March April 2011

It's warming up and my unheated garage is a bit tolerable. The carbs... what didn't they get. Fortunately they were pretty clean as they were running pretty good the fall of 2010.
These got all genuine honda parts as follows. Gasket set, float valve set, needle jets, jet needles, slow and main jets, rubber o rings... I'm forgetting something.

April May June 2011- wow! time got away on me.
Not many pictures showing the detail I'm afraid.  The filter box I drilled per Hondaman and used a K&N filter. I found a GL1000 brake master and completely rebuilt it in anticipation of a dual disc.
I ordered Cycle X fork tubes and filled them with new Progressive springs and new fork seals plus new top tube caps.  New progressive springs as well.
New wiring harness from Partsnmore.

Now we cooking with gas... or whatever that expression is.  :P

I buggered the bearing retainer thread on the rear lester....careless, in a rush... I dont know. I knew better.  I later found a machinist to fix that but in the mean time, I threw the old spokes on to keep the momentum.

June 2011

This is where I ended up at this time. No paint. Planned a summer of shake down runs. The first start up went very well. I had bench sync'd the carbs, set the valves. It fired right up and came down to a respectible 1000 rpm idle. I was surprised how well that went.

Maiden Voyage.

I sorta slammed the brakes on this project after the end of the summer of 2011.  I got it to run very well and I was surprised at it's power. Pleased as well.  Lots of honks and thumbs up from people. Although That primer state looked terrible but I also wasn't happy with the BCR look. No offense to those that love this cafe style but I was waffling on it.
The engine oil consumption was unexpected. It smogged mosquitoes and my neighbors. Plenty of blue smoke but no loss of performance.
I became hesitant to spend any cash on a paint job so I sat back and gave it time to sink in.  Which way will I go.....

...and that brings me to TODAY!!!. I'm done showing historical pictures.  I just realized some of my original parts are missing...  fork ears, handle bars, rear grab bar with signal lights, chain guard.... so far that's all that's missing I hope.... I can't imagine where but it's been two years since I seen that stuff.. I had a temporary split with my wife so I wonder...
Mostly OK though. I'm replacing anything chrome anyways. Need to find a good used chain guard.  I hope to begin a top end tear down and get the head and cylinder sent off. More later.

Inside my garage.  Lets get started shall we. Have a top end to tear apart today.

This helped bring the temp up to 10C or 50F.but it's unusually warm here right now. Runs on kerosene.

Lotsa carbon

Mission accomplished. Next those studs come out. The plan is to ship the head off for a rebuild,  bore to 836 and reverse everything I did today.

Am I this lucky to have the gaskets come off this easily... :o

Lesson learned today. If you organize your photobucket photos after you posted photos in a build thread, those photos will disappear from the forum build thread.
Things to do
1.Package and ship the head and cylinder- hopefully to MRieck. Just waiting to hear back from him.
2.Have the frame sandblasted, fit the frame kit from 754. Weld it in.
3. Repair seat hinges that I took a grinder to. Yes in my cafe quest, I ground them off to accommodate the BCR seat.  :(  Not yet sure how im going to do this but I'll post my solution.
4. Find a powder coater.
Im sure I've miscellaneous things to do but I also have to get some home renos finished that I started this past summer.  My plate is full. Stay tuned for updates, however slow they may be.

There are various ways to mount an aftermarket seat.  The more complicated method is to adapt it to the stock hinges to allow it to open and close.  Another method is to weld flat bar onto the frame rails and screw the seat directly into the flat bar.  Some builders fasten a pan instead of flat bar and mount the seat similarly.  Alternatively, FrankenFrankenstuff offers circular rubber mounts that you place on the frame rails and screw into place.  In doing so, you create 4 mounting points to screw your seat into -- and a rubber buffer between the seat and the frame to allow some "give."

I am sure there are a host of other methods, as well.

I seen Franken's rubber mounts. Looks great!!. In my case, I'm looking at putting my bike back to stock and wanting to put the Honda factory seat back on except that's the problem.... I've ground the hinge brackets off the frame back in 2011.  I've another frame that's bent supposedly, (I cant see a bend) that I could cut the brackets off and weld onto my good frame. I want to ensure this other frame is in fact junk before I cut it up.

Mike is THE MAN.  He'll go as far as you want, and he has a wealth of knowledge.  On top of that, he's one cool guy (hey, he's got an RC51, too!!)

You can go anywhere from Stage one to WHOLE HOG, like Doctor D did -- Stage 4 (kind of like turning the volume up to 11): a Stage 3 PLUS Kibblewhite CB750 5mm valve conversion kit (34mm intake/28mm exhaust valves, guides, seals, springs, Ti retainers, spring bases and lash caps).

So my head and cylinder hit the post office en-route to MRieck.  Once Mike gives my options, I'll post what I decided to do. Stage 2 port work for sure, hotter cam, and possibly bigger valves. I had picked up those 65mm pistons from ebay seller cruzinimage back in 2011 and I decided to use them now. Will be close to stock, or stock compression and am told will work out ok.

In the mean time, I Will look for a local welder and powder coater for my frame and parts.  I've also some home reno's like I mentioned. I find if I give my wife about 1 week of reno's, It buys me about 2 weeks in the garage.... he hehehehe.  ;D

Mail man brought me a big O' box of Genuine Honda Parts

Can't see real well but, the obvious is a New OEM front fender, and less obvious are a new throttle tube, set of mirrors, points cover, and a set of fork ear reflectors

Yup.... made in Japan.
