Helmet Headset?
« on: February 11, 2017, 04:09:17 PM »
I miss tunes while riding and the cycle sound doesn't cut it, so I've decided to go with a helmet headset and use my phone.  I've done a little research but have simply no idea what to go with.  What are you guys using in your full face?

I have a Sena SMH-10 and I like it. I think there are one or two newer models since the SMH-10.

Our group uses the Sena 10s. Makes riding with a large group easier. You can preprogram seven fm channels, along with your Bluetooth tunes.

Subscribed.

I would be interested in just plain intercom headsets too.  Extended range 4+ people, maybe.

Thanks for the info, but is there a headset that can plug into my phone directly?  I would like to get a 10s in the future, but I don't have $200.00+ in the budget right now, to many other things that need to be done first.

Just stick one ear bud in. Cheap, works, and doesn't drain your battery like running Bluetooth will.

I got this -cheap, good enough inside helmet, gets FM radio as well, good battery life, links to any bluetooth phone - can change tunes with dial:

Could you guys explain the expected use/operation?

Last time I had tunes in helmet I was using a pair of headphones plugged into a walkman  ;)

So using Sena or something like that you have no wire between helmet and the phone?  Or do you need to power your helmet?

and how do you use it?  manage it all by the phone?  How do you take an incoming call?  Make an outgoing call?

What is the best reason to have it?  I always ride solo, no need to communicate with anybody around me.

When I'm riding solo, I use the headset to listen to music or radio from my phone via Bluetooth. When my wife and I are riding two-up, we communicate back and forth through the headsets rather than yell into the wind.
When my son is out with us, we can all three be on the same frequency and communicate together. This is handy to let each other know when we need gas, directions, etc.

Ours are rechargable, plug them in when you are not riding, charge them up. Ours last about 2-3 hours, depending on how much use they get (they power down when no one speaks for a period of time, power up when someone speaks).

You can make and receive calls, although I can never hear the caller when I'm riding, but it does beep if someone leaves a message.

We've been happy with ours, obviously with any electronic device, they are subject to malfunction.

The Sena is a bluetooth unit with a battery that needs to be recharged and there's a unit on the side of your helmet that controls it with buttons and dials.  If your phone is voice command able, you can use them with it.

I ride solo 98% of the time and dont like earbuds in while riding and will probably modify a wired gaming headset to fit in my helmet.  I had a wired system in my helmet when I had my Kawa Voyager touring bike and I liked it alot.

Thank you, guys!

Back in the day I loved to have music while riding, now I find it annoying in the car, never missed it on a bike.

But I like to know options and possibilities even when turning into grumpy old fart.

I've got a Shark Audio blue tooth headset that was inexpensive and it did work but just barely so our son got us a Sena smh10 dual for Christmas. We've only tried it out once but so far we love it and a huge improvement over the Shark set up, just getting used to all it's control functions now. When riding solo I don't use it at all but but when my wife is with me we use it to talk to each other and so she can listen to her music that's on her phone. Don't know first hand how long the battery life is in the blue tooth head set but according to Sena a full charge will last for 12 hrs of talk time.

If $$ is an issue, get the SMH10. It's older so cheaper and works really well. I love mine and the new features don't justify the extra dollars for me. Maybe when it's time to replace my lid, the new Sena helmet will be available.

I used semi-custom ear buds from earfuze for a couple years. I really liked them. Very comfortable and I had no issues with too much outside sound being blocked.

I actually picked it up - the Sena 10C.

Desert-SOHC mentioned it, so I looked up some youtube clips and reviews and decided to give it a go.

It's charging right now - or I think it is.  Once it's up and running I'll take it out on a spin and see how it does  - probably Saturday when I get some free time.

I use the Sena 20s and it is one of the better units I have tried. I was a little worried about a bug tumor glued to the outside of my helmet but I don't even notice it now. The music sounds great, good base, and very clear. It hooks right up to my phone as soon as I get my lid on and push the on button. I even talk on the phone and it's so clear and the microphone is so good I take client calls on my way to work and they don't even know I am riding!
Bought wife and son same units and intercom between bike is fantastic!
