I was feeling run/ground down the other day so I decided to take the back way home. I opened the sun roof and rolled down the windows on my Mini Cooper and went through some pretty, rural countryside. (My only bike is STILL in pieces in my shed so no help there.) As I admired the scenery and let my head clear, it hit me, what I would most like to do is be a gentleman farmer. Have a few chickens, grow a few vegetables and herbs, etc. and basically putter around all day. I googled gentleman farmer to see what I need to do and the definition is "A man of independent means who farms chiefly for pleasure rather than income." So now all I have to do is become a man of independent means!

Just have to say to dhall57....I appreciate the honesty that created this thread, and I thank you for it.

I believe you inadvertantly gave people a place to be afraid and unsure. As "men" we are not supposed to feel that way. You are supposed to go to work, pay the mortgage, provide food and shelter for your family. That's it, that's all. Many of you are a few years older than I am so were even more influenced by the generation before you. "Men" smoked cigars and pipes and drank beer and worked on the family car. They did not stand around the barbeque with their buddies and discuss things like "fulfillment" or "feelings" or "wanting more out of life". I know the only person I have ever talked to about this, before posting on here, was my wife. I am grateful for her support and feel compassion for those who don't have that in their lives.

This is the start of something, an evolution of sorts.....and I am humbled and excited to be a part of it.

Hey Operator we might have discussed fulfillment around the BBQ but not within their hearing range, case in point there's 3 of us that were buddies at RCAF St Comox 50 years ago and we had gotten together in Listowel for lunch and to catch up with aches and pains, grandchildren etc any how we were walking out down the street it was warm and this young thing with a magnificent bum went past and the guy that has been married the longest stopped in the middle of the intersection and stared after her then as he started up again said Old, Bill, old, but not dead, I'm pretty sure if his wife whom he loves dearly had been there he wouldn't have done that so for us new age may mean something different. Have a good one.

I'm 53 and feeling the same way lately (in a rut). I think it's just the winter blues though. I'm lucky to have served 23 years in the military, okay, the Coast Guard, but it's still and armed force (and more  ;D), so I've one pension already. I've been working for the same outfit as a civilian employee since I retired from active duty in 2002. It's been pretty much the same old grind ever since. But I like to think my job pays for my motorcycle habit and my alimony - LOL. The alimony will stop soon though and I should have enough time to retire in about 7 years so I'm just hanging in there, trying to keep the stress to a minimum. I choose my battles carefully and just let the others do their thing until I feel that I have to speak up. But most of the time I just shake my head and laugh silently.

Look for thrills in unexpected places.  Had to go to work today at my old company and will be there for a next week or so.  Nothing too exciting there but Tuesday evening in the sky the planet Mars reached opposition and was the brightest it has been in seven years.  Venus was up and shinning bright too.  I spent an hour out on the deck just watching the sky and contemplating the vastness of the universe.  Made getting up that morning all worthwhile and it was a great day to be alive. :)

Bill....I laughed when I saw this...there our many things that change in our military...that's not one of them.

And Srust58.....I looked for Mars too...couldn't see it through the fog and snow....but I still knew it was there ;). Glad you had the opportunity to enjoy it and share it here.

This thread has got quite a bit of attention and it seems alot of us are kind of in the same situation and we aren't really alone in feeling this way. It's good we can give each other support here. I know the comments made here has helped me. The thrill is still not there but I'm trying to handle it and deal with it a little better.

I suppose guys that the thing I was trying to say about the magnificent bum was no matter how old or decrepit and my buddy who commented on the bum and not being dead had/has Non Tropical Sprue, Emphysema, Diabetes and a few other minor complaints and was 70 at the time still had a joy for life and good looking young things that made you think no matter how much of a grind it is, there are things to be celebrated, laughed at, grasped, case in point I've got another DVT and am on blood thinners, water pills, and something that keep my heart from over speeding, which I'm pretty sure caused the DVT ( when you heart hits a certain rpm it doesn't maintain pressure) went for a scan, the young tech was friendly, good looking and she did the scan without much hassle and then she said OK you can put your pants back on but don't go away, so I says the clot hasn't gone away she said no, you wait out in the waiting room I want to talk to my doctor ahh says I, she said I'll call the doctor right away so pants on out into the waiting room, couple of minutes later she comes out and says you can go home provisionally, oh says I, she said but I want you to get hold of your doctor right away and if not this afternoon then first thing in the morning make sure! Off I goes thinking, #$%* I've just picked a couple of basket case ct 90s now what #$%* am I going to do, #$%* I better get working on the house to finish it etc, get home phones the doc and waits until he gets back to me about an hour later, he says good news and bad which first, I said bad, he says the clot hasn't gone he said but the good news is it's not bigger, the relief I felt was great, the grandson is coming up this weekend so there will be a chance for a giggle or too, so life's not bad got to seize it while I can and the same for the rest of you slackers, if it's a grind find some thing else or put up with it and develop other interests. Enough of a rant for the moment and I'll resume the quest for the 18-50 year old red head with the great bod and good legs that has a yen for an evil old man or go finish cleaning up the house.

Bill...that is certainly hitting the nail on the head now isn't it?

And to dhall57. I think a lot of us needed this thread more than we ever thought we did. I know I did.

Thanks Gentlemen.

you know what I do when I feel like I'm wasting away life, I try to make people laugh and goof on as much stuff as I can. Then I act like #$%* is super important to the point that folks cant tell if I am really totally serious and into the work or if I am mocking everything and myself. It makes me feel better even if it doesn't pay any better, and sometimes it forces more free time on me than I want but in the end its always worth the risk.

That's a beautiful pic Steve, the only thing that spoils it of course is that fugly K8, can you photoshop it out and insert your beautiful Z1 instead? Anyway, after rain for the last few days the sun's shining, so I think I'll take my big black 'Wang for a ride, that always brings the thrill back for me. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"
