64 cb77 resto-mod

I started this project a few weeks ago. It was originally supposed to be a flip, but some engine issues turned it into a keeper. I have always liked/wanted a superhawk, so that was an easy choice.

Here's what I started with


The plan is to keep it mostly stock but with a little bit of a racer look.  The frame, swingarm, center stand, and lower forks are currently being powdercoated satin black. The rest of the bodywork will be black as well including the front and rear fenders. I picked up a CR93 replica front fender.  The engine will be black with some bare aluminum accents on the tappet covers, stator cover, points cover, and oil slinger. All of the chrome is at the plater now to get redone except for the rims. Ill be getting aluminum rims laced to the hubs. I haven't decided yet on a natural finish on the rims or black. The bike will have a lot of black already. I picked up a CL77 exhaust for it that I would like to coat black and keep the shields chrome. The seat will be identical to the one on my bomber.

At the moment, I'm in waiting mode. All of the chrome is gone to the platers for 6-8 weeks. Frame etc. is at powder coat for 4 weeks, the top end of the engine is at the machine shop for an unknown amount of time, I'm waiting on my front fender to come in from Thailand, at which time, I'll need to get it fitted then send everything out for paint. All of the aluminum parts are getting sent out tomorrow for vapor blasting.

In the meantime, I'm just getting in tons of new parts. Pretty much everything on the bike will be new. I'm trying to get everything here now, so when all the outside work is done, I can just assemble it real quick and start riding.

I'm also thinking about maybe a metallic charcoal grey or army green for the body work instead of black.

Nice project Dave, subscribed.    I vote for aluminum colored rims.  I just dropped off some H2 fork ears for new chrome, plater said 3 weeks, what is it with those guys?!

I think bare aluminum is what I'd prefer, but the powder coat guy said 30 for black powder, so I'm going with that. I'm running out of budget for this one

Not much to do on this while I'm waiting on parts to come back, so I went ahead and got my handlebars set up. I had these clubmans on an RD400 I used to have, then I used them again on an RD60. I've always thought they were comfortable, so I'm using them again on this one. This time, I decided to try running the wiring inside. I had to drill my own holes first. Then I ran the inner cable from an old throttle cable through, taped the wires to it and pulled them through. It worked out pretty well. The ID on the bars was too small for my bar end mirrors, so I had to drill them out some on each end. All I need now, is my new clutch and brake perches. I wanted ones that didn't have the mirror mounts since I'm using the bar end mirrors.

My powder coating is supposed to be done at the end of the week, so I can start some assembly at that time. I've decided for paint, I'm going to do the fork covers, headlight, side covers, and tail light bracket in satin black to match the rims, frame, lower forks. The fenders and tank will be British racing green. That's my plan at least until I change my mind again. Haha

Got my parts back from vapor blasting. I'm going to give polishing a try on a few things. Hopefully it goes well


My powder coating is done as well, but I haven't had a chance to pick that stuff up yet. I should be able to collect it all by the end of the week and can maybe start assembly next week. Lacing the wheels will be first. I've never done and I'm not looking forward to it. I watched some videos on lacing and truing. I will not be attempting to true them myself. No way do I have the patience for that.

Were they sent to Tucson?   I just shipped some H2 carbs there this morning.

Yep, Nils did a great job! I can't wait to start getting this thing together. Still have to wait 5-7 more weeks for chrome, though

Chrome shop here is a little different, it's a "Mom & Pop" shop, walk in the sloppy office that smells like cats [and usually has 2or 3 laying around], they both are sitting at desks, hand the guy [Dave] the parts, he gives you a price in 30 seconds and says they will be done in 2-3 weeks.

I picked up my powder coated parts this morning. I'm very happy with how they came out and equally as happy with the price I got as it was below the quote I was given.

That has actually happened to me too, was quoted a [fair] price and then he charged me less!

I had most of the day off today, so after heading up to Cleveland this morning to pick up a cb160, I was able to spend a couple hours this afternoon working on this project.  I got the tree media blasted and painted then installed the new bearings and zinc plated it's hardware so it's ready to reinstall. I also installed my wheel bearings so I can start lacing them this evening.

Since I have such a long wait for chrome, I will be cleaning up and zinc plating all the hardware as I go.

BTW - picked up my H2 fork ears from the plater today, I was shocker when he called this morning.  "Only" took 16 days and $40 bucks an ear, thought the price was very fair.

At the time that I dropped everything off, I didn't think it would be worth spending the money because it's barely visible. In hindsight I think I should have, but this will be fine. I may end up having the fork covers, and side covers powder coated instead of painted, so I'll have the tree done then, if I go that route

Wheels are laced up. That was much easier than I thought. Now I just need to find a shop to true them.

Got a little work done today. It's very slow because I'm cleaning, plating, and polishing parts, nuts, and bolts as I go. I got the triple tree all put together. Forks on temporarily, the covers still need painted. And the center stand on. I put the tank on and set the wheels with it to see sort of how it will look.
