Don't worry about it Sean, we're preaching to the inverted...... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Same time as I did my 836, a buddy did up his Suzuki 1000, pistons, cams, I think.., it could run away from my 836.. But after he rode the 836, and felt how torquey it was , he said that was way more fun to ride around town..
His didnt really go good till the revs got up quite aways.

One weekend north of Seattle... On a sunday morning..in the middle of the freeway lanes...
That Suzi motor let go....was a chore to coast thru a couple lanes to get to the shoulder....
That bike never ran again....I have a piece of the piston.. Would fit in a tablepoon... And that was from wristpin up..

Of course looks matters,  i was into choppers.. No hiding engine uglies in that scenario.
The 754. Made a nice chopper.. A GT 550 RamAir did not..
A sixties Triumph make a nice streetracker in a Trackmaster frame.. A new TriTwin does not..
And so it goes.. I and a few others are vety Visual Oriented when it comes to bikes and parts...
A Ceriani GP fork looks way better than a 80,s GPZ antidive... I would rather look at Ap caliper on my bike than a GL two piston caliper..
Sorry but to me ..it has to look and work...  Otherwise we all should be on electric bikes if they were affordable..right ?

That is a great question.  I am 43 and was using email before the internet started.  All the teachers and instructors said to put RE: into the subject line, and to this day that is the way I do.  It is just short for regarding.

I just can't bring myself to drop it.  I have tried, but it feels wrong.  Want to get my fur to stand up on end just PM or email me with nothing in the subject line at all!  I will nearly blow a gasket.

I also try to use proper grammar, but it often looks like a drunken chinese monkey got loose on my keyboard.

Cal - very early 90's "the Intranet" actually - sure the  current net existed - mostly still as as darpanet at the time and was coming into being - but before the net took off, intranet was all the rage between branches within the same company.  Popped up the same time as the wildly revolutionary fax machine.

The term was mostly used during the 90s by yuppies who made their own awful-looking web pages.

Curious. How and exactly when was this?

93 or so.  By all accounts I should be millionaire as I have had a PC starting with AOL.  Should have been able to figure something out by now.  Seem like all the money being made now is by writing software of some sort.  Gotta love apps 75% less work that a full software package and you just upload to the apple or android store.

I am learning that anyone who is making any real big money is selling software, training, coaching, or consulting.  No one wants to take the risk with physical products as the cost is so high.  Software and info products are low risk high reward.

This dude John.do made a wordpress plugin called pressgram, did a kickstarter and got $52,000 in 7 days.  I want to do something similar for shopify to take pictures of my parts then it would allow the seller to post to shopify, ebay, amazon, their blog etc....

Snap a collection of pictures, add text upload.  Then from the comfort of your PC add all the annoying details.

The future is in automation of all shapes and sizes.  If it takes a full day to picture and post 400 parts what if you could do it in under 1 hour?

I still have a couple subcontractors that fax their invoices to my office, "my girl" scans and emails to me for payment approval.

One other sub shoots a pic of his invoice and texts it to me, gotta love smartphones!

The FAX goes back to long before intranets or LANs (local area networks). ;)

Email is communication sent across the internet, which predates '93. Perhaps a bit of an exaggeration, Chewy. Pine was in use long before AOL. I'm quite familiar with DarpaNet too. And html really entered the fray in late '92 with Mozilla once commercially available web servers were viable.

Now if you are talking about BBS or some other forums, thats a wee bit different but still doesn't predate the internet/DarpaNet.

Cal I used Pine, it was my first email.  My point is the modern internet or what most refer to as the digital age did not start until late 2002, and the information that was available was a narrow sliver of what we have today.  Now most all of man kinds knowledge is on the internet.

That creates amazing opportunities for some and hardships for others.  The options and choices of entertainment, knowledge, training, and physical products has never been greater.  Software is a great example of a product that can be tailor made to a single micro vertical ie. shave soap for men.

Shave soap for men was too small of nice 10 years ago when there was no easy, good way to reach the masses.

Al Gore would most definitely disagree with you on your dates  ;)

I am sure he would.

The point is that the traditional business model of mass marketing a generic product or service is long gone. That model just does not work anymore as people want a product or service tailor made to their specific situation or problem.  Super specific is the new way to go.

Take yoga there are 1,000s of different yogas and may people have made a living selling yoga DVDs to help people with their specific situation.

Yoga for back pain, yoga for pregnant women, yoga for rock climbers etc...  Rinse wash and repeat.

Take plain old hand soap how many different types there are?  They would not exist if people did not want them.

As for the manufacturing thing the problem is not that we can't compete in that space it is that the Chinese don't respect intellectual property rights.

I have talked to many members here about having a marketplace to sell machined parts for vintage motorcycles and I got valid objections about overseas knockoffs.

There is enough for everyone, and the technology exist for everyone to have a rich and full life.  People know something is wrong they just can't put it into words.

Traditional markets for products and skills are fragmenting into numerous micro verticals, and this will continue to as the internet grows.

The problem is that most people like simple, and traditional jobs are simple.  Most don't want to figure out how to be a specialist in this or that.

There is much more intense competition for a middle class job of $75k than there is to sell $250,000 of goods and services on the internet.

I am starting to think with America's golden age behind us the best way for one to succeed is to make their own path.

The path other's have made for  me is going to leave me destitute.
