Ole' Blue CB750
« on: February 05, 2017, 06:31:27 PM »
Hello all.

I purchased a 1975 CB750K and plan to build a café.  It will be something that I think would have been a cool racer "back-in-the-day".
It was purchased from a guy that lives 1 hour north of Ottawa.  He had it as a parts bike for his daily rider (a '70 in horrible shape!!).  He had ridden the '70 since he bought it in '72.  He got the bike I purchased about 15 years ago as a non runner.  It's missing a few parts but nothing that I will be using.  The bike is in nice shape as far as rust and corrosion.  The engine turns freely and leaks good, which is surprising given the length of time it's been sitting.

The build will consist of a stock tank, 900 Kawasaki tail faring, clip-ons, rear sets, 4 into 1 header, a reinforced swingarm, a "few" lightening holes, and a stock style paint job with the "stripe" carrying over onto the seat fairing.

I have not done a bike build like this before but have been around other stuff for a while.  In the late 70's in was into NHRA drag racing ('64 Plymouth SS/D). In the 80's I raced motocross (mostly Hondas) and road bicycles. Through those times I built and modified hotrods and muscle cars.  Lately (last 12 years) I've been Land Speed Racing - a car not a bike!

I did not get much done when I first got it but I am working on it pretty steadily as of late.

This seems to be a great site with some really talented and knowledgeable people.
I look forward to tapping that know how.

I'd like to get some advice on paint colour.  Specifically for the frame and swing arm.  It will be powder coated and I know it's black but I want to be sure to do it in the OEM shade.  I've done some research and can't come up with anything certain.  I'll apologize in advance if this has been a repetitive question.
TIA for the help.

Congrats on the purchase.  Looking forward to seeing what you do with this.

Just FYI, you can create a free account at PhotoBucket.com and download their free app for your iPhone, iPad, or Droid devices.  If you take your photos on your phone, go into the app and select which photos you want to upload and it handles all of that for you.  Then, just click on the photo on the web site as you're making your post on here and click the Image tag on the right...paste that in here and it handles all of the HTML markup stuff for you.  It's literally one click on the phone, one click on the web site and paste.

Even after you get image posting rights on here, this site limits you to uploading a single photo at a time.  You can still upload multiples in a single post but it just takes a while.  The photobucket option is free and gets you around that limitation pretty easily.  (There are other sites that do it as well but I find the photobucket to be the simplest and easiest way that I've seen.)

Ok.  I thought there would be a paint code.  Am I just being to fussy?

Resto Fan - I've used the photobucket method on other forums but I thought it would be easier to use the "attachments" link at the bottom of the reply window.

Tank looks like 74 or earlier. Check on top of carb linkage for the knurled idle adjustment screw.
If it is same side of the petcock, then tank has been switched.

Those pipes look to be in decent condition.  If you don't want them, I'll take them off your hands!  ;D

754 - The idle adjuster is on the left side - petcock on the right (is this incorrect for a '75?)

CB750 CFR - the pipes look great in the photos but in reality the lefts or good but the right sides are rotted.  I can take pics for you if you like.

The bike looks like a great start for a custom or restore.  It will be pretty easy to find the parts you are missing.  Welcome aboard.

What does the frame tag say ? Could be a 74 registered in 75 .
74 has small signal lights, 75 has the big ones, left petcock, and I think headlight cannot be turned off.

I only removed parts that I won't be using and started to mock up my vision.  I slid the fork tubes up 2" to replicate the shorter tubes I want.  The rear height is stock (or as I received the bike).

Frame tag says  "1/74"
Does that constitute a '74 registered in '75?  That makes sense.  I just wasn't sure how it was handled back then.

Thanks for the welcome PP.  I'm not concerned about the missing parts.  I wouldn't be using anything that was missing anyways.  I lucked out in that regard.

I sourced a Kawi tail faring and started cutting it up and checking the fit.
I also purchased clip-ons and rear sets and started to figure them out.  I used a piece of aluminum fastened to the frame to fine tune the rear set location.

I had a couple of mounting "posts" machined up to fit the rear sets. After removing the sections of the passenger peg brkts that were not needed I fit the posts to the tubes c/w gussets.
