Powdercoat front brake caliper - good idea?
« on: January 27, 2017, 04:46:39 AM »
I took it apart as it was sticky. Cleaned out lots of gunk and now that I have it apart, I figure I'll paint it. But, we all know that paint and brake fluid is a horrible mix... how about powdercoating? Does it play nice with brake fluid? Will the caliper be OK with the 180 degree celcius curing?

The temperature is not an issue, but while pc is more durable than paint, it is not completely resistant to brake fluid.

I've used caliper paint (available at auto parts store) on several calipers and have not had an issue.
I use a hose and bleeder bag when bleeding so fluid does not leak on the caliper, other parts of the bike or my garage floor.

I powdercoated mine, it is very resistant to brake fluid.

Agreed. Both my calipers are powder coated in satin black. Look great.

It works fine. The OEM coating - dunno what it is - holds up to brake fluid. I have had them powdercoated with no ruination from occasional dribbles.
Mask the bore, the face where it mounts to the bracket,  and the holes for the line and bleeder. The coating may crack under the bolts, I did not mask a washer circle.

Use caliper paint. Immune to brake fluid.

I wonder if a satin finish might be more durable than gloss, or at least not show up spills so easily. I had some calipers powdered a few years ago - gloss black - and first time bleeding them got a run of fluid down the outside which left an unsightly stripe that I was only able to cover up by painting the caliper.

Lesson I learned there was never to take any chances with brake fluid, now when I come to bleed brakes I try to protect finished surfaces as much as I can by masking and winding rags around the caliper.

Another factor may be in the PC process - the sage advice of employing a reputable tradesman who knows motorcycles (rather than someone who coats railings and garden gates) might apply here.... :)

I remember reading once that the old school English bikes some used black stove paint on their engines for heat durability.

Sure, I've done that and used regular spray too. The coat is a more durable finish.
