Time to Buy Tires
« on: May 16, 2015, 07:28:27 PM »
What's the best vintage look tire out there for my 1976 CB750K build?

I have Metzler Lazertecs on my 1978 CB750F and love them, and they come in the original sizes, 3.25X19 front and 4.00X18 rear.

But they look too modern for the '76.

Thoughts on a decent original looking set in those values? I looked at Duros... cheap but any good?

My bike came with a new Dunlop on the front. I can't remember the model off the top of my head by I can remember that it's only rated for 93 mph. It's a nice looking vintage tread tire. Last year I needed a new rear and went with the Dunlop TT100 and am very happy with it.

I absolutely love the look of my Dunlop K70's on my bike. They have an almost blocky tread pattern that looks cool and performs excellent.

The so-called Conti Twins were my favorite for decades. But I believe that they are now manufactured in China, not in Germany anymore, and heard that quality suffered greatly. Anyhow, they come in very limited sizes these days--unlike back in the 70s. I am using Bridgestone BT45 now.

I have run Duro and found the rear to wear out quite quickly on my 750. When I bought some at the time a front and rear were around $75.00 for the pair so at least a reasonable price first pair of new shoes for some bikes that had not been rode in years.

pretty good tire despite the neanderthal tread pattern, but if you ride on grooved pavement , they can be downright terrifying

Stev-o,

In answer to your question regarding country of origin of the Conti twins tires.
I just checked mine.  They were purchased last July (7/17/2014) from Motorcycle Superstore.
They are stamped "Made in Korea" on both tires.

Hope this helps,

Charlie

Hey Charlie....thanks for the info although it is a little disappointing. Was hoping they were still made in Germany.

When I looked at mine, I was a little disappointed myself.  :(
After I get my old gal up and running we'll see how they perform.
Don't know what I'll do if they don't perform the way I remember.
Maybe Metzler?  Or the BT45's?  Just don't know.

Chewey,

That was funny.  Almost spit my popcorn!  :)  :)
And then I started wondering how to mount up the Disc for the Brake.  LOL

Pretty sure that type of wheel needs drum brakes!  ;)

Metzeler ME 77 look old and still in production, ME11 front.

I have Lasertecs, front and rear 110/90-19  120/90-18. My rear tire is too soft when it has less than 3000km and 3mm left. I doubt it will last 5000km in total. I used Metzeler ME99 back in the 80's that did around 8000kms. Sportversion was soft like the Lasertec today and max 5000km's as I heard from a biker friend that had tested it.

I'll try Dunlop Arrowmax Streetsmart next time. New pattern when my bike is not a purist CB750 in OEM style.

Heidenau makes tires that have the old patterns, but modern materials. I have them on the CB550K and they suck up a lot of bumps and stick like glue.

Lasting pretty good too, 7K miles and less than half the way through the tread I would estimate.

Watch out as to similar tread patterns that like to follow the grooves in highway pavement.  They can give you a wicked wobble at higher speed.
