Cam wear/damage?
« on: November 10, 2014, 05:00:28 PM »
I got a CB750 cam with some parts I bought, and I was wondering about the edges of these lobes. I have never seen this before, but then again I haven't seen a lot of cams.
The right edges of these lobes are raised up (or middle ground down? Depending how you look at it) with no other unusual looking wear. All 4 on this side of cam are like this, and all 4 on other side are completely smooth. Lift is same as other respective intake/exhaust lobes. Marking on the cam is "R3." Look like damage? Or an area not ground from casting?

The way I see it that cam is worn
...worn out. That ridge where the rocker didn't ride, should never show. There should never be that much wear to the lobe that that ridge would appear.

Ha, good one. Probably. I'd suspect some beginning wear on the rockers slap faces should be showing, too.

Cam look bluish too. Running hot?
As said many times.... can be caused by the newer type of oils and/or blocked oil lines.

My old OEM cam that was used 65.000kms look new compared with this one. I did not change oil that often and the quality of the oil (often bubbling foam in the oil tank) was not good either which I noticed when the piston rings fell out in pieces when removing the cylinders 1983.

Dave acquired the cam in a parts-lot.  Hopefully the other parts have some value...........this particular part used to qualify as 'land-fill' material...................but now we just re-cycle them to others.

Good catch, Dave.  I would think the cam-tower and rockers associated with that cam are also worn beyond use.

Correct, I got this with other parts that I was looking for. No other associated motor parts with this to post pics of. I just wanted to know if it would be of any use in the future, but as I thought its trash. Using a Webcam on my current project.

You could slide it under the seat of your car for possible protection against road rage.

Can be used as an exchange core for one of the hard weld megacycle cams.

Very good idea. I carry a concealed firearm, but honestly might freak someone out more by swinging a cam around!

Re-Grind...........Maybe...........if the journals are good.............but your looking at a few hundred bucks plus shipping............and you can usually buy for less (used or Cycle-X) if you are not looking for max-performance.
