Ha ha, thanks Larry, I do seem to consume a lot of liquor but it helps me sleep, which is kind of a problem when I'm driving? Oh well.....

Sean, I purposely mentioned it was a 39T sprocket to see how many young fish I could catch, well done mate, just hold still while I pull the hook out. If you'd been paying attention, you'd have seen that I'm using a 16 inch rear wheel, which effectively gears the bike down, I'm gonna guesstimate, by close to 20%.

I learned from my previous bike with a 16" rear wheel, my K1 bitsa, that with the standard 18/48 gearing, the bike was pulling 5K RPM @ 60 MPH. That's around 1K RPM higher than with an 18 inch rear wheel, so I installed a 42 tooth rear sprocket with the 18 tooth front, and I was back to 4K RPM @ 60 MPH.

With this bike I'll be running a 17/39 combo, which will give me pretty much the same as the 18/42 that I ran on the K1, but if I go back to an 18" rear wheel, I can leave the 17T front sprocket on for slightly quicker acceleration. Isn't gearing fun? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Ha ha, well it's all "Seat of the pants" sciencing Rafi, from this Ol' rednecks personal experience.

I had the same discussion with Bill last year when I told him that my 1200 Sportster only pulls 3K RPM @ 60 MPH, (from close to 4K RPM with standard gearing) after I increased the rear wheel from 16" (standard) to 18". No problem getting off the line on the Sporty, it's a torquey ol' beast. ;D

OK. Maybe this should be amended to from a Redneck to a New South Build:

Lose the NASCAR or Camo hat.
Go with Starbucks rather than Waffle House
Switch to Kale from Collards
Switch to Taylor Swift from Willie and Waylon

Thanks Bobby, and your grasp of Aussie lingo is excellent of course, but the term is "Taking THE piss" when you're teasing someone. "Taking A piss" is just that, wandering around behind your redneck barn, looking both ways to make sure you're not being observed by some "Easy to offend" liberals, then attempting to write your name before you run out of "ink". Or at least that's what I do....... ;D

I missed it last winter. It can happen some times where I live 59 degrees north, 100km west of Stockholm. A friend lives on the countryside where it is really dark and nice view of all stars.
I prefer warm sunny winter. I have got enough of the dark winters. It was OK in the beginning of my 30's, now + 25 years later oh no! It takes several months to recover and wake up again.

Ha ha, you can keep your snow and ice guys, (you'll have to make up some redneck names for yourselves!) I hate cold weather, the only problem I have here is that it's cold for 3 or 4 months (not cold like Sweden or Denmark, I've been to Europe in the 70's, and I thought it was cold there in summer!) then warm for 3 or 4 months, then fcuking hot for 3 or 4 months!

I dropped off a shiny front hub, spokes and that Borrani rim to Jeff at Ace Motorcycles so he can lace it, and put a new Michelin tyre on, and I'll get that back next week. Jeff had a new chain waiting for me, so I think I'm fast running out of parts that I need, which is good, because I'm running out of money even faster.

Oh well, it's all for the greater good, a pile of unrelated parts is slowly morphing into a motorcycle, and as you guys are heading for cooler weather, it's going to get warm here before long, so I want to get it done so I can enjoy using it as my daily rider once the clouds part and the sun comes out again! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Canada has some dark skies to enjoy the stars and the northern lights when radiation storms pass to give them the cool lights.  There are images on the net showing the night time earth view from space and you can see the light pollution that prevents us from seeing many nighttime wonders.  Traveling at night in the US you can tell when you approach cities as the glow in the sky gives them away...

Well while on the subject, I'm reminded of an Army exercise I was on up in the "Top End" of Oz, in a place called Katherine, in the Northern Territory in 1989.

The weather was dry and warm and I didn't bother erecting my "Hoochie", I had a stretcher though, which proved invaluable when a Taipan took a shortcut thru my sleeping spot one night and slithered underneath, but at least didn't slither over the top of me, which was good.

