What to do before first startup after a rebuild?
« on: May 11, 2016, 02:35:44 PM »
My 466 is almost complete, currently it's only missing the side covers, alternator, clutch and carbs to be done. Although before mounting it back in the frame I would like to do a test run on the engine stand that i have it on, just the bare minimum to have it run for a bit, I was thinking since my rebuild snowballed from a frozen clutch if it's a good idea to have the engine run at first without the clutch in place, then when i'm ready to mount it in the frame put the clutch in and avoid having it stick on me again.

Here's how the thing looks like, sorry for the crappy quality.

I'll give it a paint touch up also before installing it on the frame.

The engine will likely be significantly out of balance without the spinning mass of the clutch in place. If it starts at all, it'll likely bounce your engine stand around pretty good.

In my mind, it would be like running a V8 engine without its harmonic balancer.

Hmmm... Not following your reasoning. How is running it without the clutch going to help the clutch 'sticking' problem? (other than there being no clutch to 'stick'?) I mean, you have to put the clutch in eventually, so why not now? It's meant to run with that weight rotating on the shaft. Why did the clutch 'stick' in the first place? Have you disassembled it, examined all the parts, and replaced whatever was causing it to 'stick'?

First start up with new rings - ideally engine should be warmed up to operating temperature then taken out and given a decent flogging (around a race track is ideal!)- not held at high revs excessively, but definitely given full throttle to bed in the new rings. If you don't do this the bores will get glazed, rings wont seal as well and you wont get as good a result.

I have new fiber disks and heavier springs for the clutch, the old one stuck because the bike was left sitting for a while, so based on what you've said, I'm ditching the idea of running it without the clutch in place.

Now my other problem is that I don't have a track anywhere near my place.

Don't worry about a track. Take it to an area where you can exercise all gears up through the RPM range. Like Jonda said, don't keep it at excessively high RPM. I'd add that you don't want to keep it any any one rpm range too long.  Keep alternating gears and RPM. It doesn't take a whole lot to get the rings seated. Good luck.

You probably could either kick or hit the starter with the fuel off to build up oil pressure until the light goes off. Maybe even remove a couple tappet covers to verify the top end getting oil. Would be awful if an oil gallery was clogged, but a great thing to catch before you actually run it.

Here's a line from an old summer camp song that seems relevant.
