Electric box under seat
« on: June 11, 2017, 01:26:15 PM »
Do I risk something leaving the electric components as in the picture? I think about the magnetic switch that has a tendency to overheat. I put the rectifier outside the box and I'm running a lithium ion battery.

My first thought was short circuit that will blow the main fuse and stop bike direct if lucky. No fuse, maybe melted wires, and more if fuel leaks.
It must be mounted and clamped in a way that it can not be shorted.

sorry maybe it's a dumb question, but what can cause the short circuit ?

so what is the best way to hide wires under seat ? I've invested in the lithium battery especially to be able to hide electronics under the seat

Need to have your vreg and recifiter secured and rubber insulated too.

Secure everything that has a bolt hole or mount and give that battery plenty of room. The battery also needs some kind of vent to help keep it cool.

Thanks guys, I'll leave the electronics for another time as my lifepo4 lithium battery died completely...just used 4 times. I'm afraid that my bike voltage exceeded the 14.4 volts. Just hooked up an acid battery and everything is fine, but as soon as I plug the lithium one, everything is dead!!

It would be worth purchasing an www.oregonmotorcycleparts.com
V-reg if you're needing to be real precise about your charging with the LiPo battery.

speaking of keeping the battery cool.  is it absolutely necessary to have a battery breather hose?  i do not have one.

is it best to go for a vreg or buy a combo rectifier-regulator to change the old stock separate units ? thx

The breather hose doesn't keep the battery cool, it allows the flammable gases that develop when charging to escape, and when properly routed, stops battery acid corroding everything below the battery, dumping any acid that may drip out on the road instead. So not absolutely necessary, but insane not to have one!

I like discreet electronics.  The omp vreg plugs into the factory harness with no guesswork.  Biggest perk, widely adjustable with a small screwdriver.

He also sells a rectifier.  I have them both.  He warns not to let the rectifier ground its body to anything.  So I put a loop of old rubber around mine for safety.

If there's nowhere to attach a hose then it's safe to say it don't need one!

As far as keeping the battery cool, its more important on lithium ion batteries, they are temperature sensitive

That's an accident waiting to happen.  Vibration and jolts will ruin your wiring and components.  Especially the Li battery pack which will get smacked around on every bump you hit.  Components need to be mounted and vibration isolated if they were originally meant to be mounted that way.  Wire bundles need to be anchored to the frame so they don't flex and that Li battery, I would not have one under me on a bike.

Aircraft and motorcycles have 1 thing in common....vibration.  You will never find a lose wire bundle/components on either from the factory.  There is a reason for that.
