1976 CB750K - Swapping in a 1975 GL1000 Front End
« on: May 16, 2015, 08:28:47 PM »
I've looked, and despite a lot of good information, I can't seem to find a definitive, (read: simple) description of what's involved and/or parts required for this swap.

I have a chance to buy a complete 1975 GL1000 front end for a reasonable price...

Try plugging site:forums.sohc4.net into google to search or, if you're using Chrome grab this extension

I took some notes a while back - it's a bolt on assuming it's a K. Someone else can speak to the F probably but I don't think there's much difference at the stem.

Edit: Just took a look at the Allballs site for a 78 SuperSport and the bearing kit is the same K and F

It is an extremely simple swap and bolt on mod.

It uses the same size head bearings.  You simply use the entire front end (forks, trees, brakes and calipers).  An added bonus of using the GL front wheel is that the rim is aluminum and much lighter.

Great information and much appreciated. The 75 GL complete front end I found even has a nice looking tire!

I can likely get the rear rim as well including the tire that matches the front, but I believe it's a 17" vs the stock 18".

It would be nice rim to put on for appearance sake, it's lighter and matches the front high shouldered aluminum rim. I can likely simply re-lace it to my '76 CB750K rear hub.

Three questions:

a) the spokes look thicker on the GL rim than on the K, or is that just my imagination?
b) does anyone know which spokes to buy to re-lace the rear 17" GL rim to the '76 K hub?
c) will the geometry/steering be adversely affected by going with a rear 17" rim vs the stock 18"?

Ahhh! So just use the spokes from the GL rim to lace it to the K rear hub? The '75 K rear drum hub has the same diameter and spacing as the '75 GL rear shaft drive hub? That's way too simple...

I'll have to be careful taking it apart vs my angle grinder spoke cutting method. The GL spokes seem to be in nice condition on both front and rear so I can likely reuse them.
