Hey guys, haven't gotten much done in the past few weeks, I've been having to work anywhere between 10 and 30 hours of overtime the past several weeks. 12+ hour work days and working weekends have been wiping me out from getting any time in the garage. Luckily, I should be going back to normal hours in the next week so I'll have plenty of time and extra money to get back in to the bike.

Managed to get a little bit done today. Cleaned up the motor a little bit and stripped the exhaust off. I even got a chance to go pick up a few parts from someonr on Craigslist and ordered paint from VMR. With the exhaust off now I can get this up on my lift and go to town taking it down to the frame.

Got some more disassembly done today, almost ready to pull the engine. I'm thinking about taking this frame to be powdercoated, anyone have a rough idea on price?

With all the overtime I've been working I used my extra cash to pick up A LOT of parts for the bike so once I get going on this build big things will come

Depends on the location really, if you're anywhere near Georgia, drop it off at Marc's shop.

For a proper job from a quality shop I'd expect to pay $300-$550 depending upon their mood and location.

I paid $80 to have my frame blasted and powdercoated last month.

Typical price is more like $200.

Nothin like fresh powder!

Thanks for the input guys. There are a few different places near me so I can shop around for the best price, but now I have a ballpark figure to compare too.

Quiz them on how they do things (e.g. ask if they pre-heat the oven or the part, what steps do they take to prep etc. etc.). You won't believe some of the blunders I had to put up with recently.

I took a whole questionnaire that Marc/Powderman helped me put together ;D ;D Marc had actually referred me to a shop in my area that he trusted, but it was a significant drive. The local guy was the second best option AFTER he got most of the questions right. Even after that, I didn't risk the prep work for my engine to his guys and did it myself (see my K3 thread), and insisted that Bob (owner) himself take care  of it.

Nice project!

I know everyone here is in love with powdercoat, but.... why not just paint the black stuff with black paint?
Black paint is a very close match to the original Honda finish.... ;D

Hey Jerrry.....semi-gloss black powdercoat is a very close match as well.  I don't have anything against painting a frame, came down to convenience for me. My powder guy can blast, painter can not.

Hey Jerry,
When I stripped my CB500 down to the frame I just spray painted it. It came out looking great but it doesn't have the same durability as powdercoat. There were a few tiny spots on the frame I ended up having to touch up because I knicked it putting something back together and with everything I'm putting into this bike I want it to last.

Damn, it's been nearly a whole month since I've posted and I feel like I've barely accomplished anything despite all my time in the garage. Everything is finally out of the frame. All bushings, bearings, and races have been removed. So far I've gotten 3 powder coating quotes and I'm waiting to hear back from a few other local places. So far the estimates I've been given were $400, $500-$600, and $800, pretty wide range.

Engine is out and I've cleaned it up a bunch since this, I need to paint the case, polish up the covers and replace seals and gaskets.

I started cleaning up a some of the aluminum, once I've got everything polished I'm going to try out some clear that I got from Eastwood called Exo Armor, it's a metal clear that says it won't yellow and is supposedly good up to 2000 degrees. I'll let you know how it works.

I even decided to pull the hubs to polish, I bought some shiny new spokes and rims I'm excited to lace up. I've got about a dozen boxes of new and used parts in my room that are filled with all kinds of fun stuff. Stay tuned to see.

Sheesh that sounds expensive on the powder coating, not that im an expert, I just expected less than those quotes.

Good luck on finding a good shop! Im in the same boat but in LA where i know no one..

I dropped off my frame and everything else at the powder coater today. The price for everything together was $500. That includes the frame, swingarm, top and bottom triple, oil tank, chain guard, center stand, kick stand, battery box, tool box, front and rear peg mounts, handlebar clamps, tach and speedo mounts, ignition mount, horn mount, seat latch mount, engine mounts, caliper and brake rotor... I think that was everything.

I went with Vibrant Finish powder coating. They weren't the lowest price quoted to me but looking at examples of their work and reading reviews hopefully I made the right choice.
Here's a link to some of their stuff https://www.instagram.com/vibrantfinish/

Got some good news from my powdercoater today. Everything's done and ready to get picked up this weekend. Now I just need to get the engine ready to go back in.

Got a couple instagram videos of the frame being powdered and the finished products.
