Yeah, I was pleased to see the cam was well oiled and things were nice and clean. The pistons however were caked with deposits, and oil was even in the valve relief of #1. My head is in good hands now ;) wait that sounded weird.

I wonder if better gas or detergent gas helps keep deposits at bay.

Or maybe it was from oil leaking down into the chambers? Unfortunately I have nothing to compare it to.

Almost 6,000.  And everything else looks/checks out fine too. Just the worn valve guides. If I didn't want to replace that crank seal I wouldn't even need to split cases, but might as well. Got new rings, and going to do a quick hone before I set the gaps and re-install. I really didn't want to do all this, but trying to make the best of it.

Made a stupid "OOPS" today. I was splitting the cases to replace the crank seal. I have the engine on my stand, and when I flipped it over my brace that I made to hold the front wasn't locked in place. It slid out as soon as I removed the rod from the back of the lower case holding it to the stand. The top case swung down and I bent two of the Kibblewhite HD studs! Damnit! Thats what I get for not checking my equipment. :( I'll go take a picture when I feel less depressed!

Yeah, I would at least bend that brake rod back. I'm not even thinking about fixing these, just bucked up and ordered new ones.

Yeah, that's why I'm just getting new ones. Don't trust those two now after that force. I'm almost ready to mate the cases. Everything is all cleaned up, new Honda seals. I'm just gonna take a break for the night. I'll take a pic of the bent studs after the motor is upright again.

your leak issues are making me feel a little queasy as I am mid engine build, but there are great bits of into here. Thanks for sharing all of these steps. Ill be checking the direction of my seals VERY carefully.

Thanks! Nothing to be queasy about, just learn from my mistakes. Use Honda seals when possible, and put them in correctly haha.

I see that Kibbles makes head studs for the 750, is APE the only provider for HD studs for 550s? if not, who is best?

also, your studs look so much beefier than the toothpicks in my 550..

If APE makes studs for your motor, go with it. They are high quality. Just follow the instructions (and I prefer using the installer tool as well. Makes it easier)

I'm not aware of any manufacturer of aftermarket HD studs for the 550 other than APE, but there are no complaints about the APE studs, so why bother?
