Lowered CB500/4 is slowly coming together......
« on: August 27, 2006, 08:33:50 PM »
Did some work this past week on my 72 CB500/4....been awhile since i've turned some wrenchs on it.

Painted a few motor pieces....and started to layout a pattern for building an alloy tank. Original plan was just to use the stock steel tank....but the dam thing is so rusted inside and none of the home remedy rust removal techniques have worked. I even bought some Kreem(along time ago) and just dont trust the stuff. Its gonna be easier and better to just build an alloy tank....in the shape I want.

Heres a pic as I closed down tonight:

   Hey Greg,

I was beginning to wonder if and when you'd have time to get to the old 500. I know you've
been pretty busy and all. It looks good to see the old 500 getting some special treatment. It's
looking good. Kinda anxious to see some in progress shots.

Looks allot like the Salinas boys tank.

Looks killer on that bike - as I am a huge fan of the Salinas boys bikes/style.
The were the inspiration for the 21'' wheel project, and my next build (it's a secret)

BINGO!!!

Thats very similar to the look i'm going for. Hopefully, the front of the tank will look similar......then i'm gonna have to widen the back of the tank to come back out to match the wide seat pan.

I've always liked the look of the Salina's Boys bikes.......something about that low slim speedway bike look!!

Agreed.  Can't wait to see the finished bike man.  The floor boards are an interesting touch.  I totally dig it.

yes that's the look I would go for too - small amounts of black lace and lolipop (popsicle???) in hand - any idea where I would find one like her  ;)

Okay......fabbed/hammered out some of the new alloy tank for the CB500.

The top is a little more squared then I was really wanting, but.....i'm really starting to like it more square. Seems the more a look at it...the more I like it. Still need to weld in the other side and form up a tunnel. Not bad progress for just a few hours in the garage tonight.

Enjoy the pics!!

...this next image makes the top of the tank look strange for some reason....

Greg, When I first saw where you were going with that tank, I wasn't sure but, after seeing it taking shape it really kinda grows on you. I especially like the look from the top and the way it comes down to the seat. I shoulda known that you'd pull it off and with a totally different look to boot. Way to go Greg. ;D

I think a sidecover the same shape as the 550F might complement the lines more than the K style, or ideally none at all with the battery/electronics moved into the hump.

Thanks Bill!!

These pics dont really show the overall shape of the tank very well. There is a nice corner radius around the top......the bead of weld makes it hard to see. I'm trying to kind of have that speedway bike tank look(from the side profile)....but bigger....dont know how the end result will look...hopefully decent.

Yeah.....i'm still undecided on the side covers. I've looked at the under the hump thing......just not enough room. Well see where it goes???

Keep the sidecovers and ditch the tank !

I didnt want to say anything , but maybe my opinion will make you see it in a differnet light ?
I just think that the tank doesnt flow with the rest of the bike , and the look you are going after.

Maybe if you made the top and side flow more togehter, and look less "boxy" ?

I mean, what the hell do I know ?
I couldnt build a tank if my life was on the line.

Just my opinion - and please take it as that, as opinion...

Dude.....been waiting to hear your opinion, as I think we have similar taste when it comes to these bikes.

Actually.....been sitting here at work looking at these pics for the last few hours and I may just have to grind down the welds tonight and try and reshape it a little more......so its not so "boxy". My first thougth last night, when I welded it up......was just that. Then my other half came out and said she loved it like that.....what the hell do women know?? ;D

Keep you guys updated.....

Greg ,

I am glad that you appreciate my honest opinion.
You are a stand up guy who has a great talent , as your bikes show..

I just think the tank looks like three pieces of cardboard taped together and
spraypainted silver. That was the 1st thing that popped in my head when I saw it. I have seen your other tanks
that you have made, and I know you can make a wicked / stylish / one off tank for this bike (better than the first one).

If all else fails, go spend $350 and buy the Salinas boys tank and make it fit your scoot  ;D
And whats the big deal with the sidecovers on this thing , whats wrong with them ???

           Greg,

Personally, I think you've done just what it needed. IMHO I think you've pulled it together.

tank 2 is much better.  more refined.  looks like what you wanted tank 1 to be.  very nice.

still down on the side covers.

oh, and get some little hottie to sit on it and look demure for the next photos.
they really seem to jazz it up.

Wow! the tank looks much better.

I only have 2 suggestions.
1. Like most I agree with ditching the stock side covers.
2. The seat is awesome! But... I would contour the sides of the pan a bit. When looking at the bike from the rear, the sides of the seat pan are the only straight lines on the bike. I know it seems a bit nit-picky but with all of the custom work you have put in so far the little details will make the difference between a pretty cool custom and an absolute jaw dropper.

Then again WTH do I know... I'm just a newbie here.  ;D
