Danny does that scooter come with a title? Need a MC license to drive it? I may be interested in buying for the right price of course for my oldest. Let me know.

Momma, don't let your babies grow up to ride scooters..............  (with apologies to Waylon Jennings) ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

LOL, he is 15 and we do a school choice for him due to wrestling. We live 1 block away from the HS he should attend but we drive him across the city to the one he attends. If he has a scooter it would save time for us in the Am with the 3 other kids.

I don't plan to keep either of them. But the scooter is driving me nuts. I just cannot get it to start and now I am thinking I may not have any compression and may have to pull the head to take a look. It certainly isn't turning into the easy flip I was expecting.

I know, but there is a strong market for old Harley's, even in the unknown condition mine is in. There is basically zero market for "project" late model Japanese scooters. So the Yamaha gets the attention right now.

Ha ha, fair enough mate, I shouldn't be so nasty about scooters as I taught myself to ride on my sisters Honda C50 when I was 8 or 9, but over here we have this "Scooter Culture" folks (much like the "Cafe Racer" and "Steampunk" culture) who for some reason seem to think they're just a little bit better than real motorcyclists. I reckon you should start him the right way and buy him that shovel! ;D

My son was riding 750's before he was 18   :o    ;D

It's hard to believe, but I went to school with a kid who conned his father into buying him a CB750 when he was only thirteen or fourteen! I was raised in a small country town and quite a few farm kids bought new 750's or Z1's (when farmers were making good money) at age 16 and sneaked across the border into South Australia to get their licenses.

Mick Mathes was the son of a German immigrant who's English wasn't too good, and Mick said that his dad thought he was ordering a new XL250 to replace Mick's XR75, but Mick was doing the translating, so Helmut (his dad) was none the wiser until a shiney new silver K2 arrived.

I left that school a year or two later, and then joined the army, but next time I saw Mick was in 1979 or 1980 when he was riding a shiney new silver CBX, at age 19 or 20. Lucky bugger........... ;D

Starting the wee ones on dirt bikes when they are young is the key to making them confident on the road when they are able, with proper supervision, to make the transition to the road. He was not going solo at that age that's for sure. Pass Dad and your done. Now that he is 27 I had a little bit of a hard time keeping up with him in some twisties a couple weekends ago when he was doing my Kaw 900  ;D

Yep, I had dirt bikes right up until I joined the Army, then I bought my new (but discontinued) CB750F0. One of the reasons why I don't like them much is because I was used to using the back brake on dirt bikes, which was still OK on "K" series CB750's, but the "F" had the worst rear brake you could put on a bike, twice as powerful as the front brake, and at leat twice I locked up that back wheel in emergency braking situations, and threw the big ugly bastard (and my bike) down the road............. ;D

Not to hijack the thread but any pics of you in the Army Terry? When I was stationed in Washington I would see soldiers from all over the world. The Aussies and Brits we frequent the base.

G'Day mate, I have a few pics on my old hard drive but it's full of viruses, so I don't have anything I can post right now. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Pulled the Harley out of the side garage today to find out if the engine is free or not.

I pulled the primary cover and everything looks really good. I put the big wrench on the crank nut and the engine turned over easily. I also pulled the clutch and took a look at the plates, they seem to be in very good shape.

I am thinking that this may be all the work I am going to do. Getting it running is more work than I am interested in doing given that I don't plan to restore it.

A couple grand I think.

An experienced Harley guy could probably have a runner without very much effort. But the frame needs blasting and painting, the aluminum on the cases is heavily oxidized, the chrome is not in very good shape, and the wheels are shot.

I don't actually think that a lot of money will need to be spent because I think the engine is solid, it just needs a lot of TLC after spending the past 25+ years buried under junk in the PO's garage.

I have way too many

More work on the Shovelhead today. I tested the starter and it turned over, so it appears to be good. I cleaned it up and have it partially installed, I am going to finish it up tomorrow.

I washed and cleaned it up too. It looks much better. I was cleaning up the outer primary cover I pulled yesterday and found some DPO repairs. Apparently it was dropped on its left side and the case under the clutch cover was dented in a cracked. Some PO (I am not sure if it was the guy I bought it from or the guy who stole it from him and modified it) simply smeared some silicone over the crack to seal it.

I am going to JB Weld it on the inside to seal it up and let a future owner deal with it. A quick check on eBay shows that chrome replacement coveres are pretty cheap, under $200 new and there are a couple of used ones for under $100.

I also pulled the rear caliper (the bike rolls SO much easier now), split it open and cleaned it. It has the strangest looking caliper piston I have ever seen. I didn't take a picture, but I will steal one from the internet.

Lastly I installed a new ignition switch since it didn't come with a key. Oh, and I spent $90 on the Harbour Freight motorcycle jack.

I will say am getting kind of fond of this bike and am seriously considering trying to get it to run before I let it go. It has come apart so easily, I even was able to free up the bleeder screw on the rear caliper. The thing is stupid small (1/4" wrench) and I was sure it would break. But a little heat and some oil and it came out. It just seems like it wants me to fix it.

Sometimes its just meant to be  ;)  I agree with Terry.  At least get it running then decide what you want to do with it.  Bikes that cooperate when you work on them always find a soft spot in my heart.
