have wanted to try a size larger to compare anyway.  It had to have happened on the gravel driveway before reaching  the highway because when started it up it idled perfectly, and crawling along the gravel, it seemed great.  But when on the pavement, chug, chug vroom, chug, chug.  I will report back with good news hopefully after the new pilots are installed and tested.

Happy Easter.

Jets R Us, yes.  And in a few extra sizes. Stayed up late to install and tidy everything up.  On opening the petcock, there was a small leak at fuel inlet on carbs due to jostling about.  Will sort out in a bit and fire her up.  Fingers crossed.

Fired up on about 4th attempt.  I may have given too much fuel with CR choke circuit.  Went with 60 pilot jets.  I always thought the 55s were a bit lean at their top end as needles kick in.  We will see.  Going for a rip up the mountain in about an hour.  With the 60s, she seems happier at a 1300 to 1400 idle after warm up.

Well, overall I'm pleased.  Runs stll a wee bit rough until she powers above about 5500 rpm.  I can't tell the difference between the 55 pilots and the 60s.  It seems that similar 550 engine builds with CR26s use 65 pilots, but I live at 3200 ft elevation, so 60s may be better.  I really need to dyno her, but that will likely be near sea level.  95% of my riding is above  2000 ft.
