Road quiz, for those of you who may be bored
« on: October 19, 2006, 11:23:15 AM »
Statistically, 1 in 11 cannot get more than 70% right in this quiz. I assume that this is a Canadian quiz, but most of the questions/sign should pertain to the US as well.

I scored 70%  :-\   In my defence:  all the signs are very different to Europe.     But is this really how easy your written drivers test is?  In my country you get 50 really hard questions, and if you have 6 or more wrong you fail. 58% fail their first exam here.... :P

Depends on whether you're facing uphill or downhill, and whether there is a raised kerb beside the road.

the reason for wheels turned in is so you don't slide into traffic, right?

when parked uphill, wheels turned in, if you slide, the car's rear will goto the curb.
when parked downhill, wheels turned in, if you slide, the car's front will goto the curb.

am i missing something there?

It will, but not before the car rolls several feet and the front swings out into traffic. If your wheels are turned out, the back of the front tire will hit the curb sooner. Of course, I'm just a nerd/dweeb/dork/neomaxizoomdweebie, so what do I know?  ;D

100% and I'm color blind !!!!!!! yellow/orange what -ever???  I know what color they are supposed to be.

The SanFansisco post is funny. My sister lives on a steep street there.
I was doing some work on my bike there in front of her house last summer, dropped my socket wrench on the ground and had to walk 300 yards DOWN the hill to retrieve it.  ::)  I swear its a 45 degree+incline ;D

#7 and #13 are nutty.

7. When waiting to make a left turn, you should give the right-of-way to vehicles coming from the opposite direction: (Select one)

a. Until at least two vehicles have passed
b. Until dangerously close cars have passed
c. Until all of the cars have passed

They say "C" is right, but in the real world I would be dead and rotted behind the wheel if I waited for "all of the cars" to pass.
"B" is correct.

13. A pedestrian crossing at the corner has the right-of-way: (Select one)

a. At marked crosswalks only
b. At marked or unmarked crosswalks
c. Only at intersections controlled by signals, lights, or stop signs

"B", supposedly correct, makes no sense. What is an "unmarked crosswalk"?
This is at corners only, as per the question. A pedestrian has right-of-way at a stop sign corner only when crossing across the street with the stop sign. At a traffic light controlled corner, only on a green light or pedestrian "walk" signal.
At an uncontrolled corner (pretty rare around here) I think a prudent pedestrian would not depnd on having "right of way" regardless of the rules.
"C" has to be right.

So I got 100% right, even though these bozos only scored me at 90%. And anyone who actually got a 100% score... you got 2 answers WRONG.

Seaweb, I used to live in SF.  The thing I always thought was nuts is when you came to the occasional intersection with a "hill" sign.  That meant- "when did you last check your parachute?"
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

I had mixed feelings about their pedestrian answer myself. Lots of students here, they cross when/where they please. It seems there is a moral requirement, your 3,000 lb car vs. student. Much as you might like to kill them  ;), I just use the horn. ;D

95% missed the one about on coming bright lights, I move to the right.
That is standard procedure on any 1 1/2 lane mountain road anyway I guess :)

the one i missed was the headlight one... i marked parking lights cuz i was thinking hazards.  if you are having trouble seeing other cars they are probably having trouble seeing you... i'd say that's an ok one to miss though.
