Fuel hose size??
« on: May 19, 2015, 09:42:06 PM »
I tried to search the forum for the answer but came up short. What is the actual fuel hose size you guys are using? I got a 1/4 in hose that seems to fit but Hondaman said it would probably leak. He gave me some 5mm hose (I think that's what he said) and said it was stock. That hose was so crazy tight I could barely get it on but I did.  Then when I tried to pull it off the petcock I had to pull with all my might and it broke the petcock off.

Anyone else using 1/4 in? Seems like that is what all the online places sell.

OEM hose is 5.5mm. It's a tight fit for sure.

The trick to rubber lines is to not just pull on them, that just causes them to grip down harder on the thing you're trying to remove them from.  Instead push from the ends so that the hose expands from the pressure instead of stretching and contracting.

I use USA made Gates Barricade  6mm ID, 13mm OD
Fits really nice on the petcock nipples (old dual version). Withstand modern fuels too.
But my carbs have 8mm connections so I have adaptors and use Gates Barricade fuel hose 7.9mm ID too.

Do not buy crappy cheap hose that will not cope with the fuel. I have done that mistake earlier this year.

Just go OEM 5.5mm if you can. After all, it was made for these bikes. Makes taking lines off super easy. Used to have crappy 1/4" and in the end I had to use a heat gun to get it off, so dumb.

definitely tried that.  it was not budging.  crazy tight.

does self clamping mean you don't need to add an external clamp?

6mm sounds like a good option.   I feel like taking off a tank is pretty common process and it shouldn't that difficult.  However, I have zero interest in gas spilling on my newly painted engine.  I went thorough already and had to do some re-painting.

shouldn't the 1/4in fit way more loose than the 5.5mm?

also, do you need clamps with the 5.5mm hose?  doesn't seem like you would.  If you do, where do I find those?  All I see is 1/4 or 3/16 online.

Remember that ethanol in the fuel was not actual back in the days. That's a new problem like the absence of zinc in the oil.
I should never trust the old type of hose when there are ethanol and other chemicals in the fuel.

I use Honda 5.5mm with no clamps. Works great. I bought the correct Honda 'clamps' -- those circle clip things -- for both fuel tap and carbs, but never used them. Honda line is not expensive from local shop, it's pliable and it fits (and removes) as it should. I bought it by the foot from my local shop.

Clamps are not needed. Honda uses the minimalist single wire wrap clamp. We've had buyers specials here before, where one member would buy a bunch from here, https://www.alssnowmobile.com/PRODUCTPARTS.ASPX?pn_deptid=304  to mitigate the shipping then parse it out to members.

But 5.5mm is the key.

I ordered a new 5.5mm Honda line from 4 into 1.  I also ordered a 3/16 in hose to compare.  both were pretty cheap.  the 3/16 hose is Helix Polyurethane and claims to provide "superior abrasions and kink, tear, oxidation and chemical resistance. Melting temp 370f Operating temp -75f to 155f This fuel line will not get hard, stays flexible."

I also got the Helix type in clear.  I like the idea of having a clear fuel line but if the fit isn't good i'll just stick to the 5.5mm Honda one.

I have not have long term luck with the polyurethane line. It tends to get hard. It has not been a big issue since I swapped it out with the fuel filter. The Tygon seems better, but either will be fine. I gave up on the thick corded rubber hose. There is no pressure, so not need for cord.

the problem I found, at least for the 550 is aftermarket fuel line is thicker outside diameter and can be a bear to fit through the carb bracket. But other than that i use it. I buy it from NAPA. I use clamps too.