The benefit of sleeping "under the stars" that far from civilisation was that the view of the stars on those clear nights was amazing. Shooting stars everywhere, satellites, UFO's you name it, it was the most enjoyable aspect of the exercise. Better than TV..... ;D

its amazing how much different the night sky looks from our new house, we're on the not city side of the hills outside Melbourne (facing the yarra valley), so much darker, no light pollution and way way more stuff in the skies
its also great hearing some seriously fast bikes and cars 'doing' the windy Tourist Rd in the middle of the night, theres only one cop up there and he's usually in the front bar of the pub by 7ish
i blame Terry

Last 2 nights in the dark skies of Dolores, CO I thought I was loooking at some light clouds with multitudes of bright stars. And it wasn't the moonshine either. Turns out it was clouds of light called the Milky Way. Pretty awesome.

Well it's late Saturday night and I've no bike building progress to report. You see, being the good son that I am, I drive 200 miles to visit my Ma every second weekend. Ma turns 89 on Monday and she's still doing pretty well, she's not a redneck like me, but she's very active in our little home town, still lives at home and drives the Subaru I gave her, and has just finished another University course. (she's got a PHD in Psychology, whatever that means)

Speaking of cars, my Dad wouldn't ever have been seen dead driving a Japanese car, when I rode my shiny new CB750 home in 1978 he took one look and said "The only good thing to come out of Japan was a Mushroom Cloud", but he was a still a bit angry with the Japs, they'd killed a lot of his mates in WW2.

Dad almost bought a Toyota once. His mate Bill Websdale had the Toyota dealership, and talked Dad into test driving a new Toyota Crown in 1977. Dad loved it, and as his old 1963 Chrysler Valiant was getting a little long in the tooth, he'd been looking for a newer car, so he told bill he'd buy it. That night he couldn't sleep, and he rang Bill first thing in the morning and told Bill he just couldn't buy a Jap car. Bill said, "No worries Jim, we just traded a 1975 Triumph, it's made in England, what about that?" Dad bought it sight unseen.

Now normally I'd say what a pile-o-sh1te English cars are, and to be fair, they are rubbish, but this car is amazing. Dad drove it right up until he was too old (dangerous) to drive any more, and Ma kept right on driving it until I gave her my old Subaru in late 2015, and that old pile just kept chugging along, honestly, it always started, and never broke down! I used to take great pleasure in taking the piss out of Dad about his Pommy Sh1tbox car, but in the 40 years we've owned it, I've probably gone thru 10 cars?

Anyhoo, Ma and  have been trying to give the Triumph away to a good home, but as it's nota "Stag" (Triumph's most popular car) nobody seemed much interested, until I was chatting to an engineer friend a couple of weeks ago, and mentioned that I had this car and was looking for someone to give it to, and he said "I'll take it!" Excellent. Now it hasn't been started since around November 2015, but fired up right away when I installed a fresh battery this morning, and Rob, the new owner was happy to see me driving it out of Ma's driveway as he pulled up with his trailer, so he pulled out his ramps, I drove it onto his trailer, and he was off. Operation Triumph-ant Farewell was a success!

As it is Ma's birthday on Monday, I drove her down to the Metung Pub and bought her lunch, and enjoyed the view. Pity it's still bloody winter, but all in all, not a bad day. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Looks like you are having a harsh winter this year.  Next thing we'll hear is you're having to shovel a path to the barn. ;)

Great story about your Ma and your Dad's Triumph. My pop had the same feelings, as he had a part in creating that mushroom cloud, he was not a fan of Japanese anything. My Ma will turn 100 next week. She has all her marbles and takes barely any medications. She is in assisted living which is very nice. She reads all day in the day room while everyone else is asleep. I supply her with chocolate bars and Canadian whiskey she uses to sleep. The Nurse pours her a shot under Doctor's orders. Being Italian she suspects everything. When I made my last chocolate bar drop, she quietly told me she was getting a short pour every night and suspected she had a "silent partner' in the place. I went to the people pouring and asked that they pour a bit more twice. They said she will "run out sooner" I told them not to worry, I keep a case in the basement and can have a bottle there in 10 minutes.
